Chapter 8: Meg's Departure and Return
Meg stayed with Erik and Christine for two months and Christine was very sad when her friend left.
"Meg, do you have to leave?" Christine asked, tears stinging her eyes.
"Don't cry so, Christine. I'll be back before you know it," Meg comforted. "I'll see you in a month's time. I shall return before you give birth," she continued. Meg turned to face Erik as she said, "Take care of her for me."
"I'll protect her with my life, just as I always have," Erik replied with a nod.
The couple rode with Meg in the carriage ride to the dock, where they gave her an embrace goodbye and told her how much they looked forward to her next visit.
Christine hoped that Meg would indeed make it back to London before she gave birth.
Meg departed from the couple and boarded the ship. With that, Erik and Christine returned home.
"Can you believe that our first wedding anniversary is in just two months?" Erik asked.
"No, I can't. It seems like it was just yesterday that we ran away together," Christine said. "That was the most wonderful night of my life."
"I don't know what was more magical, our wedding or the night we ran away together."
"I would say that both were equally as magical."
One month later, Meg returned as promised. Christine was relieved that her friend made it back before she gave birth. She wanted Meg to be their for the birth of her and Erik's child.
Christine was just over nine months pregnant when Meg arrived. The doctor advised Christine to stay home when possible until the baby came, so Erik went alone to pick up Meg from the docks.
"Hello, Meg. It is lovely to see you again," Erik greeted.
"Erik, it is lovely to see you too," Meg replied. "Are you and Christine still planning on doing this as we originally planned?"
"Yes. If all goes well, we will be returning to Paris with you."
You see, when the baby turned one month old, Erik and Christine planned to return to Paris with Meg for a visit. They wanted to take their child to Gustave Daaé's grave and to meet Madame Giry. That wouldn't be for a while, though. All of this was dependent on when Christine gave birth.
On the ride home, Erik and Meg had a lively discussion about what had gone on in their lives since they had last seen each other.
"Christine will be so delighted to see you, Meg," Erik said. "She has been miserable lately, not herself at all."
"Poor Christine!" Meg exclaimed. "I admire her for soldiering through this as she has these past nine months."
"Yes. I can't imagine enduring anything quite like what she's going through."
The pair arrived at the house and Christine greeted them at the door.
"Christine!" Meg exclaimed. "It's so good to see you!"
"It's good to see you too, Meg!" Christine replied.
Erik gave his wife a tender kiss. "Are you feeling better, Angel?"
"Yes, much," Christine replied. "Now, will you take off that mask? You're not in public."
"Yes, dear," Erik replied. He still wasn't completely comfortable taking his mask off in front of Meg, but he thought it best not to argue with Christine.
Meg wasn't at all phased when Erik took off his mask. He was very surprised. He was used to people screaming and running away in fear. Erik was beginning to have a new appreciation for Meg.
The husband put his mask away and made dinner. The three had a joyous time together.
Meg was exhausted from travel and went to bed early, giving Erik and Christine time to talk.
"I'm so glad that Meg is here again," Christine said.
"I'm glad too. You seem happier now that she's here," Erik commented.
"I am. I wish that she didn't live so far away."
"I know," Erik replied. He thought for a moment. "What if Meg came and spent one week a month with us?"
"Oh Erik! That would be wonderful!"
"We'll discuss it with her first thing tomorrow morning."
"Or we could discuss it with her after you run and get the doctor," Christine suggested.
"After I run and get the doctor? I don't understand. Why do we need the doctor?" Erik said, confused.
"Because my water just broke. Erik, I'm going into labor."
