Chapter 10: No One Would Listen
Getting up multiple times during the night was taking its toll on the couple. This night, though, was especially unpleasant. Christine put Gustave to sleep at eight o'clock. Gustave would wake up and start crying every hour.
Meg, too, had to help put the child to sleep. She wanted to be of assistance to the family. Erik and Christine both objected to Meg helping, but she did anyway, as she had grown rather attached to Gustave.
By the next morning, Gustave was sleeping soundly. The trio took this time to catch up on their sleep, as they were all exhausted. The first one to awaken was Christine. As soon as she got up, she checked on her son and made sure he was still sleeping soundly. He was. Christine, then, went downstairs and made breakfast.
Soon, Erik awoke and joined his wife, and Meg joined the couple not long after.
"Darling, you didn't have to make breakfast," Erik kissed Christine. "Thank you."
"Yes, Christine, it was delicious," Meg complimented.
Meg and Christine wanted to go out shopping, but Gustave was only a couple weeks old and they didn't want to take him out of the house just yet. So, Erik offered to take care of their son while his wife and her friend shopped. The baby slept the entire afternoon, giving Erik time to finish the song he was writing about Christine.
"My masterpiece!" He declared as he finished. He moved to the piano and began to play. The melody brought tears to his eyes as he recalled the past: the pain he'd been through, the mistakes he made, the hurt he caused others. It all came flooding back to him, crashing down on him like waves in a violent storm. Through it all, Christine was the one who stuck with him. He appreciated her very much. Erik quickly dried his tears. Christine and Meg could return at any moment and he didn't want them to see him like this.
The two girls returned home, laughing hysterically.
"I take it you had a good time?" Erik inquired.
"Oh, yes," Christine replied. She turned to her friend and exclaimed, "Meg, how I have missed spending time with you!"
"I've missed you too!" Meg replied.
"What did you buy?" Erik looked at the package under Christine's arm.
"Just a couple outfits for Gustave," Christine showed her husband.
Just then Gustave began to cry. Christine got up to attend to her child, but Erik stopped her. "No, let me," he said.
Erik went up the stairs and into the room his son was in. Gustave was crying bloody murder. Erik went over to the boy, but it only seemed to upset him more. That had never happened before. The father was suddenly very concerned. He thought for a moment. He reached up to rub the side of his face and found his mask there. "That must be it," he thought. Erik took off his mask and Gustave stopped crying immediately. That made Erik smile. Gustave smiled back. The father picked up his son gently. He tried to think of a way to get his son to fall asleep. Erik suddenly had an idea. He began to sing:
"No one would listen
No one but her
Heard as the outcast hears
Shamed into solitude
Shunned by the multitude
I learned to listen
In my dark, my heart heard music
I long to teach the world
Rise up and reach the world
No one would listen
I alone could hear the music
Then, at last, a voice in the gloom
Seemed to cry 'I hear you'
'I hear your fears
Your torment and your tears'
She saw my loneliness
Shared in my emptiness
No one would listen
No one but her
Heard as the outcast hears
No one would listen
No one but her
Heard as the outcast hears."
What Erik didn't know was that Christine had been standing in the doorway the entire time. "Angel, that song is beautiful. You wrote it, didn't you?" She asked when her husband finished.
"Yes, I did. I wrote it about you," he replied.
"I love it," she told Erik, "and I love you."
Erik lay Gustave back in his cradle and led his wife downstairs.
