Moving
Jessica quickly ran to the restroom to clean herself up, she then called her mother.
"Is it a lot of blood, Jessica?"
"Yes, mom! I don't know what to do! I can't lose another child!"
"I'm on my way, baby."
"No, it's late. I.. I'll just go alone."
"You will not! Your father and I are coming. He can stay at the house and I'll go with you."
"Thank you.."
"Of course! Just relax, we're on out way."
"Okay.."
After hanging up, Jessica went up to check on the kids.
When she walked into Evangeline and Julia's bedroom, she found Evangeline sitting in her crib with her pacifier in her mouth.
"What are you doing up?" Jessica whispers.
"Dada?" She mumbles.
"No it's mama."
"Dada."
"No." Jessica sighs and takes her out of the crib.
She then quietly walks into her bedroom to find some clothes.
"Dada?" Evangeline looks at Sam.
"Shh.. he's sleeping."
"Dada!" She shouts.
"Be quiet, Evie. You're gonna wake him up!"
"You okay?" Sam mumbles.
Jessica quickly turns when she hears Sam's voice.
"Yeah.. I'm fine."
"Where are you going?"
"The hospital.."
"The hospital? Why, what happened?"
"I.. I think I'm losing the baby." Jessica says in a tearful voice.
"No! Let me come with you."
"No. No, my mother is coming with me.."
"Oh.. but I want to be there for you."
"It's fine, Sam. Just go back to sleep."
"I can't sleep, I'm worried!"
Jessica sighs. "Don't worry. Just go to sleep. My dad is going to stay here while my mom takes me to the emergency room."
"I'm okay to stay by myself for a few hours."
"Sam, you are in a wheelchair. I'm not leaving you alone with the kids."
"Alright. Well I'm sorry I can't go with you."
"It's okay.." Jessica then walks into the bathroom to change, taking the baby with her.
**
After a few minutes, Jessica's parents arrive.
"They're here, Sam. I'm gonna take the baby with me."
"You sure?"
"Yeah cause she's wide awake now, and I don't want my dad having to stay up with her."
"Okay.."
"Do you need anything before I go?"
"No, thanks.. Be careful."
"I will.... bye."
"Bye."
**
Jessica sat in the emergency room for a while before she was called back.
She was taken for blood work, then down the hall to a room.
Dorothy held the still very wide awake baby while Jessica changed into a gown.
"You're so wide awake, Evangeline. Aren't you sleepy?"
"Dada?"
"No I'm grandma."
"Dada?"
"Noooo. This is grandma!"
"Dada!" She pouts.
"You'll see dada soon, buttercup. Don't pout those cute little lips!" Dorothy kisses her cheek.
Just then Jessica walks out with red watery eyes.
"Are you still bleeding?"
"Yeah.."
"I'm sure everything is okay."
"Nothing is ever okay."
"Jessie.."
"It's not. I can never be happy.. something like this always has to happen." Jessica says as she looks down, caressing her small bump.
Just then there was a knock on the door.
Jessica answered a few questions, and then was hooked up to a fetal monitor.
"Alright, just give me one second.. Okay there." The nurse spoke softly seconds before a strong heartbeat filled the room.
"Oh my goodness, there it is!" Jessica laid her head back and cried.
"That's my little baby.."
"There it is! Now just hang tight and listen to that precious sound for a few minutes. Dr. Lebon will be right in to discuss your blood work."
"Thank you."
The woman leaves, and Jessica cries even more.
"Oh sweetie, don't cry. The baby is okay!" Dorothy smiles.
"Then why am I bleeding?"
"Honey, it's probably stress. There is so much on your plate right now with Sam, and the kids."
"I guess you're right.."
"Everyone is just going to have to help out a little more so you're not so stressed."
"No, it's fine."
"Baby, we're family! This is what families do!"
"You don't have to do that.. it doesn't matter anymore.."
"What do you mean?"
"It doesn't matter because.. because Sam and I aren't together anymore."
"What?!" Dorothy shouts.
"He broke up with me before we went to bed. He's moving in with his parents. He's their problem now. Not mine."
"Where did that come from?"
Jessica sighs.
"Well not to get too personal but.. Sam and I haven't been intimate since the accident.. so tonight I.. I tried to touch him, and he pushed me away. He said I'm like a stranger to him and that it's awkward. Mom, he's known me his whole life! How can he not remember a single thing we've been though?" Jessica slightly raises her voice.
"Shh, calm down. You don't want to upset the baby."
Jessica looks down and slowly nods her head.
"I'm not meant to have a fairytale ending. I'm not meant to grow old with someone.
I'm meant to be a mother.. a single mother. And that's okay. Sam needs to focus on getting better, and I need to focus on my kids. It just sucks cause we were so happy. Fucking Danny!"
"Sweetie, the man had a traumatic head injury! That's not something you can just bounce back from."
"I know.. and I want to help him, I really do. But I can't just push myself on him."
"When is his next surgery?"
"Two weeks. That's another worry for me. This poor baby probably hates me and all of my emotions!" Jessica looks down and rubs her belly.
"I'm sorry little buddy.."
**
The doctor kept Jessica there for a few hours. In those few hours, Evangeline ate and fell asleep in her mother's arms.
She didn't even wake up when Dorothy put her in the car.
"Is she okay?" Jessica asks as Dorothy gets in the drivers seat.
"Yeah, she didn't even budge. Are you okay?"
"Yeah." Jessica sighs.
"Good! Let's get you home and get some food in that tummy!" Dorothy pats her small bump.
Jessica smiles softly and looks down.
**
Albert and Sam's POV.
"Alright, they're on their way. Just in time for breakfast!"
"Oh good!
Thanks uh.. thanks for helping out, Mr. Lange."
"No problem! Oh and, call me Al, remember?" Albert smiles.
"Yes! Al. I forgot." Sam chuckles.
Sam then clears his throat and says, "Al?"
"That's it, you've got it!"
"Heh! Al, may I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Jessica and I.. were we.. were we close? Like, were we-"
"You two were inseparable."
"Yeah, that's what she says.."
"Danny was horrible to her. When she was carrying their three babies, he never spoiled her. When she carried your children, Jessica felt like a queen. To me one of the worst things he's ever done is make her give birth alone."
"Give birth alone? What do you mean?"
"Well your wife had just passed away, and Jessie was here with you."
"She was here?"
"She didn't like her best friend being alone and depressed. So she came over from Wisconsin with the two girls, while being about nine months pregnant."
"She did?"
"Mhm. And on her drive back home to Danny, was was having labor pains."
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah, and by the time she got home, she was ready to head to the hospital."
"No way."
"It get's worse.
Danny found out where she really was. With you. You see, Jessie told him she was with us because.. well.. Danny hates you.. obviously! And if he knew Jessie was with you, even though you two were only friends at the time, he would have lost it! Which he did. At the worst possible time. Jessie had to Uber to the hospital. It was just her and the girls there when she gave birth to Theo. Autumn called you, but you arrived right after she delivered."
"Wow. Poor, Jessica..
Is that when we got together?"
"No. She left him for a while. She stayed with you and Landon."
"When did we get pregnant with Evie?"
"Not yet! She went back to Danny one more time before that. But if you want to know that story, I'd ask Jessie. I uh.. I don't know much about that story." Albert chuckles.
"Hah! Right!" Sam smiles softly.
"Talking to her and looking at old photos is what you need. I just can't wait till you remember. You two have been through a lot! And the love you have for her is a love I wish for all of my children to have."
Sam smiles softly.
"Hopefully I remember one day.."
"You will, don't worry."
**
"We're home!" Dorothy says walking into the house holding Evangeline who just woke up.
"Hey." Sam looks at Jessica.
"Hey.."
"You feel okay?"
"Yeah.. I got a picture of the baby. Do you want to see it?"
"Of course." Sam smiles.
"Honey, let's leave these two alone." Dorothy places her hand on Albert's arm and guides him to the kitchen.
"Wow.. it looks like a real baby!" Sam says looking down to the ultrasound.
"Heh, yeah.. I'm fifteen weeks and one day today."
"Awesome."
"They told me they knew the gender."
"Really? What is it?"
"I didn't want to find out yet."
"Oh. This is so cool.." Sam says still smiling down to the photo.
"Yeah.."
"I'm glad the baby's okay, Jess." He looks up to her.
"Me too."
There was a moment of silence. A very awkward silence.
"So.. what do we do now?" Jessica asks.
Sam sighs and looks down to the ultrasound photo.
"I don't know."
"Well for the past few hours I've been thinking, and I've gone through every emotion possible.
I've decided that I'm not going to give up on us. Sam.. I love you. I know you. I've known you for eighteen years. You may not remember everything we have together. Everything we've been though. But I do. I have all of those memories, and I know in my heart that the Sam I know is just fighting to get out." Jessica had tears in her eyes, but held them in as best as she could.
"I'm not going anywhere. You are not going anywhere. We will both stay in this house with our kids, and I will continue to care for you, and help you remember our journey. Because I know that the man I am engaged to would want me to fight for this."
Sam looks at Jessica and doesn't say a word.
"Maybe this feels weird to you Sam, but it's what you need! You need to be around me and the kids to remember what we had. I'm not letting you just leave. I'm not trying to punish you. I'm trying to help you."
Sam takes a second before taking a deep breath and saying, "I really am a lucky man."
"Yes you are."
Sam chuckles softly.
Jessica laughs and wipes her cheeks of the tears that have fallen.
"I am going to take care of my husband.
I am going to tell you all about our past. I am going to help you remember because I love you! I'm your button, and you're my Sammy!"
"Button?"
"I'll tell you about it later." Jessica chuckles through her tears.
"Okay.. I really do want to remember, Jessica."
"I know you do, Sammy. And I'm sorry for being angry at you last night, but.. even though I know that if you weren't hurt, you would never say.. what you said. But it still got to me.. and it really really hurt me. So I was angry.
You're the only man that has ever truly loved me.. and to hear you say that.. it broke my heart." Jessica spoke in a shaky voice.
"I'm sorry." Sam says.
"Don't apologize, Sammy. It's gonna be okay. We just have to work together. I'm going to help you,"
"You love me so much, and I just want to give that back to you. It's not fair to you. That's why I wanted to leave.
You already have so much to with the kids, I don't want you having to care for me, especially when you're pregnant.
I thought you'd be better off without me."
"No! Never! You complete me, and without you here, I'd go crazy!"
"I just want you to take care of yourself as well."
"I will." Jessica smiles.
"Okay.. Well thank you. I appreciate all you've done, and all you're willing to do for me."
"You don't have to thank me, I'm your girl. I'll do anything for you."
"Aw.. Wow."
"What?" Jessica laughs.
"You're just so incredible."
"That sounds like my Sammy!" She smiles.
Sam chuckles.
"Can I hug you?"
"I'd love that!" She giggles.
"Heh! Come here." Sam lifts his arms.
"Sit on my lap."
"Ooh!"
Sam chuckles and rubs her back.
"Am I too heavy for you?"
"No, you're perfect."
"Aww.." Jessica pouts as her eyes fill with tears.
"Don't cry!"
"I can't help it!" Jessica carries harder.
Sam wipes her cheeks, then places his hand on her stomach and rubs his hand back and forth.
"No matter what happens with me, or between us.. I'll always do my very best to be the greatest father to these kids. I don't want you to ever feel alone in this. Even though I can't do much right now.. I'm here, and I'll do my best."
"I know. Thank you, Sammy.." Jessica pouts, then wraps her arms around him.
