Chapter 19. 'Mending relationships'

The elevator filled with tension as Dwalin gently got Thorin into it. He sat in his wheelchair, unaware of the argument you had with Dwalin before you got to the hospital. Both of them unaware of the danger you had gotten yourself in to.

Bilbo smiled. "Are you ready to go to the cabin?" he asked.

Thorin nodded. "Aye, anywhere but here. Have you ever tasted hospital food?" A chill ran down his spine.

"I am sure it tasted great" Bilbo said jokingly. "Don't worry about dinner tonight, I've got all the ingredients to make it feel like we are dining in my restaurant."

"Thank you, Bilbo."

Behind the two old friends, Dwalin and you were standing against the back of the elevator. You didn't look at each other, didn't pay attention to the conversation between Bilbo and Thorin.

Their conversation ended and the only sound you could hear was that of the elevator.

There were a lot of things you wanted to ask him.

Did it still hurt?

How was he feeling?

Did he miss you?

Did he regret savind you? Or did he wish he w-

Something soft touched your hand. You were awoken from your thoughts, meeting Thorin's concerned blue eyes. He brought your hand up to his lips, placing a soft kiss on the soft skin of your hand.

"Are you alright little dove?" He had turned his wheelchair around so that he was facing you.

Dwalin' shoulders tensed.

You managed to put on a fake smile. But you couldn't help the tremble in your voice. "Yes, yes, I'm fine. How are you doing?" You mentally kicked yourself.

Thorin gently squeezed your hand. "I'm feeling good. I am very happy that I get to come home with you." His eyes lit up. "How has our baboon over here been treating you in my absence?" he asked playfully.

You coughed awkwardly as Dwalin chuckled like he had a toothache. Question answered.

"Here we are" Bilbo announced too early. The elevator still had to get down a little more before the doors would open. "So, I was thinking that I would drive the car to our cabin. But before that I need to talk to security. (Y/N), will you come with me?"

"Yes!" you said a little too eager.

The doors of the elevator opened and you almost ran out. Thorin had a better radar for noticing emotions that you weren't even aware of yourself. He knew if something was going on by simply looking at someone.

"Maybe Dwalin can go with you instead?"

Bilbo and you turned around slowly. You almost got away without having to answer any questions. "We will be back in a few minutes Thorin" Bilbo said assuringly.

Thorin shook his head. "I would like for (y/n) to come with me. Do you mind going with Bilbo love?" He looked up at Dwalin with his blue eyes. Dwalin visibly melted.

"No, I don't mind." Dwalin nodded at Bilbo. "Let's go."

You felt a pat on your shoulder before they left you alone with Thorin. Quickly, so he wouldn't see your face, you walked to stand behind him and pushed the wheelchair towards the entrance.

"What is wrong?" Thorin asked.

You took in a deep breath. "Did you see the Lions winning the game last Saturday? If I remember correctly they won in the last second. You had a TV in your room, right?"

"Dove?"

"And summer is right around the corner. Just a few more days and we will be baking in the sun again. I can't wait for that. Maybe we get to sit outside in our cabin. Bilbo will know of all the details, I'm sure."

"(Y/N)..."

"If you feel up to it we could have a movie night. You know, just cuddling up under a blanket and eating popcorn. I could really go for some popcorn right now."

Thorin put his hands on the wheels, stopping you instantly. He turned around sharply. "What is going on between you and Dwalin?" he asked, his expression was stern.

Your mind didn't catch up fast enough. "I-I... we... you see we-"

"You had an argument?" he offered. When you nodded, he tapped his hand on his leg. "Sit little dove." He pulled you towards him when you didn't move. "What happened?"

"We just... I don't know." You hid your face in Thorin' clothing as the tears wouldn't be held back any longer.

Thorin pulled your hair back, softly stroking through it. His other arm snaked around your waist, pulling you closer to him. "Let it out love. Whatever he did, he is a baboon" he reminded you.

You laughed through your tears. "I am not sure it is his fault though" you admitted. More tears made their way down on to Thorin' blouse. "And I am ruining your clothes" you sniffled.

"Then it is a good thing I don't care that much about my clothes. Not when you are sad little dove." He kissed the top of your head. "Can you tell me what happened?"

You shook your head.

"No? But how can I get that baboon to understand what he did wrong when you won't tell me?" Thorin asked.

"It is my fault this time" you whispered.

Thorin pulled his shoulder back, trying to meet your eyes. "Tell me what happened" he spoke softly.

"We had a fight about... not really a fight but more of an argument... maybe not even that" you started. You weren't sure how you were supposed to call it.

The only thing that happened was that the both of you had been emotional because of obvious reasons. You had asked questions that he didn't answer. And you returned the favor.

"I don't care about the proper wording. I just want to know what happened" Thorin said with a calm voice.

You sighed deeply. "I have some questions about... about what happened and who Smaug is. Dwalin keeps telling me that it is not important but I feel like... don't I have the right to know exactly what is going on?"

Thorin listened to you in silence.

"All the secrecy, it just got to me when you weren't there. So I... We can talk about this tonight" you said. Maybe it was better to havet his conversation tonight instead of right away.

"Tell me" Thorin whispered.

You looked down at the wet spot on Thorin' blouse. "I-I made a mistake."

He waited for you to continue.

"KatiewasherebecauseshewantedtotellmewhathappenedandIdidn'tthinkitwouldmattersoIwentandmadeDwalinbelievethatIjustdidn'twanttogoupwithhimwhileIwasheresittingwithKatie." You looked at him wide eyed, scared that he had heard what you said.

His eyes darkened, wrinkles that you hadn't seen before appeared just above his eyebrows. "You met up with Katie without protection?"

Darn.

"I thought that she would give me the answers I was looking for. Neither of you would tell me anything. And besides, there is police here covering almost every tile in this hospital. Nothing was going to happen."

Thorin's arms around you tightened. "When did you meet up with her?" He looked around, expecting her to jump out at him at any point.

"WhileDwalinwasupstairswithyou" you answered, feeling more guilty than before.

His eyes shot back to you. "You what?" He shook his head, trying to clear his mind. "Please tell me Bilbo was with you."

You swallowed before answering. "At the end, yes."

"At the end... at the end... at the end he was" Thorin repeated over and over again. "At the end you were safe but before that, no... At the end."

Carefully, you got up from his lap. "Do I need to get a nurse?"

"(Y/N), do you have any idea how dangerous that was?" he asked in his low, deep voice. "Don't tell me you thought that was a smart idea. Because I deemed you to be much smarter than that."

"Much smarter than what? What is going on?"

You closed your eyes at hearing Dwalin' voice.

"She met up with katie here in the cafeteria whlie we were upstairs" Thorin said. His eyes stayed focused on you.

"YOU DID WHAT?" Dwalin bellowed. His voice boomed through the small entrance hall. Some police man came closer to you for inspectation.

Bilbo wrapped an arm around your shoulders. "We are not going to talk about this right now. You have all done and said some things that weren't particularly clever. Let's get into the car and to our safe house. Then, we can talk."

Thorin and Dwalin looked at each other before nodding. "But we are going to talk tonight before this mess gets any bigger" Thorin warned. He grabbed your hand as Dwalin pushed his wheel chair with one hand.

The other lrested on your hip.

Police surrounded you before you left the building. You had to wait for the team leader to give you permission to leave.

"We will be there soon" Bilbo whispered into your ear.

You nodded. "Is it far from here?" you asked.

The plan had been explained to you a week before. Not a lot of people knew where you were going. Only the leader of the police team, the driver of the car that would lead the way and the chief of police knew where you were going.

Hopefully no one else knew.

"We can't tell you" the police officer answered. "We don't know who is listening to our conversation. I received word that the suspect has been spotted in streets close to here. We can't take the risk."

A pang of guilt shot through you. Maybe she hadn't been here if it wasn't for you.

"Do you think she is going to follow us?" you asked.

The police officer didn't answer you.

"It is all going to be alright lass. You are not alone" Dwalin said assuringly. "We went over the plan ourselves. There shouldn't be a problem."

"There 'shouldn't' be a problem" you repeated.

Thorin looked up at you from his sitting position.

"We are good to go. Move fast but don't rush" the police officer commanded.

You sped walked to the car and sat down in the middle of the back seat. Bilbo took his seat in the front of the car.

Making it seem easy, Dwalin lifted Thorin up with one arm and deposited him on the seat on your right. "You could have been a little more careful" Thorin said jokingly.

The door was shut in his face.

He shook his head. "Well, at least we know Dwalin is anxious." He put his left hand on your leg. "How are you feeling?"

"As good as you might expect" you answered dryly.

The door to your left opened and Dwalin jumped in. "We can go."

"A shame I don't get to drive" Bilbo said, pouting. "Maybe it is for the best though," he said as the car drove off fast, "I'm not sure I could have got us there safe with this speed."

"You did choose to be a cook instead of a speed racer for a reason" Thorin pointed out.

Bilbo shrugged. "I think I make quite the driver" he said. "Just because I drove us into a lake that one time-"

Thorin laughed. "That is not even the worst example of your driving skills."

They continued pointing out how bad a driver the other person was for a few more minutes. But you stopped listening.

Dwalin pushed his shoulder against yours. "Hey you."

You smiled. "Hey you."

For the first time after your argument did he smile back at you. "You know I love you?"

You reached up to kiss him. "I know."

"And you know I will never let my lassie go?" He put a soft kiss on the tip of your nose. "Wouldn't miss you for the world. Thorin and you are the only ones that I couldn't do without." Tears gathered in the corner of his eyes.

You pulled up his right arm and draped it around your shoulders. Your body melted closer to his. "And I will do anything to keep you with me."

Behind you, Thorin smiled.
