Chapter 13. 'A beating heart'
Thorin was lucky that the ambulance was still there. He was rushed to the hospital after he was stabalized.
Dwalin held you close to his chest to prevent you from walking in the paramedics way. Maybe also so that he himself wouldn't walk in their way. Katie's bullet hadn't drilled into him like it had done with Thorin's chest.
For now, he seemed to be alright. One of the paramedics told you that he would likely survive the first night. That didn't calm you down one bit. Everything that happened had caught up with you and you were shaking because of all the stress.
They had given you some calming drugs and taken you in an ambulance with you. Dwalin wanted to join them but one of the cops that had stayed behind told him to clear his car out first. He was forced to drive Thorin's car back home before returning to get his own car and drive to the hospital.
It shouldn't be a surprise that he came running in to your room, covered in sweat. That's how you liked your Dwalin.
If the circumstances had been different, that is.
"How is he doing?" you asked, trying to get yourself up from the bed.
Dwalin rushed to your side to put you back down. "The nurses told me to keep you in this bed. You are not leaving lass" he said. He was gentle as he put you back down.
You held his hand in yours. Your sweet smile was enough for him to be able to smile back. "I missed you" you started. Dwalin brought a finger to your lips.
"You don't need to say anything lass. We understand how you felt. There is no need to apologise."
Dwalin leaned in to kiss you. "We love you, both of us do, never forget that" he said.
"And I love you."
Dwalin sighed deeply. You scooted over on your bed and patted your hand on the now empty side. "Lay down, you must be exhausted."
He doubted only for a second. Dwalin laid down beside you, careful as to not hurt you. He wrapped an arm around you and pulled you close to him. "I have missed this lass."
"It has only been one night" you giggled. You cuddled up closer to him. To be honest, you had missed his warmth too.
"I know, but we missed you during that one night. We could have lost you." His voice filled with emotion at that last sentence. Both of you knew what could have happened if you had gone back to your own house.
"How is Thorin doing?" you asked softly. You didn't really want to know, in case it wasn't going well.
"He is in surgery now. They will bring him here in his bed when they are done operating on him. The nurse thought that we would like that."
You nodded. "It will be easier for you that way too" you pointed out.
Dwalin smiled softly. "Aye, it is. Though I would still visit both of you if you weren't in the same room."
He fell asleep soon after because of everything that happened today. Dwalin was a big tough guy but he had a big heart. All of this had hit him pretty hard.
His snoring was what kept you up through the night. The surgery was taking rather long. All you could do was pray for Thorin to turn out alright.
And hoping that the lizard wouldn't visit.
Your heart skipped a beat when you thought about him.
You still weren't sure what had happened today. Your best friend had a gun and she had shot your boyf- Thorin with it.
It all felt so unreal.
Dwalin didn't seem to understand either. He had just hold you tight until the ambulance took you and Thorin away. The two loves of his life. You were glad you weren't in his shoes.
When it was almost midnight, the nurses brought Thorin to your room. There were lots of tubes connected to him. It seemed so strange to see him this vulnerable.
They put the bed right besides yours. It felt like the three of you were laying side by side in one giant bed.
The nurses asked you if you wanted something to eat or drink. You declined. If they weren't eating, then you weren't eating.
You slowly brought your hand to Thorin's. It feld oddly cold.
You crawled closer to him and Dwalin followed you in his sleep.
This was how it was supposed to be. Except for the hospital and Thorin almost getting killed.
He was safe for now. The only thing that counted was that the three of you were together. The hospital was a safe place for now.
You allowed yourself to catch some sleep.

"I see you failed to take her with you" he said. He was sitting at his desk, playing with a stressball.
Katie stood in front of him. She held her hands behind her back, trying to look him straight in the eyes. "A cop got in my way" she answered.
He chuckled, his tone anything but cheerie. "You managed to get her into your house, lock up her up and then you messed it up. Now tell me, did you really think she wouldn't go to her house when she heard it was burned down?"
Katie subconciously took a step back. "I-I thought she would still listen to me and I thou-"
"WELL YOU THOUGHT WRONG!" he bellowed. His voice echoed through the small room.
She could feel the spit landing on her face.
He smiled sweetly, dangerously. "The cop wasn't the only one who stopped you, now was it?"
Katie swallowed thickly. "N-no, the bl-black haired guy, he, he got in my way too."
"But you shot him?"
Katie gained some confidence. "Yes. Yes I did."
He pouted. "Too bad that he didn't die. He survived the surgery" he hissed.
"I-I am sorry sir, it won't h-happen again."
"No, you are right, it won't happen again. Because next time you make a mistake I will feed you to my dogs. In little pieces. Am I clear?"
"Y-yes sir."
He started playing with his stressball again. "Good. You may leave now. Say hello to Thorin for me next time you meet. Just make sure it is the last time we will ever have to see him."

(Thorin's P.O.V.)
I woke up early in the morning.
There was a sound in the room. The sound of my own heartbeat, displayed on a machine.
To my right, there was also the sound of my boyfriend snorring. At least he was doing alright. The last thing I remember was falling to the ground and seeing him covering (y/n).
Where was (y/n)?
I know I shouldn't put too much stress on myself but I had to know where she was. When I tried to prob myself up on my elbow, I felt her arm around my waist.
I looked down and found that she was sleeping.
My heartbeat returned to a normal, steady beating.
I placed a gentle kiss on her head. We had only spend one night apart but it felt like it had been much longer. At least they were here with me now.
The nurses had been kind enough to let me sleep beside me. It was better this way. Dwalin would have been here anyway, I am sure of that. (Y/N) probably would have been forced to stay in her own room if we couldn't stay together.
This brought all of us more peace. Knowing we were all safe.
I laid my head back down on my pillow. It was still aching. Hopefully it would go away tomorrow.
My mind immediately went back to the moment we were talking to Katie. The moment we met her at the club with (y/n) I could tell that there was something strange about her.
It had been a smart move on our side not to take her with us that night. We could have been dead already if we had.
Still, I had never thought she was working for the lizard. And then the gun...
I didn't see it coming in time. It was my fault (y/n) had been in danger. I could have saved her.
Just like my father.
Dwalin and (y/n) were so peacefully asleep right now. Neither of them should have been in this situation. But they were because of me.
Dwalin had told me many times over that he would stand by my side in every situation. At that moment, neither of us had known in which direction Smaug would take it.
He had hired someone to enter our lives. We should count ourselves lucky that we fell for (y/n) instead of Katie. There was no reason to suspect (y/n).
I could tell by the look in her eyes that she was honest in her actions and words. She didn't come across as sneaky as Katie.
I stroked her hair. This was good.
If only I could get Smaug to leave us alone. We could have many happy years together. Maybe even a little one if we tried.
Was it strange to have these feelings about someone you just met? Maybe it was, but it happened with other people all over the world. Sometimes you just feel that it is right.
And this was.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, you were up early because you heard murmurs all around you. You opened your eyes and were greeted with the sight of a short man with a worried look and honey colored hair.
"You see! You woke her up" the man hissed.
His voice sounded cute to you. He was the type of man that was still adorable when he was angry or very, very pissed. Like right now.
Dwalin, apparently, felt the same way because he simply chuckled when the man shot him an angry glare."Just relax Bilbo. The lass had to wake up anyway. She has been sleeping for far too long." This, of course, earned him an elbow in the ribs.
"What did you do that for?" Dwalin asked, pretending to be hurt.
Bilbo snorted. "Right what you deserved." He changed his attention to yours. "Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Bilbo."
You shook his hand. "It is nice to meet you too. My name is (y/n). Are you a friend of the boys?"
Bilbo snickered. "So, she calls you the 'boys'? I suppose that is more accurate then 'man'."
Dwalin was now the one who was glaring. "I am not a boy" he huffed.
You and Bilbo shared an amused smirk. "Of course not sweetie, do you want to get some chocolate? I have some money for the machine" you said jokingly.
A loud snore from your left stopped Dwalin from tickling you.
The three of you froze, looking at Thorin like you could wake a dragon up any second now. His hold on your hand tightened, but that was it. His sleep was not yet disturbed.
"Maybe I should get myself a chocolate bar. The money is in your coat?" Dwalin asked. He got up from the bed to look for your coat.
Bilbo rolled his eyes. "They never told me where they met you" he said, trying to ignore the man-child that was searching for some change.
You smiled. "Neither did they tell me how they know you, or, that you even existed. Dwalin, why did you not tell me that?" you asked. The only response you got was a frustrated growl from beneath the bed.
"Thorin and I have been friends since preschool. At first he didn't like me but I saved him from our teacher once. He wouldn't stop treating me like a baby afterwards. They really care a lot about people, if you manage to make it into their circle."
You raised an eyebrow. "Their circle?"
Bilbo nodded as he sat down on the windowsill. "They don't trust everyone they meet. I think that now, after all this, that you understand why. If you do make it into that exclusive circle." He stopped for a minute, watching Thorin breath.
"Then they do everything for you. Even put their own lives at risk" you finished in a murmur.
"Yes, they do" Bilbo said.
"I got it!" Dwalin yelled triumphantly. He hit his head as he tried to get back up but he was too happy to care. "Come on Bilbo, come with me" he said as he was already walking away.
"I guess I will see you in a minute then. Take good care of him." With a nod to Thorin, Bilbo left too.
You raised Thorin's arm a little so you could cuddle up closer to him. Bilbo was a real nice guy. It wasn't strange that Thorin hadn't told you about him before. You only knew each other for a few days after all.
The minutes passed by rather rapidly. And Dwalin still wasn't back.
Your head rested on Thorin's chest. Every now and then he would sigh in his sleep. It was really adorable. You played with his beard as he continued to rest. It was great past time.
"The only thing I don't understand, is... are we boyfriend and girlfriend now? I mean... I did walk away and everything" you said. It stung when you thought about it. The moment you had walked away, the night your house burned down. And then the moment Thorin got shot...
"I love you" you said, looking at his closed eyes.
Thorin looked so peaceful. All the tubes were still there but thankfully he was alive. His heart was still beating, and he was holding your hand. That must mean he had been awake during the night.
He was just sleepy from the surgery. It had taken quite a long time. There was nothing for you to worry about.
"It is rather sad that he didn't say it back, isn't it?"
You tried to get up fast when you heard that voice. But you couldn't.
Thorin's arm felt heavy on your body. It kept you down on the bed. There was no way that you could keep up. This may be the only time you would complain about him working out.
Smaug circled around the bed. He was watching Thorin with a wicked grin.
You desperately tried to get up or to push the button that would alert the nurse. You reached for it, but couldn't make it. The button was too far away from you.
Smaug clicked with his tongue. "Don't even bother trying. Even if you did manage to reach it, none of the nurses would come here to help you."
Reason quickly made way for panic. You had to do something. "DWALIN!" you shouted.
Smaug chuckled. "You are so adorable." He was watching you trying to get Thorin's arm off of you. "Really adorable." He came closer and sat down on the bed.
The only sound you heard in the room was the sound of Thorin's heartbeat on the machine. It was a steady beat that didn't calm you down like it normally did.
"Burning your house wasn't enough of a warning to you?" he asked.
"What do you mean?" you asked.
Smaug smiled. "I already warned you back at their house. I can destroy everything you love. It would be wise if you didn't stay with them." He licked his lips. "Did they already tell you what I am capable of?"
His eyes were looking directly at you. They burned right through the back of your skull.
"Stop, stop, stop." You placed your hands on your ears. You didn't want to hear what he had to say. He was trying to get inside your mind.
"DWALIN!" you tried again. But there were no hurried footsteps coming down to your room. Nor were their screams or bangs on the door of someone trying to get in.
How was Smaug able to come in to the hospital? Police was looking for him. They had to be here.
Yes. That was why he was in here.
They were on his tail. They would be here any moment now.
You just had to wait.
Any minute now.
You opened your eyes. Smaug was still sitting there.
He wasn't looking at you anymore. His eyes were now focused on the tubes going from Thorin to the machines around him. His hand lay on the tube of the air support.
"A curious thing, isn't it? He was supposed to be dead but these machines keep him alive. Isn't that against nature?" Smaug wondered out loud. He slightly squeezed the tube for a second.
"Don't you dare" you hissed at him. Again, you tried to get Thorin's arm off of you. There was no one else to protect him. You had to protect him like he had protected you a day ago.
For some reason, you couldn't move your limbs. In slow motion you could see Smaug starting to smile as he kept his fingers squeezed on the tube.
The monitor that registered Thorin's heart beat started to slow down. Less and less heartbeats a minute.
Suddenly, he woke up, gasping for air.
"THORIN!" you shouted.
Then, it all went dark.
