Chapter 12. 'Friends and enemies'
You didn't listen to Katie when she told you she would get the car. You dressed yourself, put on your shoes and ran out the door.
Many thoughts crossed your mind as you ran through the streets.
What had you gotten yourself in to?
Within one week, your whole life had flipped itself upside down.
"(Y/N)!" Katie yelled.
You didn't stop or slow down. If what she said was true, then all your stuff was gone. Everything you had worked so hard for would be burned down.
The smoke was still rising from the remainders of your house as you came closer. It made it all more real.
Tears were already streaming down your cheeks. You hadn't seen your 'house' yet but you did no longer doubt Katie's words. That guy who had attacked you earlier must have done it.
But you were still unsure if this was something Thorin and Dwalin would do. A feeling of disbelief had been creeping up on you ever since you had left their house.
Of course there were a lot of creeps out there but they didn't feel like creeps...
Your mind was messed up. So many thoughts were going round and round in your head. It was like your head was a merry-go-'round but in this case it didn't stop.
When you finally entered your street you saw what had happened to your house. It wasn't just your house that was burned down. Four more houses had been burned down. All four of them had been built close to yours. They were all gone now.
Police cars, ambulances and fire fighters were standing outside. Some of your neighbours were still there. You ran towards them. You needed to know what had happened.
"(Y/N)!" your neighbour yelled when she saw you coming her way. She had been crying, her eyes were puffy and red. She threw her arms around her when you finally reached her. "We though you were still in there" she said.
Tears stung your eyes. "I am so glad to see you are alright. How are the others?"
She pulled back a little. "Little Lou from next door only suffers from a broken leg. Some of us have inhaled too much smoke from the fire but they are also fine. All of us could have been a lot worse."
"Are you the missing neighbour?" a cop asked.
You turned around to face him. "Yes, yes I am."
The cop pointed at his car. "Can you come with me to give me a statement?" he asked, though he more likely meant it as an order.
You nodded. "I will be right back" you said to your neighbour before you followed the cop.
You looked around as you walked to the cop's car. The place gave you the chills. Not only your life had changed tonight. Whoever had done this, had also ruined the houses of three of your neighbours.
The questions of the cop didn't really sink in with you as you answered truthfully.
He wanted to know where you had been that night, why you had chosen that night to be away from home and why you were here now. At some points it felt like he was suspecting you.
Until the moment you mentioned what happened to you in the days before.
He lifted his eyebrow. "Why didn't you come to the police after this happened?" he asked.
You looked down at the ground. "I don't know why I didn't" you answered. It just hadn't crossed your mind.
The cop walked to the front of his car and grabbed something. He came back, holding a photo in one hand.
"Did he look like this guy?" he said as he gave you the photograph.
You took the photo from him. And immediately let go. The photo fell down to the ground. Your hands started shaking and your heartbeat went up.
That couldn't be.

"She has a lot of missed calls" Dwalin said, holding your phone.
Thorin grunted in response. His guys were watching you and Katie. They had told him that she had locked you up in your home.
At some point in the morning you had looked at them through the window. Maybe you were feeling watched. He would have to have a word with them if that was the case.
Dwalin scrolled down your missed phone calls before he went to your messages. He almost dropped the phone to the ground. "Thorin, you have to see this" he said, getting up with the phone raised.
Thorin raised a finger to tell him to wait, his phone was ringing. "Yes?"
His face fell when his spies told him they were following you as you ran away from Katie's house. They said you were crying. Thorin could hear his own heart break.
"Thorin" Dwalin said, almost pushing the phone in his face.
His boyfriend didn't react, he only turned away from him. Dwalin laid the phone down before running downstairs. He grabbed his car keys and jumped into his car. There was no time to wait for Thorin.
Thorin turned around when he heard Dwalin's car driving away. "Yes. Thank you." He put his phone away. Why was he in such a hurry? What could be so important?
For a moment he thought about following him but then he noticed the phone on the table. He picked it up and knew why Dwalin had left in a hurry.
Thorin also ran downstairs to follow Dwalin in his car.
Your house had burned down. And even though they knew you weren't there during the night they were still worried. You were going there now. Maybe the lizard had expected that.
Thorin knew full well why the lizard was targeting you this way. The lizard was trying to get into your head. He had managed to separate you from them.
If Katie hadn't picked you up and taken you in for the night then - He didn't want to think about what could have happened.
Both of them were driving way too fast. There was no speed limit when it came to your safety.
They had arrived at the scene before they knew it. Dwalin was already running towards the burned houses when Thorin drove into the street.
The smell of burned wood immediately reached his nostrils as he got out of the car. There were still a few police cars when they arrived.
"DON'T YOU DARE COME NEAR HER!"
It alerted Thorin. He ran to where he thought the sound came from. When he ran around a police car he saw what was wrong.
He could see Dwalin shouting at Katie. She was standing in front of you... Thorin ran their way. He just wanted to make sure you were safe. After that, he would leave without trouble if that is what you wanted.
The police tried to negotiate between the three but it didn't happen.
"Calm down! We just want to make sure she is alright" Thorin said as he stood next to Dwalin.
The police man sighed in defeat. "I can't handle four of them" he told his partner.
"No need officer. I am taking my friend home. I don't want to see them near her" Katie hissed.
"That is not your decision to make" Dwalin growled.
Thorin put a hand on his arm to calm him down. They couldn't do anything in front of a cop. Though he understood exactly what Dwalin felt.
"It is not your decision to make eith-"
"I already told you I do want to speak to them" you said, trying to make your way around Katie.
You had told her right away what the cop had showed you. It was a picture of the guy who had attacked you with the knife.
The cop had told you all that he knew. The guy was a wanted criminal who had managed to escape the law for many years now.
He was known to rob banks, threaten people with knives and to steal from the Durin family.
When he said that name you knew that they hadn't been lying. Or they would have had to pay the cops to lie for them. Or they could have hired people to act. But you knew that all those theories were far fetched.
Katie had tried to talk you out of visiting them. But you were determined. You had to told them what you found out and apologize for assuming the worst.
However, Katie didn't let go. She was trying to push you towards the car with her when you heard Dwalin calling your name. You turned your head and saw him running towards you.
But Katie wouldn't let you go just yet. It only seemed to make her more determined to get you into her car. She mumbled something about having to take you to the library but you didn't quite catch that. You didn't want to be taken anywhere.
And now you were here. Katie still wouldn't let you get around her to get to Dwalin and Thorin.
Thorin took a step forward. "Let the lass do what she wants" he said. He had taken an instant disliking to her when they met her at the club. She only made it worse with her behaviour right now.
She smiled, challenging him to come closer. "Don't forget that there are cops here" she said as a warning.
Thorin narrowed his eyes. "You should listen to your own advice. Don't keep (y/n) from us when she wants obviously wants to be with us right now."
You tried to get out of her tight grip but she held you too tight. "What are you doing Katie?" you asked.
"She has to come with me. Don't challenge me" Katie said. Her eyes were focused on Thorin'. He didn't move a muscle.
Dwalin tried to come closer to you but Katie noticed. Something wicked was going on with her and you couldn't tell what it was.
You could see the desperation in Dwalin's eyes. There was no telling how you must look right now.
"Miss, may I advice you to let your friend go? You can't keep her with you against her will" the cop jumped in.
Katie didn't even acknowledge him. "Why don't you just give in?" she asked Thorin.
You really didn't understand what was going on anymore. "What are you talking about Katie? Just let me go. They won't hurt me. I just told you what the cops told me" you tried to reason with her.
She didn't budge. "Be quiet" she hissed.
You frowned. What was she doing?
"Let. Her. Go." Thorin said. The anger in his voice was unmistakingly there.
"Why can't you let (y/n) come with us? Just let her go and we won't bother you again" Dwalin said desperately. He needed to hug you, it couldn't wait much longer.
Thorin placed himself a little in front of Dwalin and a bit closer to you. "You don't have to work for him. What is in it for you? Everyone knows he keeps it all for himself."
"What are you talking about?" you asked confused. You looked at Katie. She only had eyes for Thorin, and they didn't look too friendly.
Katie brought her hand to the bag around her shoulder.
Thorin run towards her and pushed you away from her.
Before Dwalin could do anything, Katie had grabbed her gun and shot Thorin.
Everything after that happened quite fast. You saw Katie reaching for your arm but Dwalin had thrown himself on top of you.
The cops were shooting at Katie and she was shooting back.
You heard her car driving away.
The cops followed her.
And then, there was the blood.
