After a night of bliss, I was forced to go back out in the world and be a person. Which was hard to do when a gorgeous naked man lay on top of me, snoring quietly into my neck as he slept. I really didn't want to move, but I was so late to pick up my dad for physical therapy the next day after the events that happened at J.D.'s house.
My dad and I went out to eat afterwards, and I tried to act normal, but if I'm honest, I had a pep in my step. I was also starving. When I woke up the first time at J.D.'s house we went at it again like a pair of horny teenagers. I felt like I had missed out on so much.
Who knew sex was this great.
It was a phone call at eight that woke me up again. My father, who was just making sure I was on the way, woke me back into reality. I showered and stopped off by my house to change, making it to therapy with my dad only a few minutes late. Lucky for us, the nurse was also a few minutes behind.
"You're never late for these things Zamora, are you feeling okay?" My dad said, biting into his hash browns. He placed a hand on my forehead, checking for a fever.
How do I explain to the man that I was fine, and I just got laid.
"Yeah, just, didn't hear my alarm." I had ordered the biscuits with gravy, not a usual for me, but I was so hungry.
Who knew sex wore you out this much. Once we had the first round, the second time around was much longer and more intense than the last.
"Well, good thing I called or not my new girlfriend would have to take me." He looked up at me and smiled like a little kid.
"So, it's official with you and Patty?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Yes." He nods. There was a small pause between us, I didn't exactly know what to say. "Your mom and I talked about this when she was first sick, you know. She told me that if I didn't find someone on my own, she would send me someone." He smiled big, eating his eggs. "Are you mad at me?"
I took a deep breath and put my head in my hands. "Not even a little bit. I know you have been lonely, and after the accident, in the hospital, you said something when you were in pain that killed me inside. You said that no one would want you, especially after what happened. I knew that wasn't true. I'm happy for you dad, you have a big heart and deserve to be happy."
My dad, usually a tough man, wiped a tear from his eyes. "Well shit, that went better than expected." We both laughed as I stood up to give him a hug. "So...are you dating J.D.?"
I knew it was never easy with him.
"Dad -" I shook my head, sitting back down. Our waitress walked around for more coffee and smiled at us.
"What, he likes you, you know. When the boy took me to therapy, he asked so many damn questions about you, like a lovesick puppy." He shakes his head. "I like him, if you do, but just be careful."
I looked around, confused. "What do you mean?"
"Well, he's been in some trouble in the past." He shrugged, looking at our waitress. "Is the coffee cake fresh?"
"Sure, is sugar, just baked it this mornin'" her thick southern accent beamed. "How about a big slice for you and your little girl?"
"How 'bout it?" He looks to me as if he didn't just say something serious.
"Yeah, that's fine, thank you." I smile at the waitress and watch as she leaves. "What trouble?"
"Hmm?"
I'm going to scream.
"You just said that J.D. has been in some trouble? What kind of trouble?"
I knew J.D. as a kid, I have a faint memory of the few times we were around each other and remember him being a bit of a troublemaker, but mostly to my little brother or at school if I could recall. Not that it mattered, but it would be great to hear that he wasn't violent or dangerous.
I couldn't deal with that again.
"Well, I was talking to his old man a few weeks before you two started 'hanging out.'" He used his hands to make quotation marks. "Anyways, he told me that when J.D. was younger, he got into some trouble selling illegal car parts and stripping cars, selling them to chop shops...possible grand theft. Made a pretty penny off of it, but when it came down to getting arrested, the boy got a lawyer. Some dirty cop was busted - they pretty much had no choice but to drop charges."
Morally wrong, yes. Not too crazy.
"Oh... well, I'm sure - "I stopped suddenly and remembered the amount of money he had in his wallet the last time I went over. A small detail that might not mean anything. Whatever the case, I wasn't his girlfriend, and the past is the past. "He did that stuff when he was younger."
"Oh, I'm sure, I just don't want you getting mixed up in anything. If you like him and you want to see him, you have my blessing - not that you or your brother care too much about that." A slice of coffee cake was set in front of us, which he quickly grabbed a fork and began to dig in.
"I do care what you think. I do like him, and he and I are hanging out." I took a bite of cake and nodded in approval.
"Well then, just be safe."
"Dad!" I rolled my eyes as he laughed.
"What! Your mother was better at this than I am. You're a grown-up Zamora, and I want you to be happy too. But for the love of God, be safe, and tell that boy just because I have one leg, doesn't mean I can't kick his sorry little ass. I mean it, and if you don't tell him I said that, bring him around, and I will tell him myself. Understood?"
"Yes, sir." I took another bite of cake. I knew when to take the man serious. I felt him reach over and pinch my cheek.
"I love you." He said a bit more lighthearted.
"I love you too, dad."
