The Sitter
Patton's POV:
"Logan, dear, love of my life."
"This doesn't sound like it is going anywhere good."
"That is the fourth women you've sent home crying. You need to lighten up honey."
Logan sighed and ran a hand through his hair, messing it up slightly. I reach up and put it back into place as best I could and take hold of his hand. We've been holding interviews to find a sitter for Virgil and it hasn't been going well. Logan woke up in a grumpy mood, probably nervous, and has been taking it out on the interviewees.
Virgil isn't fairing any better. Poor kiddo hasn't seemed to like anyone, hiding behind one of us each time one of them introduces themselves. This, in turn, causes Logan to be rude to them. I just try to keep the peace but at this rate we're running out of people and we need to find someone before our vacation days run out.
"I'll try to be nicer but honestly these people lack basic intelligence. I don't want someone who can't think to be taking care of my child."
"How about after this person we break for lunch? I think this is overwhelming you and Virgil a bit."
Logan clears his throat and nods while grabbing the next application. "That would be wonderful Patton, I will admit to...not feeling the best right now. The next applicant should be here any moment, their name is Daniel....Serpent? What an unique last name."
"I've certainly never met anyone with that last name."
Virgil has taken to playing underneath the table by our feet with some cars in order to be apart of the process but still be close to us. I really hope he warms up to someone, otherwise we might have to consider daycare and I feel like that will overwhelm him even more. Of course when he starts school we'll have to be careful but that isn't for a few years so I push that thought to the back of my mind.
The doorbell rings and Virgil pops his head out from the table cloth to look up at us. "Do you want to answer it this time Virgil?" He shakes his head and pops back under the table, putting the first smile I've seen today on Logan's face.
"I'll get it dear, I need to stretch my leg out."
I nod as Logan gets up to get the door. I read over the application we received while waiting for them to come back into the dinning room. This Daniel seems like the most educated application we've had all day with a masters degree and a bachelors. Maybe Logan will like him! He also has previous sitter experience which is helpful, oh! and he's willing to help out with chores around the house. I'm not sure we'll need that but it is helpful to know that the offer is on the table.
I looked up from the papers just in time to see my husband walk back into the dinning room with another man in tow. Said man was a bit on the shorter side and wore a bowler hat for some reason. He placed his really long coat on the back of the chair before sitting across from us. Only when he had taken off the hat did I notice a burn scar on the left side of his face.
"Daniel Serpent, a pleasure." Oh and an accent, he is just full of surprises. We both shake hands and Logan starts the interview off like he did the rest of them.
Standard questions first like, "Do you have experience with children?", "What is your weekly schedule?", "Do you have a problem with ducks?", and "Your relationship status?". I told Logan that last one was too personal but he didn't want the sitter to be bringing strangers into the house.
So far Daniel's answers have been to Logan's liking, judging on how the questions are getting a bit more in dept. The degrees turned the tables in Daniel's favour, and he got extra points from me when he suggested teaching Virgil basic things like his colours, shapes, how to read, all before he goes to school so he can be prepared.
Now came the tricky part. Meeting Virgil. I smiled at Daniel while Logan tried getting Virgil out from under the table.
"Virgil gets anxious around strangers and isn't fond of meeting new people, don't take it personally."
"I understand. Most children are more interested in the left side of my face than the rest of me, I can be a little off putting."
"Oh no! Really it's not like that! He really is just shy!"
Virgil pokes his little head out from under the table so you can only see his eyes, which immediately lock with Daniel's. Logan also comes back up from under the table whispering to me that he owes Virgil ice cream after dinner.
"Hello. I'm Daniel. How are you?" Virgil blinks at him before going back under the table. Logan and I sigh thinking that we may never find a sitter at this point. What we didn't expect was for Virgil to pop up on the other side next to Daniel, and by the way he jumped neither did Daniel.
"Hello on this side." Virgil stares up at him for the longest time before he says anything.
"......I wear hat....please?"
Daniel smiles and plops the hat on Virgil's head causing him to giggle when it goes pass his eyes.
"You have a very handsome boy here, the hat merely completing the look."
"I is pretty."
"Apologies. A very pretty boy."
Logan and I are in shock. Virgil had a hard time warming up to us in the beginning and yet here he is with Daniel, a stranger, without a care in the world. I know we should feel proud because Virgil is coming out of his shell but that tiny bit of jealousy is still there. Logan is the first to recover, literally shaking his head to focus.
"I must say that I am in shock.. Virgil has never warmed up to someone so quickly. He tends to be wary of strangers."
"I'm shocked too. He is the first child to not point out my burns right off the bat."
Virgil gives him back his hat before making his way back to us declaring that he is hungry. I stand and pick him up before smiling at Daniel.
"You're the first person that Virgil has liked today, but we would like to be fair to the others that applied so we won't offer the job yet. You are the number one contender though! If you'll excuse me I have to get lunch going."
"No worries. I must be on my way as well. I hope to be in touch very soon." Daniel shakes both our hands, waves at Virgil and lets Logan walk him to the door. While walking into the kitchen I turn my attention to Virgil.
"Did you like Mr. Daniel Virgil?"
He nods, "Let me wear hat. Nice."
"That's good kiddo. Now what do you want for lunch?"
"Dinno nuggets!!!!"
"Dinno nuggets it is!"
"Papa make noise?"
"Papa will make all the dinno noises you want baby."
Logan walks into the kitchen and takes Virgil into his arms. "When did I agree to make dinosaur noises?"
I smile as Virgil babbles on about dino nuggets, getting started on them while thinking about Daniel. He seemed nice enough, very qualified and Virgil liked him. Logan and I will have to talk it over some more but he may be the right one for us.
