Parker's POV
I stared down at the substance that was covering my shoes. I also stared down at the girl who was in my arms, out cold. I also stared into the never-ending crowd that seemed to not be able to see me. I also stared at the bathroom that she had desperately needed to go to. I stared at everything. At once. And I knew that wasn't possible.
"Tiana?" I said, shifting her so that she was in my right arm and poking her cheek with my free hand. She didn't budge.
Oh Lord, why do you put me through such trials?
I walked in my smelly shoes to the nearest table I could find, and leaned her against the floor, not forgetting to pull down her dress that was starting to roll up. I took off my shoes and bunched up a handful of kleenex tissues and tidied them up the best I could. Just then Nate came up to me, looking pale.
I immediately pointed to the right, showing him where the bathroom was before he could puke on me. He nodded slightly and put out his fingers in an okay sign, scurrying off into the direction.
The stench of my shoes was vibrating through the air, so I popped in a raspberry icebreaker to refresh my scent. I plopped myself next to her on the floor, letting out a tired sigh.
I looked at her. Her eyelashes were extremely long, almost as long as Chloe's except I was sure her's were fake. Her sharp nose stood out of her face, filling it with dignity. Her lips, full and colored in a redish wine color, made me gulp.
I absolutely did not enjoy the kiss with Chloe. I had tried my best to get her off of me, but I understood that the picture would have been astonishing to Tiana. I had tried to tell her that when we were dancing, but she seemed so happy that I didn't want her to open her eyes and be disappointed that it was me.
Did she like the stranger she was dancing with?
What if she found out it was me?
Would she like him then, too?
Questions of doubt bubbled up in my mind and almost consumed me, making me want to start the day all over again. And the smell of the vomit was definitely not helping. I should have just let her go to the bathroom. But no, I had to go on about what the situation had been like!
Nate came running back to me, now looking much better. He looked at me, then Tiana, then my shoes, each one for around five seconds before moving on to the next.
"Three questions," he said cautiously.
"Shoot," I took a deep breath.
"Why is she dead?" Nate questioned.
"She was drunk and she passed out," I groaned.
"Bummer. Less exciting." Nate shrugged. "Why is your hair like a plastic bag caught in a tree?" He frowned. "It took me two hours to do that you know!"
"Because I'm trying to think of what to do!" I groaned even louder.
"That is not a good excuse. Last question: Why did you dip your shoes in the sewage?" He pinched his nose. "I told everyone not to throw food in there!"
I just buried my face in my hands. Where would I ever get with this guy.
"I need you to put her on my back," I said, standing up.
"Yay!" he jumped on my back wrapping his arms around my neck.
"Get off of me, you huge chimpanzee!" I pushed him off of me and saw him pouting.
"Suck up your bottom lip, or I'm gonna tear it off, Nate." I smirked. He did as he was told.
With each hand holding one pair of the soggy shoes, Nate helped me put Tiana on my back and walked me back to my car, opening the door for me. I slid Tiana into the back seat where she repositioned herself into a more comfortable state. I sighed and threw the shoes into the passenger seat, not caring about walking only in my socks.
"You sure you can take care of my Princess all alone?" Nate asked. "I can lend a hand you know."
I hesitated before I nodded. "I'll just take her to my place. Ben's out, and I don't want to wake up her parents. She'll creep back in the first thing tomorrow morning."
"Okay," he backed up as I pulled the car out of the parking space.
"Oh, and Nate?" I stuck my head out to speak to him.
"Huh?" He twirled back to look at me.
"Don't call her your princess."
"I'm sorry," Tiana muttered.
My head snapped back to check if she was okay. She was still asleep, and muttering while in her dreams.
"I'm sorry, Peter," she said a little bit more louder.
"Please, stop," she let out a whimper as she crawled deeper into the back of the seat.
"Tiana, you okay?" I asked, as I turned a right curve carefully.
"I love you." My heart cringed at those words. They weren't for me, but for the guy named Peter and I could almost see the words materialize in her real love for him. Did she already have a boyfriend? Was this 'Peter' why she had said she didn't care if I kissed Chloe or not?
No, but she had a connection with me. A feeling that pulled me up from being buried for so long. An electrical spark.
That was something.
I decided to push away the thoughts and concentrate on getting the situation handled.
I picked up my phone and searched Ben in my contacts. I found a contact called, 'Beautiful Ben Alert! Pick up your phone!' and smirked before I pressed the dial button.
"Hello?" he answered almost immediately.
"Where are you?"
"Um... I'm not sure how I ended up here, but at the playground. Why?" Ben said sleepily. "I'm exhausted."
"Well you'd better come pick up your sister. She's drunk and in my car right now," I said.
He paused. "Do I have to have the conversation with her?"
"What conversation?"
"The car sex one."
My cheeks burned. "It's not like that!"
"Oh, it better be not like that Kane. I'm gonna kill you when I have to have those conversations with her because of you," he hissed. I gulped.
"Okay. I'll take note of that. Just take her home." I turned on the seat heaters, seeing Tiana shiver from the chilly night.
"I'm too drunk for that."
"Then what am I supposed to do?" I whined.
"Take her to your house, dumbass. But don't you dare think of anything irresponsible," Ben warned and hung up.
I growled at the dead line and sighed. Parking into the garage I closed the door as I killed off the engine.
Getting out of the car, I threw my shoes next to the hose for cleaning the first thing next morning. I put on a pair of sandals and opened the back seat door. I pulled her out by her arms and lifted her like a bride.
Walking up the stairs, I realized that I had never brought a girl into my room yet. Then again, Tiana was the first girl to do a lot of things to me. She was special. More than I could think of anyone else as, even though I had only met her a couple of days ago.
I dumped her on my bed and pulled the covers onto her, making sure she would sleep warm. She slipped out a thin breath from her lips as she cuddled into the bed.
I crouched down on the floor next to the bed, watching her sleep. Her eyelids slightly fluttered before becoming still as I pulled her hair out of her face.
She was so real in every way. The looks on her face, the touch of her fingers, the smell of her skin, even just the air around her was like it was meant to be.
Her smile was the thing that pulled me towards her most fiercely, like a fire that was getting uncontrollable.
It was as if she was a lion waiting for her prey, while I was the little boy, young and foolish, and mesmerized by her mane. Going closer and closer, and finally getting eaten by the beautiful but merciless creature.
She was a lion.
Ferociously capturing, but deadly.
She was breaking down my fake walls, one by one, leaving trails of bricks like crumbs of bread to show that I had lost to her. I couldn't understand how just by being with her, made me feel so exposed and willing to give what I had for her. But one thing I was sure of was that I did want to be with her. I did want to break down my walls. And I did want to be real when I was with her. Only she made me think that, and she made me want something I had never wanted before.
Attention.
I wanted all her attention on me like she was doing unconsciously to me. Every single moment I was thinking of her, trying to memorize every detail of her.
She was doing it to me even right now, as she was sleeping and I noticed that she had started to sweat. Her eyebrows scrunched up as if she were in pain. My hand lifted by itself and brushed on top of hers trying to give her hints that I was here. But of course she wouldn't know.
I stood up to get her some clothes to change into. Dialing Ben's number, I closed my bedroom door behind me. He answered in three seconds.
"What is it, now?" Bem whined.
"I need you to get her some clothes to change into," I said straightfoward.
"I'm in the middle of something here!" Ben exclaimed.
"I don't want to know what that something is. Just bring them," I demanded. "Your sister is much more important than whatever your doing right now."
"Hey! I set my priorities! Besides, she's with you. Isn't that safe enough?"
"Of course she's safe with me. But-"
"Then get her some clothes yourself. Underwear in the cabinet on the bottom left of her closet. Chop chop," Ben chirped.
"Wait!"
"What?" Ben groaned.
"It's tresspassing!" I practically yelled into my phone.
"So? I've done it a million times to get into a girl's bedroom, never been caught."
"Please tell me why you aren't in jail already?" I put a hand on my waist.
"My charms," he smirked.
"How do I get in?" I asked.
"Geez, Parker. Never knew you were this dumb. Through the window, you idiot." I could almost see him rolling his eyes.
"But her room is on the second floor!"
"Exactly. Use your brain. Oh and remember, I like chipmunks more than squirrels." Ben grinned and hung up.
I ran my hand along my face in frustration. I am definitely never attending another party. Ever again.
The tree towered over me; the trunk huge along with the thick vegetation on the top. I touched the rugged bark with my hand feeling the rough surface. I steadied my foot on the bottom of the trunk and pushed myself off the ground, gritting my teeth to keep from falling off. Reach by reach of my hand, I got closer to the window as my hands grew more scratched and splintered. My grunts were getting louder, and I just hoped that Tiana's parents wouldn't hear them and find a strange boy climbing up to their daughters room to steal her clothes.
I would die rather than go through that embarrassment.
I cautiously reached out and opened the window, the other arm wrapped tighly around the tree. Swinging my leg inside, I plastered myself to the wall, desperately moving carefully not to fall off. When I successfully got into her room, my breath was quick as I plopped myself on the floor in exhaustion. I breathed in her familiar scent, sweet and sour like a ripe kiwi.
I scanned her room which looked similar to mine except for the white furniture and no soccerballs.
I stood up and slowly walked around, drinking in the sight in her room. Her desk was messy, with post-it's stuck on the walls. Reminders of what she had to do were scribbled onto them as if she didn't have much time to write them. I found the CD player she had taken out that day at the wetlands resting on the bookshelf along with a bunch of labeled CDs. I shuffled through them.
Pete's favorites
Hi, peeps. Pete's in town.
Indiana Jones
Oh my darling, Tangerine
No nose picking
In your dreams
Cry baby songs
Coconuts are cool
Oreos and milk
What a bunch of random names.
I raked my eyes over the CD lists and smiled. They were quite funny. Especially the tangerine one.
I walked over to the closet and swung the doors open to find t-shirts and pants lying messily on the floor of it. I pulled out a t-shirt and a pair of black shorts that were hung. Closing the door and opening the bottom right drawer, I carefully pulled out her underwear with my eyes shut, not to look at them. I don't know, it just felt embarrassing.
I put them into the backpack I had brought with me. Passing the closet, I found some pictures hanging on the wall. With my eyes fully adjusted to the darkness and a little help from the moonlight, I could make out Tiana's cute form from when she was little. Her lopsided smile radiated happiness as a boy about our age had her on his shoulders. His smile seemed so loving, so genuine. It was one of the smiles I had never seen before from anyone close to me.
I walked around the rest of the room, sweeping my fingers against her bed covers as I passed her bed.
With a last look at her room, I climbed out the window and descended down the tree. Mission complete.
Running across the road, I fumbled for my keys and unlocked the front door. With a slight creak, the door opened and I tip-toed into the house. It was quiet as if no one was home at all.
"Where have you been?" I whipped my head to the right where my mother was standing, her arms folded across her chest angrily.
I noticed the coldness in her eyes and immediately knew.
It was one of the bad days.
"Where were you?" she repeated with a knife in her tone, ready to lash out into yells.
"I've been at a party," I replied slowly.
"Parker, it's two A.M. You never go to parties," she said through gritted teeth.
I took a step towards her, trying to calm her down. "It was a party at my best friends house. You know Nate and how he wants me to socialize," I lied.
She raised an eyebrow and her frown ebbed deeper into the sides of her mouth. Her dark circles were pooled around her eyes making her look much more older than her actual age. I felt a pang of sadness as I looked at her, the way I couldn't help her out with work.
"You're lying to me," she spat as I stiffened at her words.
"I'd know your lying face anywhere, you slithering pest," she said accusingly, squinting her eyes into a thin line.
I had gone through this quite a few times before. It usually started with calm cold words which distorted into curses and finally ended up with screaming and throwing things at me. I let her do everything to me, holding onto the thought that she would be better tomorrow.
But today was different. My heart throbbed as she started cursing at me that I was a lier. A lier that didn't tell his own mother the truth. A lier that didn't make her happy.
I was a freaking lier.
For some reason a pained chuckle left my mouth as I looked at her, my own fury bubbling up inside me.
"A liar?" I said in a small low voice, only enough for her to hear. "I wonder who has been lying for years now."
"What the f*ck are you saying, Parker? Are you accusing me of lying? I would never lie to you, you unthankful piece of shit!" she screamed and grabbed my shirt, pulling and hitting my chest with her fists.
I clenched my fists at her lies. "Then what about my twin? Why didn't you tell me I had a f*cking twin?" I yelled.
She stopped abruptly and backed away from me. "You know?" she muttered with her hands on her mouth. "Since when? How?" she gasped.
"Did you meet your father?" she breathed.
"No," I replied immediately.
"Oh, Parker I'm so sorry. I didn't want to keep it from you. I just wanted to keep you safe with me and I didn't want to see you hurt. So I..." I tuned out her voice as she jumbled her excuse while she weeped in my arms. I needed some space. I needed to be alone.
"I know, mom. I understand." I gave her a weak smile.
"You do? Oh, Parker. I love you," she whispered against my chest. "I only need you."
"I do too," I said, holding back the tears as I pulled her off me gently. "I'll be up in my room. You should go to bed. You seem exhausted."
She nodded, and quickly ran to her room. I too, turned to go up the high stairs that seemed like a mountain.
I did not understand. I was a liar, just like my mother had said.
I let my tears fall, knowing that even my mom was fake to me too.
