The Law Of Averages
Since there were only two seats, Parker was forced to sit on Daryl's lap for the rest of the drive, which wasn't a problem. The only problem was how small the front of the truck was. As Rick twisted the keys around his finger and started the engine, Daryl stuck his hand out the window, flipping Jesus off in the process as they drove away.
"So long, you prick!" He shouted, letting his arm hang out the window. "You still got the soda?" She nodded towards her bag on the floor at his feet.
"He wasn't that bad," Parker said once they turned a corner. "He could have killed me, but he didn't."
"Right," Rick simply nodded, looking at Parker as if he had just remembered she was there. "Now that that's sorted out. It's your turn."
"Oh, fantastic." She muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes.
"What the hell were you thinkin'?" Daryl asked her and she groaned, annoyed with the repeated questions. "He coulda killed you."
"Again, I had a gun. Even if he could've, it would have been a stupid idea with you two on our asses." Parker pointed out the obvious. "And everything was fine. I talked to him like a human being instead of jumping him from behind and we actually managed to have a conversation." She waved her hands dramatically. "Ooh, a conversation. A foreign concept for your dumbasses."
"Don't do it again." Rick ended the conversation there.
"I don't know how you plan on stopping me, but whatever you say," She replied sarcastically. "But hey, on the bright side, that whole thing was a blast. I felt like I was in a Fast and Furious movie."
"Well, you ain't," Daryl stated, still angry about it. "You got more than just yourself to be worryin' about."
"Yeah, but am I dead right now?" She countered, checking her pulse. "No? That's what I thought. I'm perfectly fine. And so is the baby." Daryl took a bar of chocolate out of his pocket, unwrapping it before offering a piece to Parker. She ate it straight from his fingers and Rick gagged, acting like a child.
"Do you two mind? Can you not do that right here?"
"What? Eat?" Parker raised an eyebrow at him.
"All that romantic crap," He shuddered. "It's nasty."
"Shut up," Parker shoved his arm. "Now you know how Carl and I feel when you're with Michonne all the time." Rick rolled his eyes. "Honestly, there is so much sexual tension between you. You're like teenagers." Daryl choked on the piece of chocolate he was eating while Rick's face turned beet red.
"Work on your filtration." Rick scolded, shaking his head. "Anyways. Things still worked out. Today still is the day." Daryl handed Rick a piece of chocolate while Parker was distracted by what was outside the window.
"Look at that," She pointed at a barn.
"Yeah, a barn," Daryl sounded confused on why she felt the need to point it out.
"A barn we should go check out," She elaborated and Rick turned in the direction of it. There was a thud on the roof and Rick's face took on a puzzled expression.
"You hear that?"
"Hear wha-" He shushed her and she snapped her mouth closed, waiting for whatever he was talking about. He jerked the truck to the left and the thudding continued. Parker turned down the music, looking up at the roof as she waited for it again. "You don't think..?"
"I think that son of a bitch is on the roof," Daryl muttered angrily.
"Hold on," Rick warned them, giving them a second to grab ahold of something. Daryl wrapped an arm around Parker, hanging onto the (Oh shit) handle above the window. Rick hit the brakes causing a body to roll off the roof, down the windshield, and land on the ground in front of them with a painful groan that could be heard from inside the truck.
"Damn," Parker muttered, slightly impressed. "He really is a persistent bastard." Jesus got up and started running. Rick started driving after him, but Daryl had other plans. He pushed Parker off his lap, jumped out of the truck, and chased after the retreating figure of Jesus. "Got my own seat now." She stated sarcastically as she pulled herself back into the seat. Rick sped up, trying to cut Jesus off but he just skidded to a stop and used the truck as a wall between him and Daryl.
"Hang on to something," Rick ordered, frustrated that he was being outsmarted. He threw the truck into reverse and Jesus took off, Daryl just missing him again and tripping over his own feet. Watching the whole thing unfold from the truck, Parker would have burst out laughing, watching Daryl chase after Jesus and continuously fail, but she didn't dare to when she looked at how angry her brother was. He slammed his hands down on the wheel before stopping the truck and jumping out.
"We came to a conclusion, asshole!" Daryl shouted after him. "I got him!" Parker noticed walkers and groaned. More upset at the fact that they were ruining the whole thing rather than them actually being an actual thing to exist.
"Every damn time," She sighed. Rick stood outside her door, seeing if Daryl was able to handle it on his own before deciding to jump in. Taking care of the walkers so no one died while they were distracted by who got the truck.
"Hey, stay here!" He yelled as he ran off. Parker waited another moment before she started cackling at the scene unfolding in front of her. Watching as Jesus faked Daryl out, and ran in the opposite direction. She turned to look out the window to make sure Rick wasn't having trouble with the walkers when she heard the driver's side door open. Jesus threw himself into the car, frantically searching for the keys. Parker pulled out her knife, holding it against his neck as she smiled down at him.
"Hey there."
"Come here, you little shit!" Daryl spat out as he appeared, trying to wrestle Jesus out of the truck.
"We got bigger problems here. You guys are literal children," She wheezed, scooting closer to the door to give them some space. Jesus grabbed Daryl's gun from his belt and aimed it at his head which is when Parker instantly pulled out her own, clicking off the safety as Daryl's face dropped.
"Duck," Jesus instructed and Daryl quickly dropped down as he fired off a shot, embedding it into the head of a walker that was sneaking up on them. Parker let out a sigh of relief, dropping her own gun. Daryl stood back up, looking back at the dead body at his feet.
"Thanks," He reeled his arm back before punching Jesus in the face. "That's my gun!" When Daryl pulled Jesus out of the truck, he accidentally put the truck into neutral, causing it to roll backward. She tried to get the passenger side door open but it somehow got jammed stuck when Rick slammed it shut before running off.
"Parker! Get out of the truck!" Rick yelled at her when she heard it rolling in water.
"Fucking law of averages my ass!" She muttered as she struggled to climb into the driver's seat. "The hell you think I'm trying to do?!" She yelled at him, she quickly grabbed her and Daryl's bags before jumping out of the truck into waist-high water. Rick and Daryl were both standing at the river's edge, worry etched on their faces before relief washed over them at the sight of her getting out. The truck sank just seconds after and she watched as bubbles floated up before she turned to look back at them, her expression anything but happy. She trudged through the water, ignoring their help as she got back to land, everything from the waist down soaked.
"You alright?" Rick asked turning to Daryl.
"Yeah," Daryl nodded, the two struggling to hold back their laughter as Parker looked between them. She put a hand on her hip which is when she realized her gun was missing.
"Seriously?" She gritted out through clenched teeth. "Hey, Parker, you good after almost sinking with a truck? Oh yeah. I'm just peachy. You both owe me a new gun! I've had that thing since forever."
"You could always get it out of the truck," Rick nodded at the lake.
"I might not have a gun but I'm still pretty good at throwing a knife." She warned him, flipping her knife around in her hand as she stared at him.
"Law of averages. That's bullshit, man. Let's go check them cars and get the hell out of here." Daryl nodded back at the cars the walkers were tied to.
"What about the guy?" Rick looked down at Jesus' unconscious body.
"What about him?" Daryl looked at him confused.
"He helped you," Parker reminded him. "We can't just leave him here for the dead."
"We could," Daryl argued, not liking the idea of helping him.
"He ever pull a weapon on you?" Rick asked Daryl, before pointing at Parker. "Did he do something to hurt her when she was alone with him?"
"Alright, fine." Daryl gave in. "Let's put him up a tree." Parker ran her hand down her face, shaking her head.
"Really?" She mumbled into her hand. "He told me he had people of his own. A camp. We can't just leave him here or in a damn tree."
"Fine," Daryl murmured. "We'll take him with us." They found a working car and Rick and Daryl dragged Jesus into the back seat.
"I'm driving!" Rick instantly announced, hopping into the front seat after they got the car running.
"I call shotgun," Parker claimed and Daryl glared at the two of them as he was forced to sit in the back seat with Jesus. As they headed back to Alexandria, Parker noticed Rick looking at Jesus' unconscious body. He jerked the wheel to the left causing him to fall against Daryl. Daryl pushed him away, staring back at Parker and Rick angrily.
"He took a pretty hard hit. Denise needs look him over." Rick commented.
"Yeah," Daryl muttered, looking out the window.
"You wouldn't have gone through with it," Rick stated knowingly. "You wouldn't have left him."
"I would've. Right up in a tree." Daryl insisted. "I would've."
"Is it sad that I actually believe that he would right now?" Parker glanced at Rick, the two both seeing how clearly pissed off Daryl was with not only having to take Jesus back with them but having to be stuck in the back with him too.
"No," Rick shook his head. "I know. Almost as soon as we got to Alexandria, you got it. You saw.. you... and Michonne, Glenn, and Parker, you all tried to tell me. So shut up." Rick swerved again, snorting in laughter as Daryl harshly shoved Jesus away again. "Cause I'm finally listening." Parker laughed, glad that he was actually listening to them.
"Finally." She smiled at him as she rested her head against the window.
"You tired from swimming in the lake?"
"Shut the fuck up." Parker retorted, closing her eyes. "Wake me up when we get home." They let her sleep until they were back inside the walls of Alexandria, and even then they left her while they took care of Jesus. Daryl came back to look for her after Jesus was locked up and found her still asleep. Smiling to himself, he carefully picked her up and carried her down the street to their house, Michonne let them in when Daryl kicked the door quietly, in some form of knocking. Parker slept all the way to the room, but only when Daryl put her down on the bed did she wake up.
"What?" He asked her when she mumbled something into the pillow.
"Where are you going?" She asked again, her eyes still closed.
"I'm gonna go keep an eye on that guy," He told her quietly. "Get some sleep."
"Don't," She whispered, yawning as she struggled to keep herself awake.
"I'll be back in the morning," Daryl promised, kissing her forehead. "Sleep, alright? I'll see you in the mornin'."
"I love you," She said tiredly, already almost asleep.
"I love you too," He whispered back, leaving the room.
