The Andersons
Daryl went out with Aaron a few days later. They had decided to head out in search of new people once Daryl got his new motorcycle up and working. It was also the same day Parker's morning sickness decided to hit her full force. She spent the morning curled up beside the toilet, upset that she was stuck there while Glenn got to lead a run group. Since Daryl was gone, she was tempted to ask Glenn to let her go, but she felt like she would throw up her breakfast every time she moved. Rick had gotten back later in the day and found Parker lying on the couch, staring at her stomach as she talked to herself.
"You know.. future child of mine, you are kicking mommy's ass, you know that? When you finally get here, I'm making sure you're Dad does most of he dirty work for the first few months. He's out there while I'm stuck here throwing up because of you. I'm sitting here while he's out shooting deer or whatever he's doing." She sighed, running her hand over her face, exhausted. "Do you like real food? Or canned food?" Rick couldn't hold in his laugh at her final question, making it known that he was back.
"You alright?" He asked as he walked into the living room.
"No. I feel like shit," Parker groaned, tilting her head back to look at him. "But other than that. I'm great." She sat up, turning a bit so she was facing him. "What about you? I thought you were busy doing all your new police stuff, Constable Rick Grimes."
"I'm taking a break," He shrugged, walking into the kitchen. Parker sighed, falling back into the couch.
"I swear, this baby is driving me crazy."
"You'll be fine," Rick told her, bringing back two cups of water and handing her one. "Just take it easy."
"I've been taking it easy," Parker retorted, taking the cup from him. "I've been here all morning. Well, here and the bathroom. The toilet has become my closest friend. My morning's been fucking shitty. How are things with you and your new job?"
"The usual," He answered. "Patrolling, keeping an eye on everything." Parker stared at Rick as she rested her head on the back of the couch.
"Do you think we're safe here? Daryl told me how you stole some guns."
"Yeah, he didn't take one," Rick nodded his head a bit. "He said he didn't need it. I'm guessing you had something to do with that." She smiled, taking a long drink of water.
"I'd like to think so. He's struggling here, Rick. This isn't what he's used to." She mumbled, picking at the caked-up dirt under her nails.
"None of us are used to this," Rick replied. "But we'll learn."
"Yeah, we will. Soon we will be normal people again," She said in a random accent, catching the face Rick made and then the two started laughing. "I don't know how we can be normal people again."
"No, it doesn't seem possible after what we've been through," Rick agreed, staring out the window as a blonde-haired woman, Jessie, walked past. Someone that he clearly knew.
"But we'll try," Parker whispered, looking down at her stomach.
"Daryl told me you two were getting closer to picking out names," Rick cleared his throat as he changed his focus back to her. "What do you got so far?"
"Alex for a boy, short for Alexander. Alexander Merle Grimes-Dixon, after his brother. I wasn't a huge fan of Merle, but he turned out to be okay in the end. And then for a girl, Juniper Mae Grimes-Dixon. But we've still got a few that are challenging those."
"I like them," Rick smiled, "Why aren't you sure?"
"Cause, Daryl still wants to name the poor thing 'Little Skull Crusher'." She deadpanned, knowing that whatever she said, he would probably call their baby 'Little Skull Crusher' anyway. "That and.. I guess it just reminds us how everything has changed. We were talking about it last night and-" She was interrupted mid-sentence by a knock on the door. She pushed herself up but Rick put a hand on her shoulder, nudging her back a bit.
"Relax. I'll go see who it is." He opened the door, revealing Jessie's husband, Pete.
"Hey, Rick. Just having a beer. I thought I'd bring you one for helping my wife today." He raised two beers, one in each hand.
"Um... I'm good, but thanks," Rick tried to let him down easily. Talking as politely as he could.
"Come on, don't tell me you're still on duty." Pete chuckled, walking into the house without waiting for an invite.
"Kind of always am, you know?" Rick glanced at his sister from the corner of his eyes.
"Well, not at Deanna's party," Pete argued. "I saw you. You had some, right?" Parker got up from the couch and Pete finally noticed she was there. "Hey."
"Hi," Parker greeted monotonously. "And yes, Rick had something to drink at Deanna's but he doesn't drink when I'm around. Mainly because I can't and it's not fair. None of our group does. It's a respect thing." That was a complete lie. Just the night before she had seen Abraham drink a beer like it was straight-up water. Tara had managed to get her hands on some Tequila to get drunk with Glenn and Maggie. Parker just didn't like Pete's tone or the way he kept looking at Rick, so she took it upon herself to help him out.
"You know, I wish I could have helped out more today," Rick sounded genuine. "I asked around but nobody saw or heard anything."
"Well, it was just an owl," Pete ground out, an obviously fake smile plastered on his face. "Grand scheme of things, I think we'll live."
"Yeah," Rick seemed shocked but still hid it well under a slight smile.
"I'm sorry," Pete apologized suddenly. "I heard you lost your wife." Rick nodded, his jaw tensing, and Parker walked to her brother's side defensively.
"Yeah. We'd rather not talk about it." She narrowed her eyes at him, her tone anything but friendly.
"You know... I'm sure it looks like we haven't lost much, but we have," Pete told the two. "We've lost things. Other things we're just fighting like hell to hold on to. Everything you people have been through, I don't know if you see that."
"We do," Rick stated as Pete took a long swig of beer.
"Bring your kids in for a checkup. I know I offered you one, but they really should come in. They were out there a while, right?"
"Yeah," Rick nodded firmly. "Thanks, Pete." He took a large step towards Rick.
"Let's be friends, man. We kind of have to be, right?" Rick smiled awkwardly.
"Yeah, we do."
"So we will," Pete confirmed, shaking Rick's hand. "I'll see you, Rick. See you around, Parker." When Rick shut the door behind him, Parker shivered.
"That whole conversation gave me the chills. I don't know what's different but, he's starting to make me nervous."
"Me too," Rick mumbled, looking out the window, watching to make sure Pete actually left.
"Let's be friends, man." She put on a deep voice, mocking Pete's words.
"Stop," Rick hit her arm.
"Not to mention the only thing he seems to have lost is a decent hairline." Parker headed to the kitchen, searching the food cabinets. "Do we have any peaches?"
"Peaches?" Rick repeated questioningly.
"Yes, peaches." Parker shot him a look over her shoulder. "It's better than pickles, you know? Cravings, I mean. God, can you imagine craving something that no longer exists?"
"Like what?" Rick leaned on the doorframe.
"I don't know, there's a lot of things," Parker said back. "Sour candy, chocolate.... pizza. Oh my gosh, I miss pizza." She tried to reach for a can of peaches on the top shelf, but Rick grabbed it for her.
"Careful." He warned her.
"Yes, because I'm about to die to a cupboard," Parker muttered sarcastically, taking the peaches. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Rick smirked at her. As Parker was opening the can, Carol barged through the front door looking angry and almost nostalgic. Parker froze, a spoon hanging out of her mouth.
"Carol? You okay?" She asked, stopping what she was doing.
"Pete's hitting Jessie," Carol informed them. "Maybe Sam, too."
"You know this how?" Rick stood up straighter. Parker stared at her with wide eyes, her mouth hanging open. "Did Sam tell you?"
"He didn't have to," Carol shook her head.
"Shit... are you serious?" Parker murmured, still in disbelief. Rick sighed, not wanting to believe her but he also knew that she would never lie about something like that.
"Rick, I know how this is going to go with Pete. There's only one way it can go. You're gonna have to kill him."
"We can't do that." Parker was quick to intervene.
"What else do you propose?" Carol looked to her for an answer.
"I- I don't know, but we don't just kill people!" Parker snapped, shocking herself as she turned to her brother. "Don't tell me you're actually considering this."
"What else can we do?" Rick challenged her. She threw the spoon down on the counter and Carol jumped.
"Something. Anything else. We can't just fucking kill him. Especially without any proof behind the accusation. They're still his family."
"Have you forgotten what Ed did to you?" He whispered angrily, referring to the time he punched her. "What he did to Carol?"
"No, I haven't," She stood her ground. "Of course I haven't. But we have to think about this type of shit carefully. In such a small community, people must know by now. So they're either keeping it quiet or they've already tried to stop it. We've only been here a few days. We don't want them to kick us out. We don't need to kill him, we can make sure he stays away from them."
"How do we do that?" Carol raised another good point. "We live on top of each other."
"I don't know!" Parker yelled, "But whatever you decide.. make sure you can live with the consequences." She looked her brother in the eyes for the last part. "You've done enough, Rick. You don't need to do this too." Then she grabbed the spoon and peaches before she stormed out of the room.
