Taking Things Slow
Carol sobbed for her daughter, and when Daryl helped her up, she turned away and ran from them, not wanting to see her daughter's corpse on the ground. Beth, Hershel's daughter, pushed Rick away and ran towards one of the corpses. When she turned it over, the walker growled and grabbed Bath's hair, causing chaos as they tried to free her and kill it.
Once the danger had passed, Daryl headed towards Parker, who was having trouble concentrating on anything other than Carl, who was clung onto his mom a few feet away. Crouching down next to her, Daryl lifted her chin to look into her eyes.
"You okay?" She took her time to respond, taking a moment to meet his eyes and turn her attention to him.
"Huh?"
"Are you okay?" Daryl repeated. Parker blinked, stuttering as she looked between him and the pile of bodies behind him.
"Yeah, my head just hurts." Daryl turned to Shane, storming over to him, hand around his knife.
"You son of a bitch!" Rick caught Daryl as he lunged at Shane.
"Daryl! Hey! Put the knife down!"
"You did that to her!" Daryl yelled, pointing at Parker. "You knew she had a concussion, so why the hell did you do that?
"I didn't mean to, man," Shane looked suddenly worried. "Is she okay?"
"Does she look okay?" Daryl asked, pointing his knife at Parker, who was still sitting in the dirt with her head in her hands mumbling quietly to herself.
"I'm sorry," Shane apologized.
"Don't go near her again," Daryl snapped. "I'll kill you myself if you do." When he returned to Parker, he helped get her to her feet. She staggered for a second before turning around and vomiting, doubling over as Daryl held her arm gently. As she stood up, Parker's eyes met Daryl's.
"I feel dizzy," Parker muttered. Daryl didn't hesitate to carefully lift her into his arms, carrying her the rest of the way to the RV. When he laid her down on the bed, she immediately tried to sit up, but Daryl pushed her back down.
"No chance in hell, stay there," Daryl instructed. Parker moaned in pain, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"But I'm fine."
"You don't look good, you just threw up," Daryl responded. "Lay down, okay?" Parker didn't have the energy to argue, but when Daryl made a move to leave, she grabbed onto his hand.
"Don't go." Daryl stayed with her until she fell asleep and when she woke up, he was gone. Getting up carefully, Parker found Carol sitting on the couch in the RV, looking out the window. When she saw Parker approaching, she seemed worried.
"Should you be up?" Carol asked, her voice quiet.
"Carol, I'm so sorry about Sophia," Parker instantly apologized. Why? She didn't really know but she just felt like it was the right thing to do. "I'm so sorry."
"It's not your fault," Carol replied. "It's okay."
"No, it's not, I should have kept looking for her. We should have looked harder." Parker rambled out all in one breath. "You didn't deserve it, and if there's anything I can do, let me know."
"Well, you can have something to eat," Carol suggested, pointing to the peaches Glenn received from Maggie a few days ago. "You look pale."
"Thanks. Hey, have you seen Daryl?"
"He's on the other side of the fields," Carol replied. "If you go, be careful. I don't think he's having too much fun."
"Well, that's because I'm not there." Parker winked at her and Carol choked on air. "Kidding! Kidding." She raised her hands in the air.
"Get out," Carol chuckled. Parker nodded, taking her peach before leaving, walking across the field to what looked like the remains of an old building. She saw Daryl sitting against the half-destroyed wall, whittling a stick as she approached. He heard her coming and looked up, narrowing his eyes when he saw her.
"What the hell you doing up?" Daryl asked.
"You left," Parker replied. "And I'm fine. Where is everyone?"
"I don't know," Daryl shrugged, while Parker sat next to him. "You should go back."
"Why are you alone?" Parker ignored his previous comment. "Why are you here?"
"It's peaceful," Daryl said. "Away from all the people."
"Yeah, I understand," Parker heaved a sigh, looking around. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" Daryl asked.
"Carol is worried about you," Parker answered, she wouldn't tell him that she herself was too. "You can tell me if something is bothering you."
"I've never done this before," Daryl said, sounding upset.
"Done what?" Parker asked.
"I don't want to see you hurt," Daryl told her. "And when I saw you hit the ground after Shane pushed you, I was so angry that he hurt you. I've never felt that way with anyone before."
"But I'm okay," Parker gave him a small smile. "It was just a little bump."
"That's not the point," Daryl replied. "My point is that it's just been me and Merle, and then you showed up, and suddenly things have changed."
"Okay, well, technically the world did have a drastic change before you met me." He gave her a pointed look and she cleared her throat. "Things changed... in a good way or a bad way?" Parker asked, before he could answer she talked over him quickly. "Listen, if it's because of the kiss, we don't have to talk about it again."
"It ain't that," Daryl said, putting down his knife and the stick he was holding. "I care about you, and I don't want you to get hurt. I don't want to be the one to hurt you just because I don't know how to deal with these feelings." Parker was surprised, to say the least. She never expected Daryl to be so open, but here he was and she didn't know how to react. Did he basically just tell her that he had feelings for her? Her head may be a little foggy and she may be having difficulty concentrating, but she wasn't stupid.
"We don't have to be anything," Parker said. "If you don't feel comfortable, we don't have to do anything. We can just... take it easy."
"Take it easy?" Daryl asked. "What do you mean?"
"We don't tell anyone," Parker explained a bit, tucking her hair behind her ears. "We give each other a chance to work things out. I've told you before that I care about you, and I don't want to see you hurt either." Daryl looked at her and it was like he was seeing her for the first time again. She was pretty, he would admit that, but it wasn't her looks that attracted him to her. It was the way she made him feel good about himself without even trying, how she saw the good in him. How she treated him like an actual person. How he deserved to be treated. It wasn't natural or normal for Daryl to care about anyone, but he cared about Parker. He looked at her for a second thinking things over in his head.
"Alright." Parker smiled.
"I'm so glad you said that because I still don't feel like telling Rick."
"Why?" Daryl asked.
"Because he's very critical when it comes to guys," Parker answered, chuckling. "When it comes to me anyway. It's just that he's my older brother. I feel like it's in their nature or something." Daryl laughed at that, nodding his head.
"That's what big brothers do." Parker continued to laugh quietly.
"Yeah, I wouldn't change it for the world."
"Have you been with anyone?" Daryl asked. "Before all this?"
"Why, you jealous?" She shimmied her shoulders and he just scoffed.
"Curious."
"A couple of guys," Parker answered with a light shrug. "None of them lasted very long. The longest was nine months. A guy named James. He cheated on me with his ex and I caught them. Rick literally almost shot him when he found out."
"I'm sorry," Daryl mumbled an apology. "You didn't deserve that. Sure would have paid to see the son of a bitch get shot though."
"Welp, unfortunately, things like that happen," Parker slouched her shoulders. "After that, I gave up on dating. No one really... caught my eye. What about you?"
"No one," Daryl replied. "It was always just Merle and me. I didn't have time for anyone else."
"What changed?" Parker asked. "Because from what I saw, I thought it would stay like that."
"I met you," Daryl answered, looking into her eyes. "Listen, I'm not good with emotions or feelings or any of that romantic shit."
"It's okay," Parker assured him. "Me neither." She rested her head on his shoulder. "But we'll figure it out together." Daryl nodded.
"Together." He liked how that sounded. Together.
