Pulled Out From Under Our Feet
While running back through the woods with Glenn and Daryl, they heard a gunshot that sent Parker's heart into her throat. Fear coursed through her when she didn't hear another gunshot, and for a split second, her mind wandered to the possibility that Rick was on the receiving end. Then she felt Daryl's hand pushing her forward, and when the house came into view, Parker had forced her way through the front door.
"Rick and Shane!? Are they back?"
"No," Lori answered, not knowing why she was so panicked.
"We heard a shot," Daryl explained, subtly motioning towards her. "Thinks it was Shane and Rick."
"Maybe they found Randall?" Lori suggested.
"We found him," Daryl responded.
"Is he back in the shed?" Patricia asked.
"He was a walker," Parker responded, breathless.
"Did you find the walker that bit him?" Hershel asked.
"No, the weird thing is he wasn't bit," Glenn explained.
"His neck was broke," Daryl added.
"So he fought back?" Patricia questioned, not understanding what they were telling them.
"The thing is, Shane and Randall's tracks were right on top of each other. And Shane ain't no tracker," Daryl thought out loud. "So he didn't come up behind him. They were together."
"Could you get back out there and find Rick and Shane?" Lori pleaded, fidgeting with the ring she wore on her neck. "And find out what on earth is going on."
"You got it." Daryl nodded.
"Thank you."
"I'm going with you," Parker told him to which he just grunted with a nod. When they went out to the porch, Parker heard the moans of the walkers echoing through the fields. Even in the darkness, it wasn't difficult to see the herd approaching in the distance, hundreds and hundreds of walkers heading toward the farm. "Shit," Parker breathed, as the group joined them outside.
"Patricia, kill the lights," Hershel instructed quietly, seeing the herd.
"I'll get the guns," Andrea said, running inside.
"Maybe they're just passing, like the herd on the highway," Glenn suggested. "Should we just go inside?"
"They wouldn't be here if that gunshot didn't go off. So whoever fired that shot basically just screwed us all over."
"Not unless there's a tunnel downstairs that I don't know about," Daryl replied to Glenn's question. "A herd that size will rip the house down."
"Carls gone," Lori gasped, running out onto the porch.
"What?" Daryl asked, spinning around as Parker's eyes widened.
"He... he was upstairs. I can't find him anymore," Lori responded.
"Maybe he's hiding," Glenn offered up the idea.
"He's supposed to be upstairs," Lori said. "I'm not leaving without my boy."
"We're not," Carol assured. "We're gonna look again. We're.. we're gonna find him." When Carol and Lori ran in to look for Carl again, Andrea returned with the bag of guns. Parker grabbed a shotgun while Maggie grabbed one for herself and Glenn.
"Maggie?" Glenn asked, confused.
"You grow up in the country, you pick up a thing or two," Maggie tossed him the gun.
"I got the number, it's no use," Daryl said.
"You can go if you want," Hershel responded, as he loaded his shotgun with rounds.
"You gonna take 'em all on?" Daryl asked.
"We have guns," Hershel said, readying his shotgun. "We have cars."
"Kill as many as we can," Andrea said from the ground. "Then we use the cars to lead the rest of them off the farm."
"You serious?" Daryl asked, not thinking the plan would work. To be one hundred percent honest Parker didn't either.
"This is my farm," Hershel explained. "I'll die here."
"Alright," Daryl shrugged. "It's as good a night as any."
"Hey," Parker spoke, grabbing Daryl's arm before he could jump the fence. "Be careful."
"I will," Daryl nodded. "You too."
"Sure," Parker nodded back, kissing him on the cheek briefly before taking a step back. "Don't die out there."
"I don't plan on it," Daryl replied, before jumping the fence and jogging away. Parker stayed at the house and went back inside to see if Lori had any luck finding Carl. She could hear Lori running upstairs, watching Beth and Patricia through the window.
"The barn's on fire," Beth gasped from the window.
"They're headed for it," Patricia replied. "Maybe Rick set it to draw 'em in." Lori ran down the stairs.
"I can't find him anywhere."
"So maybe he snuck outside," Carol said, jogging down the stairs after her.
"What do I do?" Lori asked in a panic.
"He was here," Carol told her. "He must have run off maybe looking for Rick or just went after Randall himself."
"Maybe he started the fire," Parker suggested. "Lori, don't worry. We'll find him. I promise you, we will find him."
"Oh my god," Lori gasped, "He's out there." Parker looked out the window too. She was shocked to see a herd of that size. It had to be at least double the size of the highway one.
"There are too many of them. Hershel is going to need help." Parker headed outside, raising her shotgun before firing at the walkers. With each shot, one walker fell, but ten more took its place. Parker knew that this was useless and that they would inevitably have to leave the farm, but as long as they at least held out, no one could blame them for leaving. She could hear Lori yelling for her son.
"Carl!"
"Lori!" Parker shouted. "What's happening?"
"We have to go!" Lori called back.
"But what about Carl?! We can't leave him here!"
"We have to trust!" Lori responded, repeating Carol's words. "Come on, we have to go!" They shouted for Hershel, but he ignored them and continued shooting. Parker turned around and ran to where Beth, Carol, and Patricia were waiting. She led them down the stairs, running ahead of them to clear out the way to the car. The walkers were surrounding the car, so Parker did the only logical thing she could think of, she fired her shotgun and started yelling at the walkers.
"Hey!" Parker shouted, trying to get their attention. "Hey! Over here! Come get me, assholes! Come get me!" Some of them followed her, but Parker saw Patricia being attacked out of the corner of her eye. She continued backing away as the walkers chased her. She had gotten them away from her friends, who were safely in the car when she realized they had cornered her. "Well, shit." Parker panted, shooting at the walkers in rapid succession. Andrea, who was also in the field, spotted a walker that got too close to Parker.
They may not have gotten along, but there was nothing on earth that would make either of them leave the other for dead. People were too scarce nowadays, so Andrea decided to save Parker. When the walker fell, Parker was about to shout 'thanks' to Andrea when she saw the walker behind her. "Andrea! Behind you! Lookout!" Andrea turned and fell to the ground, disappearing under the walker's body. Parker's heart was pounding in her chest when she realized Andrea was gone. There was no way she could get to Andrea because the walkers were clamoring to try and rip her apart while she remained frozen in place.
She only recovered when she heard a growl in her ear, swinging her shotgun and hitting the walker in the head. It fell to the ground, still clawing at her leg, she let out a terrified scream when she saw at least four dozen more walkers coming her way. She kicked at it, her foot eventually just completely going through the head of it. More of them dropped to the ground around her as she shuffled away, tears streaming down her face when she realized she was most likely going to die out there. Alone. She shot a couple more rounds before getting to her feet, looking around her to make sure no more walkers could sneak up on her.
Once again, one forced her to the ground, she let out a frustrated yell, the shotgun getting knocked out of her reach. She had an arm pushing it away as its jaws snapped at her, bloody, slimy gunk dripping onto her face. Her hand wrapped around the knife attached to her belt and she jabbed it into the side of its head. Before she could push it off another climbed onto it, and then another. "Get away from me! I can't- oh god.." She used the body of the dead walker as a shield, swapping the knife into her other hand and stabbing one of the walkers with it. She looked behind her knowing she had only a few more seconds before she was completely screwed. She clawed for the strap of the shotgun, letting out a humorless laugh as she pulled it over and exploded the head of the last walker, its brains covering her face. She pushed them all off before literally running for her life.
After that, she ran. She had no idea if there was anyone else left. If anyone had survived, she knew she had to keep going. If they survived, they were out there, she had to leave the farm. She continued running towards the fence, intending to leave the property, calling for help from anyone who she thought was in the area. "Help!" Parker shouted, a cry catching in her throat. "Someone! Rick?! Daryl?! Glenn! T?" The walkers continued to follow after her and Parker gritted her teeth.
"Come on, I don't got all day!" Daryl shouted, she let out a quiet sigh, sprinting over to him. She climbed onto the motorcycle and wrapped her arms around Daryl's waist.
"Go!" Parker yelled as Daryl revved the engine and drove away, putting as much distance between them and the herd as possible.
"What did I tell you?!" Daryl asked over the roar of his motorcycle. "That didn't sound like you were being careful!"
"The others?!" Parker asked out loud. "Did you see the others?"
"No," Daryl replied. "But we're heading to the highway, where we left those supplies for Sophia. If they're anywhere, that's where they'll be!" Parker looked back at the farm, watching the barn burn and the walkers swarming around, and she felt a tear roll down her cheek. Just when they thought they had stability, it was ripped out from under them like a rug from under their feet. She tightened her arms around Daryl's waist and pressed her cheek against his vest, trying to stifle her sobs as they left the farm with no idea where their friends were. No idea where their family was. And no idea if they'd ever see them again.
