One Kiss

The next morning, Glenn told everyone about the walkers in the barn and no one really knew how to process that. They left breakfast as they headed to the barn to see for themselves, and when they discovered that Glenn was right, Parker could see the anger in Shane's eyes. "You can not tell me you're alright with this," Shane told Rick, walking away from the barn.

"No, I'm not." Rick replied, "But we are guests here. This isn't our land."

"God! This is our lives, man!" Shane snapped.

"Lower your voice!" Glenn hissed.

"We can't just sweep this under the rug," Andrea said.

"Why not?" Parker asked. "We've been here for days and we didn't know anything. That barn seems pretty safe to me, so why is it so important?"

"It's ain't right. Not remotely." Shane said. "We either got to go in there, we make things right. Or we just got to go. Now, we've been talking Fort Benning for a long time."

"We can't go!" Rick stopped him.

"Why, Rick? Why?" Shane asked.

"Because my daughter is still out there," Carol spoke up, saying one of the many reasons why they shouldn't leave. Shane stuttered for a moment, struggling to find the words.

"Okay, I think it's time we all start to just consider the other possibility."

"Shane, we're not leaving Sophia behind." Rick snapped.

"I'm close to finding this girl," Daryl added. "I just found her damn doll two days ago."

"You found her doll, Daryl," Shane spat. "That's what you did. You found a doll."

"You don't know what the hell you're talking about!" Daryl shouted.

"Man, look I'm just saying what needs to be said here!" Shane replied. "Now, you get a lead, it's in the first forty-eight, after that, it doesn't matter."

"Shane! Shane, stop!" Rick intervened, trying to reason with him.

"Let me tell you something else, man," Shane yelled over him. "If she was alive out there and saw you coming, all methed out with your buck knife and geek ears around your neck, she would run in the other direction, man!" Daryl lunged at Shane, but Parker stepped between them as Rick pushed Shane back. Parker grabbed Daryl's arm and no matter how hard he tried to get her off of him, she held on.

"Hey! Stop! Stop!"

"Just stop!"

"I'll kick your ass, man, you come at me again!" Shane shouted, pushing against Rick. "I'll beat your ass, man!"

"Back off!" Rick yelled over everybody, pushing Shane back as everyone fought to keep the two apart.

"Keep your hands off me," Shane warned, pointing at Daryl. When they calmed down, Shane walked away and Rick called after him.

"Now just let me talk to Hershel. Let me figure it out."

"And what are you going to figure out!?" Shane roared, turning back.

"Enough!" Lori shouted, stepping between Rick and Shane.

"If we're gonna stay," Rick said, "If we're gonna clear this barn, I have to talk him into it. This is his land."

"Hershel sees those things in there as people," Dale explained, pointing toward the barn. "Sick people. His wife, his.. his... his stepson.."

"You knew?" Rick asked, sounding betrayed.

"Yesterday. I talked to Hershel." Dale said.

"And you waited the night?" Shane asked.

"I thought we could survive one more night," Dale replied. "We did. I was waiting till this morning to say something, but Glenn wanted to be the one."

"The man is crazy, RIck. If Hershel thinks those things are alive then-"

"Stop it." Rick held his hand up.

"No!" Shane shouted.

"You aren't in charge anymore, Shane! You can think you are but you aren't!" Parker yelled at him, stepping in front of her brother.

"You got something you wanna tell me?" He spat, looking her up and down.

"No, I have something I want to show you." She reeled her fist back before punching him in the jaw making him stumble backwards a bit, his hand going to his face. There was a bunch of struggling as people once again had to separate Shane and now, Parker from fighting each other. Now, the roles were reversed, Daryl was keeping Parker away from trying to hit Shane.

"Come on man! She swung first." Shane chuckled coldly, a sick smile on his face.

"Everyone, enough!" Lori screamed at all of them finally getting everyone to listen. Shane backed off, already leaving.

"Just let me think." Rick tried to dissuade him, but the barn doors started rattling and everyone stopped arguing, watching as the walkers on the other side of the door wanted to get out. After that, everyone left the scene, worried about what might happen if they stayed. Daryl headed to the stables and Parker followed him. She walked in and saw him preparing to saddle the horse to go out looking for Sophia again. No matter how much he tried to hide it, the quiet grunts that left his lips when he strained made it quite clear that he still wasn't completely healed.

"You can't go," She said, walking towards him.

"I'm fine," Daryl responded.

"Hershel said you need to heal," Parker reminded him.

"Yeah.. I don't care," Daryl grunted as he tried to lift the saddle. Parker grabbed his arm.

"Well, I do. Rick's going out later to follow the trail."

"Yeah, well I ain't gonna sit around and do nothing," Daryl kept his back turned to her.

"No, you're going to go out and you're going to hurt yourself more. Or worse. You might not come back this time." Parker crossed her arms, leaning against the wall. "Hell, you almost died last time when you got back here."

"Why do you care?" Daryl asked, approaching her. He was trying to be intimidating. He was trying to scare her into backing away, but Parker had already gotten used to bullies. She knew that the moment you showed a flash of fear, they would never stop, and Daryl was waiting for that little flash, he wanted her to be scared. However, it was not going to happen. Parker clenched her jaw and matched Daryl's gaze with an equally cold one on her face. She gritted her teeth.

"I've told you countless times that I care about you."

"Why?" Daryl asked. "Why do you care about me?" Parker, in response, acted without thinking. She grabbed Daryl's shirt, pulled him towards her, and kissed him. It was brief, just a moment, but when she pulled away, Daryl's eyes were full of surprise and his cheeks were slightly red.

"I don't want to lose you too," Parker whispered. "I don't want you to die out there, because we don't know if we're going to find her." Daryl looked at her, still trying to process the fact that she had just kissed him.

"What?"

"We don't know," Parker said. "Even Carol is starting to accept it. You're no good to anyone if you die out there."

"What do you mean 'you can't lose me too?'" Daryl asked, still trying to figure out what just happened. Parker's eyes filled with tears and the ridiculous posture she was maintaining collapsed.

"Do you remember when I told you about my friends? Before all of this? My best friend. Rachel, she was bitten. I was with her, I saw her die and then she came back and I just left... I left her there. I left her there like one of those things. I don't want that to happen to you. I don't want to see you like that. I don't want you to become one of them."

"I'll be fine," Daryl said. "I know what I'm doing."

"It could happen to you. It could happen to anyone," Parker spoke quietly. "I can't lose anyone else. Please? Dont go. I'm asking you not to go, please." She seemed so sad, like the memories were drowning her in sorrow, Daryl took her hand.

"Come on. I want to show you something." He took her to the lake, pointing out the familiar flowers in the bushes. "You see it?" Parker nodded.

"Yeah."

"We'll find her," Daryl promised. "And I won't die trying."

"Alright," Parker responded, still sounding a little unconvinced. "We'll find her. We will. One way or another," She looked down at her feet. "Hey, um, I'm sorry... you know, for kissing you."

"Don't apologize," Daryl told her.

"It was one of those things you do without thinking and when you do it you think 'Wow, he could literally kill me for this,'" Parker rambled, laughing lightly. "I'm glad you didn't kill me."

"I wouldn't kill you," Daryl assured her. "And I won't let anything else hurt you either." Parker smiled.

"Me neither. I told you, I've got your back, and that means stopping you from doing stupid things." Daryl laughed.

"I guess that applies to me too. For you, I mean."

"I know you said you work better alone, but sometimes it's better with someone else," Parker said with a slight shrug. "But-" Daryl interrupted her by placing a hand on her waist, pulling her towards him. He kissed her softly, and after a second she kissed him back. Daryl had never felt like this before, with anyone, like fireworks were going off in his stomach. Parker wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him close. She smiled at him, leaning her forehead against his. "That's not what I was expecting to happen."

"Well, what do you say?" Daryl whispered. "You and me, a team?" Parker smiled.

"I like that idea."
