Miracles Can Happen
Daryl woke up Parker when they stopped the car, they had finally made it, and parked outside the university. It took her a while to fully wake up, trying to wash off the sleep, and as they headed towards the building that towered above them, Parker reached into her pocket and pulled out a granola bar, offering it to Michonne who walked alongside her.
"How many of those do you have?" Michonne asked, eyeing the one she had in her hand.
"About fifty," Parker replied, shrugging her shoulders. "Me and Glenn found a couple boxes and I've kept them in my bag ever since. Do you want one?" Michonne took it, and Parker handed out granola bars to everyone as they continued their journey.
"Looks like we're gettin' closer," Daryl commented, and Parker risked looking at how far they were, groaning when she saw that they still had ways to go.
"The building we want is up ahead," Tyreese informed them, looking down at the map Hershel had given them.
"God, I hope they have what we need. Or we're pretty much screwed." Parker complained, taking a small drink from her water bottle. Once they had finally arrived, Daryl went first with his crossbow raised. The door creaked when he opened it and Parker tensed, anticipating an avalanche of walkers. They continued pushing forward when nothing happened, heading down one of the hallways and into an empty classroom. Parker walked between the rows of desks, scanning the room for any signs of walkers and Daryl did the same.
"Alright, let's make this quick," Daryl nodded, everyone scattered around the room looking for the supplies on the list. Parker gathered what she could, picking up everything she could find on the list Hershel had given her. She gave the drug end of the list to Bob and Michonne, and instead picked up the other instruments that they would need. It took her a while to find everything she needed, but finally, after searching the classroom cupboards and closets, she managed to find everything. With a full bag on her shoulders, she returned to the group.
"How'd you do?" Bob asked everyone, looking more nervous than usual.
"Bags, tubes, clamps, connectors," Tyreese answered, listing off some of the things he had in his bag. "Everything on the list."
"What about y'all?" Daryl asked, wanting to make sure that they had all the medications that they needed or it was pretty much pointless.
"Yeah, we got it all." Bob nodded, Parker raised an eyebrow of suspicion at how fast he'd answered. Something was off about him, and with how antsy he was being, she could tell something was up.
"Yeah," Michonne confirmed, looking at Parker, "We're good."
"I got all the stuff I could read."
"Alright, let's roll." Daryl had already started towards the door, wanting to make it back to the prison before anyone else died due to the quickly spreading sickness. As they rushed down a hallway, Parker saw Daryl stop and shine his flashlight into one of the rooms. There were a lot of walkers, and when the flashlight caught their attention, Daryl spun around pushing Parker in the other direction.
"Guys, I think we might want to go a different way and there's about thirty reasons why we should!" Parker yelled under her breath, crashing into Michonne who was right behind her when she had stopped. "Sorry." The growls were loud and Parker knew there was more than just that bunch in the building, taking a sharp turn, she almost ran into a door frame as she led them all into an empty, dark classroom, the door slamming against the wall, not fully closing.
"Hey! Doors busted!" Bob yelled and Parker shushed him, looking at the useless door.
"Oh, hold up," Daryl paused, looking around the room for a moment, trying to find a way out. There was a crash and the door flew open, Parker ran at it full force, a few of the walkers' fingers falling by her feet. Clawing at the door could be heard as they all frantically looked around and then Parker saw a sign indicating a flight of stairs.
"Daryl!" She whisper yelled to get his attention, he looked back at her and she nodded her head in the direction of the sign. "That way." Daryl urged them all toward the stairs before giving her the okay to run, and she looked at the door nervously knowing it wouldn't hold before sprinting to the other side of the room. Constantly checking over their shoulders to make sure they weren't being followed, they tried to get to the stairs which had proved to be harder than they thought. The sound of a walker growling caused them all to freeze in their tracks, but Tyreese made quick work of it, letting the corpse fall to the ground as Parker's fingers wrapped around the chain securing the door. She yanked on it angrily when suddenly the doors pushed open against the chain and fingers began to press through the crack between the doors, Parker let out a startled gasp and jumped back
"How many?" Daryl asked, going to her side.
"I can't tell," Michonne responded, hand on her katana handle, ready to kill anything that jumped at them.
"We can take 'em," Tyreese spoke confidently, and Parker looked at him like he was crazy
"Not everyone here has magical abilities to make it out of a walker herd unscathed like you. Now I don't know about you.. but I don't want to die."
"No," Bob stepped away from the door, taking Parker's side. "They're infected. Same as at the prison. We fire at 'em, get their blood on us, breathe it in, we didn't come all this way to get sick." Bob stated and it took him saying that for everyone else to spot the blood stains on their faces, coming out of their eyes, pouring down their chin.
"How do we know the ones in there are any different?" Tyreese asked them, and either way, none of them were too keen on taking their chances.
"We don't," Michonne sighed, taking a second glance at the door.
"Well, it's gotta change sometime," Daryl muttered, thinking back to the conversation he'd had with Parker the night before.
"Daryl, don't-" Parker tried to stop him as he opened the doors, releasing the walkers. Forgetting being quiet, Parker pulled out her gun, shooting down the first two walkers, Bob shooting another while Michonne decapitated two, clearing out the stairs. Parker gave him a dirty look before leading the way up the stairs, her heart pounding in her chest as they reached the second floor, finding the path blocked by more walkers. "A good day," Parker whispered, running her hand over her face. "That's all I ask for."
"Don't have an exit!" Michonne cursed under her breath as she stared at the walkers cutting them off.
"Then we make one," Daryl replied as he caught up.
"Get down!" Tyreese shouted in warning, throwing a fire extinguisher at the window, shattering the glass.
"Welp, we definitely made our own," Parker breathed out, picking a shard of glass out of her arm.
"Come on, move it. Jump down to the walkway down below." Daryl ordered, trying to get everyone out of the college alive. He grabbed Parker's hand, helping her up into the windowsill. "Jump!" Parker jumped, her knees almost buckling as she landed on the roof of the building below, she managed to keep herself on her feet looking up, and giving them a thumbs up. The rest of the group followed after her, and when Bob jumped down, he lost his balance and nearly dropped the bag as he fell towards the edge. When Parker, Michonne, Daryl, and Tyreese tried to help him, he refused to let go.
"Bob, let it go!" Michonne demanded, straining to keep him up.
"Let it go, man. Just let it go." Tyreese told him, holding onto the back of his shirt.
"Let go of the bag, man," Daryl grunted, his feet planted on the edge of the roof.
"Just drop it. Let it go! It's not worth it!" Parker said through clenched teeth as she tried to keep him from being dragged down. As Bob pulled his bag back up, the sound of clinking glass made Parker's eyebrows furrow. She crouched down next to Bob's bag and he was quick to try and keep her away from it.
"That's mine! That's my stuff, don't touch it!" She pushed him back and he fell on his ass, watching helplessly as she searched through it, seeing a half-empty bottle of whiskey and picked it up. Daryl looked at it for a second before his eyes locked onto Bob, ripping the bottle of whiskey out of Parker's hands.
"You got no meds in your bag? Just this?" Bob nodded nervously and Daryl rocked on his feet, staring at the bottle as he tried to keep himself from saying something he'd regret "You should have kept walkin' that day." He ground out, his knuckles white as his grip tightened around the neck of the bottle. When Daryl went to chuck the whiskey, Bob pulled out his gun.
"Don't." He warned, his eyes going between Daryl and the bottle in his hand.
"Hey!" Parker screamed, her gun aimed at Bob's head, clicking the safety off. "I advise you put that gun down or I swear to god I'll blow your damn head off." Her voice was low, but she meant every word she said. She looked at Daryl through the corner of her eye and saw him signal to put the gun down. He stalked towards Bob, getting in his face, so close that their noses were touching, and took the gun from him. Parker sighed, her whole body relaxing, finally allowing herself to lower the gun and turn the safety back on. "Daryl, just leave it." She said quietly, not wanting him to do something that he'd regret later on.
"She's right, man," Tyreese spoke, "The man's made his choice. Nothing you can do about it. Just gotta let it go."
"I didn't want to hurt nobody," Bob stuttered, weakly trying to dignify his actions. "It was just for when it gets quiet." Parker put a hand on Daryl's shoulder, seeming to snap him out of his thoughts, he shoved the bottle into Bob's chest, retreating a few steps.
"You take one sip." Daryl ground out, "Before those meds get in our people, I will beat your ass into the ground. You hear me?" He threatened, a finger aimed at Bob as Parker used herself as a wall between the two. Daryl stormed over to the other end of the roof and Parker went after him, placing a hand on his arm.
"Hey, Daryl, it's okay."
"We have to get out of here," He insisted, looking at the trees before finally turning back to the group, just a tad bit calmer than he was moments ago. When they got back to the car, Daryl sat in the front seat playing with the jasper he had found the day before. Tyreese and Michonne were discussing the best route to get home and realized that their trip would take seven hours. Parker sat in the driver's seat with Daryl next to her, her head resting on the steering wheel. She still felt tired and wasn't sure what was wrong. Maybe she was getting sick, but if that was the case she had just fucked over everyone else in the car.
"We're taking Highway 100," Tyreese told the couple.
"We heard," Daryl grumbled, staring out the window. Michonne climbed into the back of the car and leaned forward.
"You were right, what you said before. About the trail going cold. I don't need to go out anymore."
"Good," Daryl replied bluntly, still rolling the jasper between his fingers.
"I guess I'll drive," Parker massaged her forehead before sitting up straight as Bob and Tyreese climbed into the back seats. When they got back to the prison, they were informed that more people had gotten sick and Glenn was among them.
"Parker, it's Glenn, he got sick." Rick instantly told her as she stopped the car, she pushed open the door in a hurry, and her eyes widened at the news.
"Do you know if he's okay?" She asked her brother, her words just a huge spiel of nonsense, she jumped out of the car and hugged him tightly. "How lo- how long ago?"
"I don't.. I don't know," He mumbled, hugging her back.
"Sasha? How's Sasha?" Tyreese repeated twice, already trying to get to her. Rick apologized for not having any updates on her.
"I don't know, I'm sorry."
"Go on. Get in there, we got this." Before Daryl could even finish his sentence Tyreese was gone. "Parker, c'mon!" She ran over and he threw her a bag and they both made a straight shot to the prison, Rick opened the doors for them. Parker and Daryl sprinted down to cellblock A practically throwing the supplies at Hershel, not caring about covering their faces. Parker ran up the stairs, hearing Maggie crying over Glenn, blood covering his chin, having to be intubated to keep him breathing.
"Is he- is he dead?" She dropped down to her knees beside the two, taking the pump and giving Maggie a break as she helped him breathe. Hershel made his way to them, learning on the cell door. "He's gonna- he'll be okay, right? He's gonna make it through this?" Parker handed it back over to Maggie and stood up wanting to make sure Glenn would be okay. She looked at Hershel with tears in her eyes, wanting to know that Glenn would be fine.
"You probably just saved his life by bringing back that medicine. And everyone else here. But, it's not safe for you to be in here and we can't risk any more people on the council getting sick." She didn't even care about the fact that she was being kicked out, she was just relieved to know that her best friend was going to be alright. She looked back over her shoulder as she left the cell, climbing down the steps, relief washing over her now that she knew things were looking up. When she walked out, she was pulled aside by Rick and he told her that it was Carol who killed Karen and David and he had sent her off on her own so that she wouldn't have to face Tyreese. Once she knew that mostly everything was okay at the prison, besides the fact that Carol was gone- Parker didn't think for a second that she wouldn't return- all she wanted at that very moment was sleep.
She headed to the watchtower, where she knew she wouldn't be interrupted for a while, telling only Rick of her whereabouts in case anyone panicked, before grabbing a blanket and taking a much-needed nap. Daryl found her later up there and they spent the night together in the watchtower. It was nice for both of them to spend some time completely alone because in the cells there was a constant thought of 'Is anyone listening?' So Parker understood why Glenn and Maggie spent so much more time in the watchtower than anyone else. She almost brought up the idea of moving into one but living in the cells meant she was closer to her niece and nephew. As she snuggled into Daryl's arms, her head resting on his chest, she sighed.
"I could stay like this forever."
"Me too," He smiled, kissing the top of her head.
