Forgive And Forget

Parker sat on the porch for the rest of her time there, not trusting herself to not say anything about the Saviors to Carol when Daryl was trying to protect her from it. She didn't bother keeping a lookout for walkers, knowing that the King and his people had made sure to clear the area before they had gotten there. So, she remained lost in her thoughts as she waited for Daryl and Carol to catch up with each other. Her whole body snapped into focus when she heard the cabin door open and she turned around to see Daryl walking out with Carol holding the door open for him.

"Hey," Carol smiled at her which she returned. Parker was happy to see her, but the idea of having to lie to her about the people they'd lost wasn't something she could do. Especially not to her face.

"Hi, Carol," She mumbled as she forced herself up to her feet, using the railing for support.

"C'mon, we're leavin'," Daryl nodded in the direction they'd come from, waiting for her to walk down the stairs. "Watch out for yourself, alright?" He said to Carol after the two shared a hug. Once they were both out of listening distance from the cabin and Carol had shut the door, Parker looked up at him as they walked.

"Why'd you lie?" She asked quietly, wanting to know his exact thought process.

"She don't gotta hear all that shit," He shook his head, not able to look at her as he explained himself. "Hearin' her reasons for leavin'? I couldn't tell her about the fucking Saviors."

"But she deserved to know that Glenn and Abraham died," Parker argued with him. Glenn had been with them since the start. Before Daryl was even there. "She especially deserved to know about Glenn."

"Maybe." He agreed, nodding a bit. "But that doesn't mean she needed to."

"I don't think that's something you get to decide." That's where they left the conversation. That was when they continued their walk in silence back to the Kingdom. Parker had gone back to the room, laying on the bed, half asleep as she stared out the window.  And Daryl had gone off on his own, where? She had no idea. She hadn't bothered to ask him once they had gone their separate ways. Neither of the two having any words to say to the other.

"We're going back," Daryl said as he walked into the room, the door closing behind him. She looked over her shoulder with a confused look on her face as she waited for him to elaborate.

"Back where?"

"Back to Hilltop. In the mornin'." The next morning, before the sun was even fully up in the sky, he'd woken her up, telling her to get her stuff. Her half-awake body shuffled around blindly as she gathered her gear from her backpack which she tossed over her shoulder when she was finished.

"So, what? We're just leaving now, too?" She asked, attempting to match his pace as he walked down the stairs.

"Yeah, we gotta go home." He nodded, sparing a glance over her shoulder to make sure she was behind him, not bothering to slow down.

"Fucking hell.." She mumbled to herself, just reaching the bottom of the stairs as he waited for her at the door. "I'm over seven and a half months pregnant. Give me a break," She muttered, slightly annoyed as she moved past him. They didn't say anything to any of the people who asked questions, curious to know where the pair of them were off to. All they did was take determined steps up to the front gate, preparing for a long trip back to Hilltop. On foot.  Upon arriving at Hilltop, Maggie greeted them at the doors. Daryl held back a warm greeting, but Parker wrapped her arms around Maggie in a tight hug. "Leadership suits you," Parker said quietly into her shoulder.

"I'm not a leader," Maggie brushed off the compliment.

"That's not what I heard," Parker smiled at her as she pulled out of the hug. "Is it okay if we stay here?"

"Of course," Maggie replied. "There's not much room, though."

"Well, we're used to sleeping outdoors," Parker assured her that literally anything was fine. "The outdoors and the stars, what more could you ask for?" Maggie laughed as she spun in a small circle.

"How are the babies holdin' up?"

"They're okay," Parker nodded in response. "We finally have names for the both of them."

"Do I get to know them?" Maggie asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Eh... you're gonna have to wait. Just like everyone else," Parker's smile grew before pointing to Maggie's stomach. "How's your little one?"

"It's okay," Maggie smiled back as she put a hand over her stomach. "We're all okay."

"I didn't... I didn't get a chance to see him the last time I was here," Parker said, her voice strained. "Where is he?" Maggie showed her the place where Glenn and Abraham's bodies were buried and left her alone. Parker walked slowly between the graves and lowered herself to the ground. Crossing her legs under her, she rested her hand on the mound of dirt that covered her friend's body, trying to hide the tears in her eyes. "Hi, Glenn," Parker whispered, swallowing around the lump in her throat. "I'm sorry it took me so long to come visit you. I feel stupid, talking to you. Because there's nothing I can say that will ever come close to being enough. I miss you. You were there for me since the very beginning. It had been you and me. I'm sorry this happened to you. You didn't deserve this, and I wish it could have been me. So you could be here right now, with Maggie, getting ready to bring your baby into the world... There are so many things that I wish I had told you. 'Thank you' seems to be the most common thing. Thank you for... everything, really. For teaching me how to navigate the new world, for never letting me do anything too stupid, for always being there for me when I did stupid things. You were.. you were my best friend, you still are, and you will always be my best friend in this lifetime or the next. I miss you. I always will miss you." Parker's fingers brushed the necklace she always wore, her gift from Glenn. "I will never forget you. I hope you can rest easy, knowing that we are going to win this and we are going to survive, and after that, we will live. All those memories that I have, all those stupid things that we did, will stay with me forever. I will never forget you. I love you, Glenn. I always will." She felt a hand on her shoulder which shook her slightly, turning to see Daryl standing behind her. She wiped the tears off her face, clearing her throat to try and get her voice to sound remotely more normal. "Uh... how long have you been there?"

"Long enough," Daryl mumbled, looking down at her and the grave she sat at. "Are you okay?" Parker shrugged, fighting back tears as she stared at what remained of Glenn.

"I'm glad I can finally say something to him, you know?" Daryl nodded and helped Parker to her feet.

"I know you miss him."

"I do," Parker agreed quietly. "He was my best friend since the beginning. Before you, and before Rick came back, I had Glenn. I miss him more than anything." Daryl pulled Parker into his arms, keeping her close.

"I miss him too." Parker and Daryl spent a few days at Hilltop, helping Maggie orchestrate a plan to retaliate against the Saviors. Parker visited Dr. Carson several times, just for regular checkups and an ultrasound. It had been a while since the last one, so seeing her baby on the screen again.. it filled her with relief. She was grateful that her baby was still growing despite everything that had changed. Daryl sat next to her when she visited the doctor, and she held his hand while Carson applied the gel to her stomach. When Daryl saw his son and daughter, some of the clouds in his eyes cleared for a moment, revealing the happiness Parker loved to see on his face.

After the doctor's appointment, Parker and Daryl sat together on one of the benches. Since arriving, Daryl hadn't spoken to Maggie, much less looked at her, and was doing everything he could to avoid her. Parker knew that he still felt guilty about Glenn's death, which was why he was distancing himself from Maggie. While Daryl sat on the picnic table making new arrows, Parker held a book in her hands. Carson had offered it to her because it was about pregnancy and what came after giving birth. Every now and then, Daryl would see Parker's face contort with disgust at something she had read, followed by a comment.

"Ugh! That is actually disgusting. Did you know that some people eat their placentas?"

"What the hell is a placenta?" Daryl asked, his eyebrows pinched together in confusion.

"It's what grows in the uterus and connects to the umbilical cord," Parker explained briefly. "And after the baby is born, that also comes out, and... it doesn't sound very good."

"People like that?" Daryl asked with disgust evident in his voice and written all over his face.

"Well, these ones sure did," Parker muttered in disbelief, showing him the images. "Proteins and stuff. What do you say? Do you want some slow-cooked placenta after the babies are born?"

"Hell no," Daryl replied, pushing the book away from him.

"I bet you wouldn't even know if I served it to you and told you it was a possum," Parker laughed at the look he shot her way. "But don't worry, it sounds disgusting. Not even I am that evil."

"Go back to your book," Daryl laughed, shaking his head.

"Giving birth is gonna hurt like a bitch," Parker snapped the book closed, stretching her arms above her head. "Is it too late to turn back?"

"Yeah," Dary answered. It was too late about seven and a half months ago." A clanging noise made their heads snap up, and they turned toward the door. Kal was attentive and turned toward the Hilltop residents, warning them of incoming visitors.

"The Saviors are coming!" Parker's blood ran cold as she dropped the book on the table and reached for the gun she'd been keeping on her.

"We have to hide." Enid ran towards them, grabbing Parker's hand and helping her off the table. "And we need to go find Maggie."

"Where is she?" Daryl asked, hurriedly grabbing his knife which he had stabbed into the table.

"Come on," Enid said, leading the way.

"Parker," Daryl said, grabbing his wife's hand as they followed Enid.

"Maggie!" Parker waved her over as Maggie ran around like a headless chicken not knowing what she was doing.

"We have to get to the tunnel," Enid started pulling them all in the direction of some tunnel that only she and Maggie knew about.

"We'll never make it in time," Maggie refused, tugging in the opposite direction.

"Well, someone needs to make up their damn mind. I don't have the energy to play four corners right now," Parker breathed heavily, already out of breath from the short amount of running they've already done.

"Come on!" Enid said, and they ran around the side of the house just as the Saviors came through the doors. A cellar attached to Barrington House was the hiding place that Enid chose for them, opening the doors. "Just stay down there. I'll keep them away. They aren't the same ones who came to Alexandria." Daryl followed Maggie down the stairs to the cellar and turned to make sure Parker didn't fall as she slowly made her way down the same steps. When the three of them hid and the doors closed, Parker looked at Maggie through the darkness.

"What tunnel is Enid talking about?"

"We made an escape route," Maggie answered her question as she looked around for something. "Just in case."

"But it didn't work because we couldn't get there," Parker let her hands fall to her sides as she let out an exhausted laugh. "Typical."

"Help me move this shelf," Maggie whispered, pointing to a storage shelf. "There's a space behind here where we can hide if they come in for some reason." Parker looked down at her nearly eight-month-pregnant stomach.

"There's no way that can happen. I'm a literal beached whale, Maggie."

"Trust me, you will," Maggie nodded, struggling to move the shelf herself. They began to push the shelf out of the way, opening a space behind it that was dark enough to hide them from anyone stumbling into the cellar. Daryl stood by the door, knife raised in case anyone tried to break in. "Daryl," Maggie called to him quietly, receiving no response. "Daryl.. Daryl!"

"Daryl!" Parker hissed. Daryl moved at the sound of her voice, hiding behind the shelf and helping Maggie and her put it in place. When the shelf was back in place, Parker crouched down and rested her hand on her stomach. Maggie was behind her and Daryl was in front of them, knife held in his hand defensively. There was silence for a moment, and then the cellar doors opened. A Savior entered looking around. His eyes fell on a basket of apples, picking one up before taking the entire basket. Then he turned to look around for anything else that he thought was worth taking. Daryl moved as if he was going to kill the Savior, but Maggie managed to grab his arm and stop him. Silently, she shook her head, trying to tell him to leave it. Parker grabbed the back of Daryl's shirt to stop him from attacking the man. The Savior left, closing the doors to the cellar behind him and Daryl ran to the door to check if he was really gone. Maggie sighed a breath of relief.

"You were going to kill that guy," Maggie ground out, slightly upset with him.

"He was gonna find us," Daryl replied, not bothering to look at her.

"He wasn't. And he didn't."

"He deserved to die," Daryl ground out in response, keeping his back to her the entire time.

"Ever since you got here, you haven't said a word to me," Maggie started, still trying to catch her breath for how long all of them had to hold it. "Would you look at me? Please?" Daryl turned to Maggie, who sighed. "Daryl..."

"I'm sorry," Daryl whispered, his voice breaking. "I'm sorry."

"It wasn't your fault," Maggie said quietly.

"It was."

"No," Maggie disagreed, not wanting him to blame himself. "It wasn't. You're one of the good things in this world. That's what Glenn thought. And he would know, 'cause he was one of the good things, too. And, uh... I wanted to kill that guy too. I wanted to string them all up and watch them die. But we have to win." Maggie approached Daryl and hugged him. "Help me win."

"We will," Parker said for the both of them as she placed a hand on Daryl's shoulder, a tearful smile on her face.
