Writer's POV
"Are you Rohan Sarthak... from K.V?" Tanvi asked him, hoping she would hear the answer she wanted. Only she knew how fast her heart was throbbing right at this moment.
Even Sarthak felt more composed than before. Did she get to know who he was? What would she do after getting to know my answer? Heck, what should he answer to her? Say her the truth or not? More and more questions were popping up in his mind. He was not sure if she would run away from him or she would say sorry. He didn't want to think about any of those options. He was so damn confused about his own feelings and what he wanted from her. Though he kept on saying that he didn't like her presence near him, he felt a strange connection that pulled him towards her.
Finally after a moment of silence he said, "Who is he?"
He wanted to know what answer she had to give him. Would she tell the truth or would she throw the blame on him? Was she going to lie? He waited for her response while she didn't understand what to answer.
Should she tell him? But she restrained herself from confessing the truth, because, for her, he was a stranger, and he already didn't like her. If he got to know the truth about her past, he would despise her more, and she surely didn't want any rift with anyone here.
"Well... Someone I know," she mumbled and turned her face away.
'As I expected' Sarthak smirked internally. She surely didn't want to accept her mistake, so she was not telling anyone, he thought and saw her turning away. Her words and his own imaginations about her made him think very wildly and evilly.
"If you know that person then, why are you asking who I am?" he asked her in a stern voice with serious expression. He caught her off guard and saw her shocked expression and said inwardly, 'Wait, dear Tan. There is more.'
She on the other side, felt an electric jolt through her body. She didn't expect him to question her back. Well, whom else to blame apart from herself for asking someone about themselves?
She breathed in and said, "Well, I know him.... but I thought.... Ajay calls you R.S, right? So I thought R means Rohan and S for Sarthak. And was thinking whether you studied in KV."
'Clever as ever' Sarthak thought and chuckled slowly, but he had no intention to stop there and went on, "So, you will assume what you feel like and ask whatever you want? You will never think about the other person, right?"
As soon as he raised his voice, she was frightened. Why did he always have to shout at me? She looked at him, who was glaring at her, almost as if he wished to strangle her, but definitely not to death.
"No I didn't mean like that Sarthak..." before Tanvi could complete the sentence he broke her off, "Why are you being informal with me? I clearly mentioned you that day to give me respect and see now. I guess you are taking me as if I am an idiotic jerk, right?"
Tanvi's face fell. She didn't expect this sudden blow. He was ok with me all this morning, but what happened now? Why was he behaving like all of a sudden? she thought. She just couldn't understand Sarthak. She noticed that he was still glaring at her without even blinking.
Before she could reply, Ajay came in. She internally thanked Ajay for saving her at the right time.
"Bad news, guys," said Ajay and captured both of their attention.
Sarthak finally turned his head to look at Ajay, who sighed deeply and continued.
"Well, the event coordinators called me to inform me that we have stay overnight and develop the app. Like some teams have complained about the time duration, so they have changed it into an overnight Hackathon. So, all the qualifying teams must stay here and develop the app till next day afternoon."
Ajay finally breathed in after such big explanation while both Tanvi's and Sarthak's breath got hitched. Before they could react, they heard a loud, "What?" from the opposite side. It was Jiya who came back after talking to her friend. She overheard their conversation, and she was excited about the overnight stay in a college. Now she wished she was a part of their team.
"Well..." Ajay was about to start explaining again, but was cut off by Tanvi.
"So, you are saying we have to stay here the whole night if we want to continue in the contest?" She tried her best not to sound frightened. Well, she wouldn't mind an overnight in college, with Ajay and other reasons either. Her only problem was the person beside her. Sarthak. Two minutes ago, she hoped to go to the hostel and be free from this person, but now she couldn't even do that.
Ajay nodded his head, "Why Tanvi? Do you have any problem?". For him this was the best opportunity to spend time with Tanvi. All day long, she was talking with him only. Thanks to Sarthak's introverted nature, he got all his space with Tanvi. He felt something was wrong between Tanvi and Sarthak as they kept staring at each other when he introduced them. But he didn't bother much about it.
"NO," Both Sarthak and Tanvi said at the same time with different intentions and different tones of voice. Tanvi had mumbled no as a mere whisper, while Sarthak shouted in his usual tone. For him, it had become too much to handle. Even these few hours with her were hell anguishing for him. He was waiting for the time to end so that he could run away so fast that there would be no need to see her again, but it seemed like fate and time were playing with him.
"Why? What happened now, R.S?" Ajay asked in annoyance. He knew Sarthak, was adamant and if he takes upon something he will stick to it, but today, he was saying something and doing the exact opposite of that. At one moment, he would be ok, and the very next minute, he would get very angry, as though he was bipolar.
Sarthak understood that his behaviour was causing everyone annoyed. He noticed Tanvi staring at him worriedly, while her friend Jiya is looking at him suspiciously. Then he again faced Ajay, who was looking at him, perplexed.
"R.S listen it's one time opportunity of all of us and...." before Ajay could complete his point, Sarthak waved his hand to stop him. "Fine. I get it. Let's return then. We have a long way to go again."
And he started to walk back, leaving them at their places.
Ajay looked at Tanvi and asked her to join. Tanvi nodded her head and turned to Jiya to bid her adieu.
"Is he crazy?" Jiya asked Tanvi as she hugged her. Tanvi smiled, while Ajay chuckled as he heard what she said.
"You can consider him Half crazy Jiya," he said and laughed out. Jiya finally left the place and promised to come soon the next day morning. And both Ajay and Tanvi reached the hall again.
This Sarthak, took the middle seat before they could arive, and with no option left Ajay and Tanvi sat on his either sides. Ajay asked Sarthak to switch seats, but Sarthak didn't even pay attention to his pleas.
"So, our app idea is fixed, right? The one Sarthak suggested," asked Ajay.
"Yeah. I have no problem," Tanvi mumbled as she knew she had no other option, and she didn't want to create any problem with Sarthak. Ever since she met him, he had been giving her creepy vibes, so she was being extra careful with her words and actions, trying not to trigger him.
Ajay smiled at her, which didn't go unnoticed by Sarthak. He gave him the best glare, but Ajay didn't noticed it.
"If you are done with your blushing, shall we continue?" Sarthak snapped and looked at both of them. Tanvi looked at him shocked while Ajay smiled sheepishly to Tanvi, but his eyes cursed Sarthak a lot.
"So, we have 20 minutes. We have to discuss and sort out all the features, logo, and other details," said Tanvi and looked at both of them, only to find them staring at her seriously.
"Ok?" she said and waved her hands infront of their faces. They were both immersed in gazing at her face as she spoke so seriously and elegantly. Sarthak was aware of her speaking skills as he still remembered her farewell day speech where the whole crowd cheered her, but he came out of his thought and gave her a cold expression.
"Are you this team's leader? You are behaving and ordering like one," Sarthak said and chuckled. Tanvi was again taken aback. She didn't have any such intention of ordering others. She only wanted to share her opinion but again he is taking everything in a wrong way.
"No, I didn't mean it in that way. I just want to express my opinion as we are a team, and even you can share your ideas," she said, trying to explain herself.
She glanced at Ajay, who was seemingly shocked at Sarthak's words. He had never seen Sarthak resent any person in his life. Well, he never bothered about anyone in his life apart from his family and Ajay, but seeing him like this was bothering him.
"Yeah. What have you done until now that you want to express your opinions. Even in the first round, you weren't of any help, and now you want to give your suggestions for us to win the first place," Sarthak spat out hateful words and glowered at her angrily.
This time, Tanvi didn't find any words to speak up. She never received such harsh treatment from anyone, and he was taunting her like a waste person.
Ajay intervened and stopped Sarthak. "R.S stop it. There is limit, ok? Why are talking to her like that? Even you know she helped you a lot. If you want to blame someone for not doing anything, then blame me. Since ECE students can also participate, I am with you even when I am of no use. So, stop being so harsh on her for no reason."
Ajay literally shouted on Sarthak. He couldn't control himself when he saw her eyes turning moist and her cheeks and nose tinting red. Even Sarthak calmed down when he saw she was hurt. For a moment, he felt like he was possessed by someone and uttered all those words, but now, when he saw her like that, it pained his heart a lot.
Tanvi stayed mum all the while. She didn't look at them and kept her eyes fixated on the ground, trying hard not show her emotions. She remembered how she used to be a year and a half ago. Had anyone tried crossing paths with her then, she would have given them a nice, befitting reply, shutting them up, but she had lost all her confidence and attitude after that incident. She felt like her words had created problems for her, and since then, she had always maintained her composure with the intention of not hurting anyone. But now, even when she is not at fault, she was receiving such harsh treatment.
Ajay left his chair and reached to her side, "Hey, Tanvi. Don't take his words seriously. He is always like this. A bipolar. Don't cry," he paused as she didn't react much. Then he tried his other trick and said, "Don't cry, dear, it's too difficult to take my eyes off you."
Tanvi smiled and looked at him. "I am not crying, Ajay. I am not such an emotional fool to cry over everything. I just..... I just thought maybe I am really of no help to you guys," she said and again lowered her head.
"Not at all, Tanvi. We reached till here, and the credit goes to you too. Don't think like that," he said and turned towards Sarthak and said, "Apologize to her, man."
Sarthak was not listening to anything. He kept staring at Tanvi with a blank face. Only one thought was running in his mind 'Was I too rude?' Though that was the intention why he joined the team, now he was feeling terrible. Terrible for himself too.
Before he could say something, Tanvi said, "No need to say sorry. It's ok," she said this with a stern face as though she couldn't care about his apologies.
Ajay didn't force Sarthak after that and went back to his place. This time, Ajay started the conversation and gathered all the ideas and opinions. Though both Tanvi and Sarthak appeared space cadets, he tried his best to cheer both of them.
"Ok let's use Angular typescript and .Net core. Sarthak and Tanvi, you work on user interface, and I will do the back end, and please don't fight. You both have more knowledge about it then me, so please work together," Ajay said to which Tanvi smiled at him awkwardly, not having other option while Sarthak didn't respond to him, he just looked at him and turned away.
Finally, the event commenced, and all the teams started working vigorously. That was the only time Sarthak and Tanvi were together peacefully. They worked together, and if they did run into a problem, they asked each other before going back to their respective work. Luckily, they got more computers this time as other teams had left the event.
After working at a stretch for four and half hours, Ajay stopped for a while and said, "Guys, let's take a break. Let's eat the dinner, and then we can get back to work,"
Saying this he stood up from his chair and waited for them to respond. Even Tanvi was exhausted so she stood up too., but Sarthak didn't respond. He was too much involved in the work and replied, "You go ahead if you want. I will join later."
Both looked at him, and Ajay tried to convince him, but he didn't even budge. So, finally, they left to have some food. When Sarthak felt that he was alone, he stopped working and looked in the direction they went.
'They left', he thought. Maybe somewhere, he expected them to force him or stay with him. Even though Ajay did that, he did expect something from the other person.
'Who will think about you after you hurt that person so much?' , he thought to himself and went to the restroom to wash his face so that he wouldn't fall asleep soon. When he came back to the place, he saw something which he had never imagine in his life.
Tanvi was waiting there with a plate full of food. When she saw him, she placed the plate in his chair and kept staring at him. He reached the spot and stood before her.
"Since it was late, I bought the food for you. It's already cold. Eat fast," she said as he kept looking at her.
"Ohh, you are here," Ajay said from the back. "She brought the food here only. Eat here and listen. It's already 10. So, we will work in time slots. I mean, we will work together until one feels tired and let that person take some rest, and after some time, the other one will sleep. It's not so easy to keep on working whole night. What say?"
Tanvi nodded and even yawned at the same time, for which Ajay teased her while Sarthak smiled at her. Then he started eating the food while the other two worked together. Even though he didn't like the proximity between Tanvi and Ajay, he liked watching her while she worked. She was free with Ajay and was smiling with him while talking. Yet again, Sarthak was becoming weak seeing her alluring smile.
They continued working together for four more hours after Sarthak finished his dinner. Soon, Ajay was knocked out, and he slept, leaning back on the chair. Only Tanvi and Sarthak were left alone, but both didn't dare to talk with one another. They just continued working as the other teams.
After another two hours, Tanvi, too started to feel sleepy. She yawned and was unable to think properly because of the extreme stress and tiredness she was experiencing.
Sarthak observed her discomfort, but didn't say anything to her. After talking utter nonsense to her before the start of the fest, he didn't speak to her again.
He eyes went back to the screen, continuing with his work. Suddenly, he felt a weight on his left shoulder. His breath hitched for a moment, and he stopped typing. He looked down at that side and found Tanvi resting her head on his shoulder.
She felt so tired, and finally, her mind gave up. She didn't care who was sitting beside her or anything around. She just wanted to rest and laid on something soft.
Sarthak didn't understand what to do. Should he wake her up or should he let her sleep? Should he give her more comfortable position to sleep or should he scoot more closer to her? What should I do?
Many thoughts were running in his mind, but all of it lay broken when someone moved Tanvi's head from her shoulder. For a minute, he thought of smacking that person's head, but to his dismay, it was none other then Ajay.
Ajay slowly held her head and placed it on the bench before, to which Tanvi remained unaware. Sarthak gritted his teeth and glared at Ajay. Ajay turned to his direction and said, " Let her sleep properly. I will help you."
'Bastard!' Sarthak cursed him. Did you ask me whether I want to sleep or not? He thought, but he didn't say anything and continued working. From within, he was burning with severe anger.
He kept on working without any knowledge of time. Then, Tanvi woke up and stretched her arms out, because of which. her hands accidently hit Sarthak's face. She immediately became aware of the surroundings and apologized to him. He didn't bother much as it helped him in losing his drowsiness and the feel of her soft hand made him feel many sensations. He didn't said anything, just handed over the work to her and took rest for a while.
Finally, they finished off their project and explained it to the mentors present there. They named it 'Who's it?'. At last, by 1 in the afternoon, they stepped out of the hall. Every person in all teams where hell exhausted. All of them just wanted to lie on their beds and want to go into a deep sleep. But all of them waiting for the fest to get completed.
Soon, after having lunch, all the three went to cheer for Jiya, who was one of the top 5 finalists. Though Sarthak was least interested, he accompanied them, but joined them cause only some time is left for the event to close down.
Finally, all the programs came to an end, and it was time for results. In the meantime, Jiya joined the trio, and both girls chatted a lot forgetting the surroundings. Soon, after some speeches from important people, they announced the top three winners in all events.
"So, the winner in solo dance competition is Ms. Jiya," announced one anchor.
As soon as they announced this, Tanvi and Jiya both shouted in excitement and happiness. Tanvi no longer felt any tiredness, and seeing her friend win the competition, that too landing the first place, made her feel even more energetic, and at the same time, she was nervous about their results.
"Don't worry. We will win," assured Ajay. Tanvi nodded her head and awaited for their round results as Jiya went up on the stage and received her trophy and prize money of 25k.
"So the third and final winner in the technical event team is, team 23. Join your hands and welcome Tanvi, Ajay and Sarthak. Congratulations," the anchor voice boomed all over making all the three jump with happiness.
They had lost their hope when their names were not announced in the first two spots. But as soon as they heard their team number, the lost hope came back and are jumping with joy.
Ajay jumped on Sarthak while Tanvi and Jiya hugged each other too. Ajay thought of hugging Tanvi too, but instead, she only gave him a hi-five and wished him. Sarthak hoped she would do the same with him, but she turned away and went to the stage along with Ajay.
Sarthak felt left out, but he, too, went up and received their trophy and prize money of 10k.
The event continued for some more time, but everyone started leaving the college. Especially the participants in all events as they were hell tired of everything.
As they were leaving, Sarthak kept observing Tanvi's behaviour. She kept ignoring him, while clicking many selfies with Ajay, but he was standing next to him, and none cared about him. Not even Ajay.
Again the negativity started occupying his mind. This ignorance was hurting him as it did a year and a half ago. Now she is behaving like this again, he thought.
Like this, his ego won over his mind and heart. His face again turned cold and his tiredness contributed to all of it.
" I am leaving if everything's done. Bye," he said coldly and started walking away.
Ajay thought maybe he must be exhausted, so he bid goodbye to both Tanvi and Jiya and joined Sarthak. Though he wished to spend more time with Tanvi, he didn't want to make Sarthak more angry. Fortunately, he took her number with the hope of being in touch.
Finally, Tanvi and Jiya returned to their hostels. She immediately fell on her bed and recalled her whole fest days. It was indeed an incredible experience with both sweet and bitter memories, especially with Sarthak.
She even feared to ask him for selfies, unsure about how he would react again, and she was sure enough to know he wouldn't like coming close to her. That was why she didn't ask him. Still, he left everyone behind because of his arrogant nature.
Hope I will never cross paths with him again, thought Tanvi and finally let sleep consume her.
So how is the chapter friends?
I am really nervous about this one chapter friends.
Hope you will like it.
