Chapter 29

So thank you all for finishing the target, and sorry that I couldn't update yesterday itself. Got busy with college work and editing this big chapter.

So a special thanks to my friend mikywaymidnight for her help in writing about engineering fests. Since I am not from Engineering background, she helped me writing about the fest.

Now coming to the next target how about 20 votes and 5 reviews???

Let's see. Enjoy.

Writer's POV:

They stood facing one another for a moment. For Tanvi, it was a combination of shock and nervousness, while for Sarthak( from now I will mention him as Sarthak only, hope that doesn't confuse you anyone) there was only resentment. Once upon a time when, he wanted to go as close as possible towards her, but now he wanted to run as far as possible from her.

Finally, Ajay brought both of them out of their trance, breaking the intense eye lock, which people used to hold in movies from 90s. As soon as Ajay came in between Tanvi and Sarthak, she came out of the dead lock and smiled to both of them.

"Have you known each other before only?" Ajay asked both as Sarthak was still looking at her.

"Well, we met once," said Tanvi, remembering that fatal encounter they had.

'Once? We met Onc?' Sarthak scoffed in his own mind. Again he was drowning back to their past, and the memories are flashing in front of him.

"Ohh! That's great, then. So R.S, she is Tanvi, and Tanvi he is my best and only friend..." before Ajay could tell his name, Sarthak cut him off saying, "I am not teaming with her."

It took a minute for both Ajay and Tanvi to register what he just said, and before they could respond, Sarthak turned around and left the place. Ajay immediately followed his back and stopped him by holding his shirt's collar from behind.

Sarthak stumbled by this sudden movement but regained his balance soon enough. He turned around and was angry with Ajay's stupidity. "What?"

Tanvi thought of going after them but didn't, as she was sure now that this strange person would not team up with her. Why was he behaving like this with me? she thought.

"R.S just few minutes ago, you agreed to work with a girl. I told you everything in detail. Now, what's wrong. Why are you leaving?" Ajay asked in exasperation. He was unable to understand what changed his friend's mind within a fraction of second.

Sarthak sighed audibly. He didn't know why, but he didn't want to tell who Tanvi is to Ajay. Actually, he didn't want to talk about her with anyone, but if they were to become a team, he would have to talk to her, which he hates to do.

"I don't want to join now. Not with a girl,"

"But you are ok with it, right? I told you..." as Ajay was about to explain everything, Sarthak stopped him and said, "I know you told me, but I am not interested. That's it." And he looked away.

Ajay fell silent as he heard his friend's words. He understood that Sarthak was serious about his decision, so he chuckled bitterly and said, "Great. Ok then, Rohan Sarthak. You go. I will be with her."

Sarthak immediately glimpsed back at Ajay. He was hell angry now for two reasons. One, Ajay addressed him with the name which he had forgotten long ago. After he told to his father to not to call him as Rohan ever again, he didn't introduce himself as Rohan in front of anyone. He never responded when Ajay called him like that. Hence Ajay always calls him R.S, though he was used to calling him Rohan since childhood. Now, after a long time hearing his full name caused him to remember some memories.

Secondly, his best friend was leaving him for a girl who broke him and betrayed him. He wanted to yell at him and say who Tanvi was to him, but somewhere he was unable to let it out. He is nervous about the consequences about how she would react.

Sarthak remained still in his position and saw Ajay going back to her. Apart from anger, there was some more remnant feelings that were burning him from inside. Possessiveness? he thought, but immediately brushed the thought off and went after him.

Meanwhile, Tanvi made her plan back to hostel. Her sixth sense told her that strange person will never work with her, and as five minutes passed by, she became sure of it. Then, she saw Ajay walking towards her. Unlike his before smiling face he is frowning now. What happened? Tanvi wondered.

"Come, Tanvi. We will participate together," he said and tried to fake a smile.

"What about your friend?" Tanvi asked Ajay, she sensed that he wasn't as cheerful as before.

"Well.... he didn't.... forget him. He said he isn't comfortable, and I kind of forced him to join, but he is not willing," he said, rubbing his temples.

'Great, Tanvi, you ruined other's friendship,' she thought. Now she was guilty about agreeing to team up with them. Had she not approached him, they both might have participated together.

She was about to apologize to him but was interrupted by a sudden voice, "Shall we go now, at least? It's already 10:30."

Tanvi and Ajay both looked towards the source of voice and found Sarthak there. He stood there emotionless and is only staring at Ajay.

Tanvi was shocked, but Ajay was dumbfounded. He knew that once he decides on something, it is impossible to change his mind, but was he standing in front of them?

"What are you staring at? Shall we start or not?" Sarthak asked sternly.

"What are doing here? You said you wouldn't come with us?" Ajay said, unable to understand what is running in his mind.

"What to do? My friend left me to be with another girl. But I cannot leave my friend, unlike some people who throw other persons out of their life without their mistake," Sarthak said, looking at Tanvi.

Ajay couldn't get his point and looked perplexed while Tanvi felt a pang of guilt in her heart. Though she didn't know this person, his words have evoked some of her bitter decisions from the past. She immediately hung her head low, which didn't go unnoticed by Sarthak. This was the reason why he came back to team up with them. He thought in this way he could inflict pain and show her how much he had suffered because of her.

Ajay looked at him for a minute and understood what he meant. He knew what all happened with that phone girl, so he tried to calm him down and smiled back at him, "Ok. Thank you, best friend for coming back and not leaving me, and I am sorry for leaving you. Let's go."

Saying this he glimpsed at Tanvi and nudged her as she was not paying any attention to their conversation. She came out her thoughts and smiled back at them and joined them. They reached the room where the tech fest was getting organized. The whole hall was crowded with many people from various college, and the coordinators.

"Hope we win among all these teams," Tanvi said, cheering up both the boys and herself. She looked at them and found one smiling at her while the other gasped aloud- no prizes in guessing who is who.

They sat together. Ajay sat in middle, and Tanvi and Sarthak were on either side of Ajay. All the while, Ajay and Tanvi kept talking to one another, which annoyed Sarthak to a great extent. To him, it felt like he was the third wheel between them. No matter how hard he tried to talk to Ajay, he didn't pay much attention to him.

Finally, after another bunch of teams were enrolled in the event, a coordinator came to the stage which they arranged. He went up and said all the rules and and regulations that would need to follow for participating in the event. There were two rounds, one scheduled on each day as a process of segregation and elimination. On day one, there was a coding round in which the organizers were supposed to eliminate half of the teams, and on day two, they had to develop a website from scratch within a time period of 10 hours. Finally, the best and innovative web developer will get a prize money of 50k. The second team 25k and the third 10k.

After hearing all the rules, regulations, and information about the two rounds, the trio faces lit up. While all three are happy for their own reasons, Ajay was happy because he could get to spend two days with Tanvi and try his luck. Sarthak was excited about the prize money, while Tanvi was jubilant about the whole new event and the prospects of her winning too.

Finally, the 1st round began, and everyone switched on their respective computers. Before that everyone had to get their teams registered where they were supposed to give basic details.

"Tanvi, fill our details too," Ajay said to Tanvi and as she was filling her details. She nodded her head and filled Ajay's details as she came to know almost everything in the small talk they had before, but she didn't even know the name of the other person in the team. She turned to Sarthak and called him, "Excuse me?"

He turned towards her and stared at her with a blank expression. He didn't say anything but kept a question mark face. Finally, Tanvi asked him, "Your name and details?"

He didn't give any reply. For a moment, he was terrified of her recognizing him by knowing his name. So, he remained mum. Ajay was confused, not knowing why he was not giving his details? So, he ahead to give the his details to Tanvi.

"Tanvi, he is from CSE branch, and this is his number," he said.

"Then... name?" Tanvi asked again as she doesn't know his name still.

"You didn't know his name till now?" Ajay asked, shocked.

Tanvi shook his head and asked him for his name again, and before he could say his name, Sarthak  stomped Ajay's foot.

"Ahhh," Ajay cried out in pain and held his foot in his hand. Tanvi was startled by his scream and left the registration sheet, and reaching out to him.

Sarthak didn't give any reaction as he had deliberately done this. Though he said a 'sorry' and 'he accidently stepped on his foot' he knew he didn't mean any of those words. He emptied his anger on Ajay in this way. And as soon as the paper slipped out from Tanvi's hand, he took it and said, "You go and start the competition. I will fill my details and will join you."

But he regretted saying this as Tanvi held Ajay's hand and took him to a chair at the nearby computer desk. Even Ajay acted a bit more as if he was in unbearable pain and walked too closely to Tanvi. Then, Sarthak's mind flickered, 'She doesn't know your full name, idiot. She only knows Rohan.'

He filled the details and submitted it to the coordinators before joining them both. Soon, the timer commenced, and they were given some arithmetics, logical, and mathematical puzzles for them to write programs on and code it. They were given a time period of 3 hours and a set of fifteen problems. The trio shared it among themselves and started working on them. At that moment no one felt uncomfortable with one another. No matter how much Sarthak loathed Tanvi's presence, he was way too immersed in his work to give her a second thought. The only time he felt discomfort was when Ajay swapped his seat with Tanvi as both CSE students could work quickly.

So, when Tanvi sat beside him, he became stiffened, but became normal after some time. Tanvi behaved normally with him. She kept on talking, giving and taking suggestions, making changes, and asking him whether they were doing everything right or not. He barely replied in single words 'yes' and 'no'.

No matter how much she spoke with him, he only sent out negative vibes to her, which made her uncomfortable.

Finally, by the time everything was rounded up, they completed solving all the 15 problems. They were pretty sure they will qualify for the next round. Tanvi went away and joined Jiya for lunch. She told Jiya what had happened there and also about that strange person. It was a pity that she still didn't know his name. Then Jiya shared all her experiences about how she gave her solo performance and how loudly the crowd cheered for her then and all.

By the time everyone finished their lunch, the qualifiers results for both dance competition and technical fest were announced. Tanvi was with Jiya and waited for Jiya's name to be heard and first her name was announced in the list as qualifiers. Both jumped in joy and shouted aloud like crazy.

Disturbing their joyful moment, Ajay called her and asked her to join their tech results too. Both Jiya and Tanvi went together. Tanvi was so happy for Jiya, and at the same time, nervous about her results too. Soon, they reached the same hall and spotted Ajay and Sarthak. The girls approached the boys. As usual, Ajay welcomed them with a warm smile and greeted Jiya, too, while Sarthak stood there, not concerning himself with their issues.

Soon, the coordinators started announcing the selected teams along with their allotted team numbers. Finally, they announced their team too

"Team 23 with participants Tanvi, Ajay and Sarthak."

As soon as she heard the name Sarthak, Tanvi's mind went blank. All the sounds around became mute to her ears.

'Sarthak'.

That was the only thing that her mind registered. On the other side, Ajay jumped and hugged Sarthak, who hugged him back. Jiya, too, congratulated her friend but felt weird seeing her not responding.

Then Tanvi came out of her thoughts and looked at Sarthak. Was his name really Sarthak?

"Tanvi, listen, the next round is scheduled for tomorrow," Ajay said, tapping on her shoulders.

She immediately became aware of the surroundings and listened to the instructions about the following day. On the next day, the selected teams were to develop a website that would be useful for everyone. They were given a time from morning 8 am to 4 pm, and by 7 in evening, the winners were to be announced, their prizes awarded, and the fest would come to an end by 9 after completing all the events.

After listening to all the rules, all the four persons started their way back to their hostels and went towards the exit gate.

"So, guys, what will be the idea of our app? What would be it's main theme?" Ajay asked as they sat on a bench they found.

Jiya excused herself as she saw an old friend of her, so only the trio was left behind to discuss.

Tanvi was finding it awkward to be with someone else named Sarthak. Somewhere she is feeling like he might be the Rohan Sarthak she knew. But what if he was not? She was contemplating with her own thoughts when Ajay bought his hands to her face and clapped in front of her eyes, which startled her.

"What happened?" Ajay asked and she shook her head saying nothing. She glimpsed at Sarthak, and found him staring at her, more like frowning at her.

"So Sarthak do you have any ideas?" Ajay asked him.

Sarthak spoke up, "Well, let's create an app like 'Truecaller', but in this, we should be able to see their profile pic, address, and other details to exactly know who the other person is. That way, no one can mistake the other person whatsoever."

Ajay's smile fell as he heard Sarthak talking about his past again. He knew how much pain he had gone through because of that phone girl. He went up to him and placed a hand on his shoulder, trying to calm him.

On the other hand, Tanvi was frozen to her place. It felt like she was hearing her own story, like this Sarthak was the one she knew, and he was taunting her. She looked at him, but he was not looking at her now.

Suddenly, Ajay's phone started ringing, and he went to answer it leaving Tanvi and Sarthak behind.

Tanvi looked at him and waited for him to look back at her, and he did so after a few seconds. He found her looking at him with a stunned and nervous expression.

"Is your name Sarthak?" Tanvi asked him slowly and he nodded at her, feeling nervous 'why is she asking my name?'

"Are you Rohan Sarthak from..... K.V?"

And Sarthak froze at his spot.

So how's the chapter guys???

I am nervous about this one. Wondering how it came out. Please give me your reviews about this one.
