“C’mon dimples! You got this!”

I looked to the left of my shoulder to see Kay sitting up on the towel, her feet crossed underneath her as her hands rested flatly on her thighs. Her long hair was hanging around her shoulders in messy waves, and occasionally brushing her stomach whenever a breeze came by. She was smiling at me encouragingly and lifted her hands, giving me a thumbs up and making a smile appear on my face.

I turn my focus back towards the end of the volleyball game, and survey the open spots on the sand. It was my turn to serve, and we were at twenty three  points, while the other team was at twenty. We needed one more point to win this game, and It all depended on me. I glance over at Kevin, a guy I had met while playing and who also happens to be on my team and he nods at me to serve the ball. I look over at Madison, who’s standing on the other side of the net and who is also glaring at me through slits. My mouth turns into a devilish smirk at the memory of me spiking the ball at her head several times in the past hour, a few times it actually hit her and it took everything in me to not burst into laughter, but most of the time I played it off as if it were a mere accident.

Seeing an open spot right behind her, I toss the ball above my head and throw all my strength into my arm as I strike the ball with my hand over the net. It flies straight for Madison, who throws herself on her knees and cups her hands together before hitting it back over to our side. A girl who’s name I forgot jumps for the ball and hits it back over quickly and it goes flying right back over to their side. It goes on back and forth for almost a minute and I start to feel the adrenaline coursing through me any time the ball nears me. I catch Madison’s eye in the midst of the ball getting hit back and forth, and she looks at me before glancing at Kay. The way she looks at her makes my blood boil, she looks at her like she is a toy she can’t wait to play with and my anger begins to flare when the corner of her mouth turns into a smirk. I look away from her quickly to see the ball coming towards me, and taking all my anger I have I spike the ball as hard as I can over the net, and straight at Madison’s face.

A loud smack echoes when the ball collides with her mouth, and she falls down onto her knees, covering her mouth with her hands. Her eyes are scrunched together in pain and when she pulls her hands back to look at them, there is blood on her palms. Her lip is bleeding, and her teeth are covered in redness from it. I feel guilty for making her bleed, but that quickly disappears when her eyes dart to Kay and she glares at her from under her eyelashes. Kay is completely oblivious from what is going on, and when I turn to her she is staring at me instead of Madison.

“Shit, Maddie are you okay?” Kevin asks in concern, but his face betrays him when his mouth twitches to keep from smiling.

Madison notices though. “Like you care, I can tell you’re trying not to laugh you asshole.” She sneers.

Kevin blinks at her innocently and holds his hands to his chest, faking hurt. “I’m not laughing. You’re hurt, why would I laugh at that?”

Madison rolls her eyes and turns her dark blue eyes to me accusingly. “You did that on purpose.”

I repeat Kevin’s previous actions. “I would never hurt a girl intentionally. It hurts me that you would think so low of me.”  She doesn’t blink. “But on the bright side we won. Or well, bright side for me anyways.”

She shakes her head in disbelief, and when I turn away from her I can’t help the smile from appearing on my face and the snicker from escaping my mouth. Kevin turns away from her too and he chuckles along with me, reaching his fist out to me.

I hit his fist with my own and he shakes his head and leans over to me. “Man, she deserved that. She’s a bitch. “

“Yeah, she is.”

We continue to chuckle and make small talk when I glance over at Kay, watching her looking down towards the water. Her eyebrows are furrowed together and she looks like she’s thinking hard about something.

“Hey, my sister is actually a fan of yours and is all in love with you. So maybe if you’re not seeing anyone I could hook you guys up?” Kevin suddenly asks.

I shake my head and point towards Kay. “Sorry man, I’m actually seeing someone.”

He looks over his shoulder towards Kay, and his eyes immediately roam her petite body. My jealousy flares from the way he’s looking at her but I quickly push it down. She’s mine. Not his.

“Huh, I recognize her…wait, is that Kay?” He asks, taking a step towards her.

I lightly place my hand on his arm, keeping him back. “Yeah, she doesn’t do well with people she barely knows though. How do you know her?”

“She was at UCLA right?” He asks.

I nod and he continues. “She was Madison’s roommate. I never understood why she was friends with Madison though, the way she got treated was fucked up.”

What?  “What do you mean the way she got treated?”

His eyebrows knit together as if he assumed I already knew what he was talking about. “You know, with what Madison did to Kay?”

“You mean when she kissed me?”

His eyebrows rose in shock and he shook his head. “What? No…I didn’t know she did that too. I was talking about before that.”

Too? What the fuck. “What did she do before that?” I ask in a panic. What the hell was going on?

“Kevin! C’mon! We’re getting something to eat!” One of the other guys that was on the other team shouts down to us.

“One second!” Kevin shouts over his shoulder at his friend.

“Dude c’mon!” His friend yells again. You know what, fuck him because this is important.

Kevin shakes his head and starts walking backwards towards his friend. “Sorry man, I got to go. It was cool meeting you though!”

“Wait!” I yell before he can leave. He stops in his place and waits. I glance over my shoulder to see if Kay is paying attention but she is still too busy staring at the water. “What’s your last name? We need to talk about this.”

“Why? Kay and Madison aren’t friends anymore so what does it matter?” He asks curiously.

“It matters because I think Madison is trying to play Kay again, and I need to know what you meant by what she did before.”

“Kevin!” His friend shouts again.

Kevin looks back over his shoulder, and gives his friend the finger before starting to back away. “It’s Hart. Kevin Hart. I’m in Dykstra Hall if you need to find me.” And with that he turns around and jogs towards his friends.

As I’m turning away I see Madison watching me closely, glancing between me and Kevin, her eyes narrowing. I clench my jaw together to keep from cussing her out and questioning her right here and turn away from her, walking down the beach to where Kay is sitting. I come up behind her and sit down, pulling her between my legs, her bare back pressed against my chest. I move her hair aside and push it over her left shoulder, exposing her right one completely as I lean down and place a small kiss on the tip of it.

“Miss me?” I ask playfully, trying to mask the concern in my voice from what else Madison did to her.

“You were only gone for an hour, not even that. Less then that actually.” She states.

I nudge her back and rest my chin on her shoulder. “You’re suppose to just go along with it and just say you missed me.”

“Oh,” She says in her usual monotone voice. She smiles and when she speaks again her voice is all girly and high pitched. “Well then in that case I missed you!”

I laugh and start to twirl a strand of her hair around my finger. “What were you thinking about?” I ask.

“Nothing, why?” She turns to look at me over her shoulder, her mouth centimeters away.

Her long eyelashes have some sand on them, and I reach my hand out to brush them off with my finger tips. “ I don’t know, you looked like you were thinking really hard about something.”

She blinks several times after I pull my fingers away from her eyes, and rubs them. “Oh,” She drops her hand and turns back to watch the water crash up the shore. “I was just thinking about the last time I was at the beach.”

“When was the last time?”

“When I was five.”

“Oh.” I peek around at her to see her eyes lost completely in thought as she starts to unconsciously brush the ends of her hair with her finger tips.

“What happened? When you were here when you were five?” I ask, hoping I’m not crossing a line.

She shrugs, and sighs before leaning farther back into me. “Nothing really, it was actually one of the most normal memories I have of my family. My mom and dad were getting along and me and Danny were playing in the sand spelling our names out.” Her eyes glisten as she speaks and she suddenly starts giggling, her body shaking against mine.

“Why are you laughing?” My mouth starts to turn up into a smile even though I have no I idea what is so funny. It’s her laugh though, it can make me smile no matter what the situation is.

“I just remembered how Danny was trying to teach me how to write my name nicely, and he kept getting mad at me because it was all messy and you could barely read it. He made me do it over and over again until I got it right, but I seriously couldn’t get it especially in the sand and he threw a fit and grabbed a stick and just messed the whole thing up, screaming about how it might as well be shit because that’s what it looked like.” She laughs really loudly now throwing her head back on my shoulder as she does. “Oh my god, he got in so much trouble for saying ‘shit’, my mom spanked him right there in front of everyone, it was so funny.” She continues to laugh, covering her mouth with her hand.

I pull her hand away, wanting to see her smile. “He actually said it? I thought you were just making that part up.”

“Nope,” She says, popping the ‘P’. “He said it, and I laughed at him when he got hit because that’s what he get’s for messing up my name after I tried so hard.”

I begin to laugh along with her, until her body calms down and all that’s left is a small smile on her face. “No but he honestly just wanted to teach me how to write my name in the sand properly, but I just couldn’t do it and he was so impatient. He could have never been a teacher. You know, that’s what he wanted to be? A teacher.”

I notice the way her voice grows sad at the thought of him never being able to be that, and before her thoughts could drift to a dark place, I push her forward slightly and stand up.

“What are you doing?” She asks, looking up at me.

I reach my hand down towards her. “C’mon, you’re going to write your name in the sand.”

“What? No, only little kids do that.” She starts to glance around at the people around us, but no one is paying attention.

“We are still kids technically and who cares it’s not like anyone is watching.”

She bites her lip before nodding and taking my hand. I pull her up to her feet and move down the beach a little until we reach a spot where there is flat and somewhat moist sand. I bend down and start to write my name using my finger tips, but continue even after I finish my name. I smile to myself when I finish, standing up and taking a step back to admire my work.

“You like it?” I ask Kay, smiling cheekily at her.

She rolls her eyes, but the small dimple on her cheek deepens when she looks down at it. “ ‘Harry + Kay= <3’ How junior high of you.”

I chuckle and lean over to kiss the corner of her mouth. “Now write your name, properly of coarse, otherwise teacher will have to give you a spanking.”

Kay laughs and places her knees into the sand as she reaches over, starting off with writing the ‘K’ in her name and going from there. She takes her time, and when she’s finished she pushes herself off the sand, and takes a step back, tilting her head as she admires her work.

“So?” She asks me.

I look down at the writing engraved in the sand, the way she swirled the end of her ‘K’ in a very elegant way, and the same with the end of the ‘Y’, the way it hangs and swirls around the rest of her name beautifully. It’s actually really nice, and if I were a photographer this is something I would like to take a picture of.

I take a few step towards her and lean down to kiss her lightly on the lips. “So, I think Danny would be proud of you.”

She looks up from the sand and her big brown eyes light up. The corners of her mouth turn up into a breathtaking smile, her dimple showing and her eyes scrunching up at the corners. I smile back and she looks down at her name, just as a wave comes up the shore and over our toes, washing away our writing. But that doesn’t keep the smile off her face as she follows the wave with her eyes, watching it go down the shore then staring back out to the ocean, smiling to herself.

“I think he’d be proud of me too.”
