HARRY
“Harry, Nicole’s here to see you!” My mum yells from the living room.
I glance at the time in the right top corner of my phone, realizing Nicole was a few minutes early. I had promised her we would spend some time together, so I agreed that I would go to the shops with her. I force myself to lock my phone, coming to the conclusion that Kay wasn’t going to call me anytime soon. It’s been three days since I’ve left, and it hasn’t gotten any easier. The days feel like they are dragging on, and every time I have spoken to Kaydence on the phone, she seems distracted or distant. My gut is telling me she is hiding something from me, but I keep telling myself I’m being paranoid and I am just worrying too much.
Standing up from my bed, I saunter to my dresser and throw on a white t-shirt, slide my green beanie over my messy hair, and stuff my feet into my brown boots, trudging out my bedroom door. I walk through the hallway and out into the living room, where Nicole sits on the white couch with my mum. I lean against the door frame as I wait for them to notice me, but they are too busy conversing.
My mum laughs at something Nicole says, and her eyes flicker to where I stand, finally noticing me. “Oh, there you are.” She smiles widely at me, and Nicole looks over her shoulder, her brown eyes finding me.
I smile, and eye them carefully. “What were you guys talking about?” I ask.
“Girl stuff.” Nicole says, a small smile playing on her lips as she stands up from the couch, and leans down to hug my mum bye.
“You kids have fun!” My mum says, as Nicole walks towards me.
“I’ll be back soon.” I say to my mum as I follow Nicole out of the front door to our flat.
“Oh, Harry wait!” My mum yells behind me. I turn around to see her run into the kitchen, moments later running back out and coming towards me with a white paper in her hand. “I need a few things from the grocery store, can you get them on your way back?”
“Yes, mum.” I answer, as I take the white paper from her and fold it into my pocket.
“Thank you.” She says, as she pecks my cheek and propels me out the door.
I stroll down the driveway, and towards my mum’s car. Nicole waits at the passenger door and I move around to her side, opening the door for her as she climbs in. Suddenly remembering Kay, I smile to myself at the memory of her slamming the door closed, and opening it herself one of the firsts times we argued. I shake off the ‘Kaydence’ thoughts flooding through my head, and walk back around to the right side and plop myself down into the seat.
I pull out of our driveway and drive down the familiar streets of London, Nicole occasionally reaching over to fiddle with the radio, settling on a song she likes.
“So,” She says, turning towards me. “How’s the famous life?”
“It’s alright.” I answer.
“Alright?” She scoffs. “You’re in one of the most famous boy bands in the world, and all you can say about the fame is that it’s ‘Alright’?”
“It’s not always brilliant, the fans are the best part but the paparazzi are the worst.” I state.
“Oh yeah, I heard you were seeing that singer Taylor swift for awhile.”
“Rubbish, I was never seeing her. Like I said, the paparazzi could be the worst part.”
“Okay.” She sits back in her seat and stares out the window, fiddling with the end of her sleeve. “So then, how are you and Kaydence?”
“Good.”
She continues to stare out the window, staring at the cars that pass us by. “Have you shagged her yet?”
I cough on my own spit, and look at her in disbelief. “That’s a tad personal, don’t you think?”
She shrugs, and tosses her dark brown hair over her shoulder. “I’m your best friend aren’t I?”
“Yes…”
She smiles lightly, and looks at me teasingly. “So have you?”
I shake my head slowly. “No, we are taking things slow.”
“Slow?” She snorts sarcastically. “Harry, when have you ever taken things slow with a girl?”
“It’s different this time.”
“How?”
“I love her, remember?”
Loud silence fills the car, and the air becomes uncomfortable. I peek at Nicole from the corner of my eye, and she presses her lips roughly together as she gazes out the window. I turn my eyes back to the streets and choose to let her be.
She finally turns her head towards me and smiles softly. “I’m happy for you.”
“Are you?” I ask suspiciously.
She looks down at her fingers, her dark eyelashes shadowing her cheeks as she picks at her finger nails. “Yeah, I am. If you’re happy, I’m happy.”
I stare at her momentarily, and smile. “Thanks Nikki.”
She grins at the childhood nickname, and turns her head to look out the window, putting her finger to the window as she points at a shop. “Hey stop there.”
I have already passed the store, and make a quick U-turn. I park along the sidewalk and put the car in park, and slide my sunglasses on before I step out of the car. I walk around the car to meet Nicole on the sidewalk, following behind her as she leads the way into the vintage shop. She automatically walks to a rack with a variety of clothes hanging from it, and I follow her, standing off to the side. I glance around the dark purple walls, and saunter towards a table that catches my eyes. There are several bracelets lying on the table, but another piece of jewelry catches my eye. I pick up the silver chain, and study the charm that hangs from it. The rose is silver too, but the middle of it shines red as it hits the light in a certain way, the tips of the pedals turn outward, and gives the effect of them blossoming. I glance up, and meet the woman’s eyes who stands behind the counter.
“Excuse me, how much is this?” I ask, raising the necklace up for her to see.
“It’s real silver, so thirty.” She asks, smiling.
“Thank you.” I grin back.
I saunter back over to Nicole, holding the necklace in my hand as I stop next to her and study the pile of clothes she has in her arms.
“You’re buying all that?” I ask.
“No, I’m going to try them on and see which I like best.” She pulls off a purple blouse from a hanger, and tosses it on her pile. “I’ll be right back.” She says, as she trudges to the dressing rooms. I stay near the racks, and eye ball a few t-shirts I see for myself. I grab a new plain black one, and a plaid green flannel, then walk over to a chair to sit at as I wait for Nicole to finish.
I pick my phone out of my pocket, and unlock the screen. I brighten at the sight of Kay’s name across my screen, signaling a text message received from her.
KAYDENCE:
Hey, sorry. It’s the middle of the night here and I just got in. I’m really tired, I’ll call you when I wake up in the morning. Miss you, night.
HARRY:
Just got in? From what?...It’s 3am there.
I stare at my phone in confusion after I send my last text. What could she possibly be doing at three freaking am? She doesn’t have many friends, so there is not much she could be doing.
My phone vibrates in my hand moments later, and I am quick to unlock my screen, eager to read her text.
KAYDENCE:
Spent some time with my new co workers. I’m exhausted, night!
I press my lips together and type a quick reply, then push my phone back into my pocket. I’m curious as to what her and her co workers were doing so late at night, but I’m happy she is making new friends, so I try not to question it.
Nicole steps out of the dressing room, carrying less clothes she had before and gestures for me to follow her. I stand and walk after her as she puts her small pile of clothes on the counter. The woman rings her up, and Nicole pays, grabbing her bag and stepping to the side as I lay my two shirts and necklace on the counter. The woman smiles widely at me as she scans the prices, and I smile back then glance at Nicole, and she shakes her head. I quickly pay, then walk out with Nicole and step out onto the sidewalk.
“Is there any other shop you want to go to?” I ask.
“No, I don’t feel like trying on anymore clothes. Can we just go to your flat and watch a movie or something?”
“Sure,” I gaze down the sidewalk, noticing a grocery store. “But first we need to stop by the grocer’s store. My mum gave me a list.”
“Okay, lets put our bags in the car though.”
I hold out my hand and take Nicole’s bag from her as I set it on the floor of the passenger’s seat, then walk back to where Nicole waits on the sidewalk. We start heading down to the store, when we head a scream behind us. I glance over my shoulder to see several girls jogging towards us, and stop.
I look to Nicole, and smile innocently.
“Go ahead.” She says, rolling her eyes.
We stay standing there, until the girls reach us. They all chatter at once and I smile and nod to them, trying to capture what each of them says to me. A girl with dark hair grabs my elbow and holds her phone out in front of my face, and leans in close to me. I smile as she snaps a few pictures, and smile again when the other girl does the same thing. I quickly say bye to them after they have all received a picture and saunter down the sidewalk again with Nicole.
We head in the grocery shop, and I slide the paper out of my pocket that my mum had given me earlier. I smooth out the crumpled paper, reading over my mum’s small handwriting. I pick up a basket and start filling it with the items my mum needs, and also fill it with a few of my own favorite things. Nicole meets me in one of the aisle’s and sneakily puts a jar of nutella in my basket. I raise my eyebrow at her she gives me a broad smile.
“It’s for when we watch a movie.”
I shake my head and smile. “Fine.”
I toss a pack of oreos in the basket, then walk to the counter when I have everything on my mum’s list checked off. Nicole stands by the magazine rack, reading over them as the man behind the counter scans my items.
“Kim and Kanye named their baby North West. HAHA.” Nicole says out loud, a massive grin on her face. Her eyes slide to another picture at the front of the magazine, and immediately the grin that was their moments before, falters.
“Oh my god…” She whispers to herself.
I try to peek over her shoulder at what she is reading, but her head covers it. “What? Is it something ridiculous about the band again?”
Her body goes rigid, and she immediately spins around. “Nope. It’s nothing.” She says, as she tries to use her body to shield the magazine.
My curiosity only heightens, and I stare at Nicole suspiciously. “What is it?”
“Nothing, just pay.” She’s a terrible liar.
I step away from the counter, and softly nudge her out my way, picking up the magazine she was reading over.
“Harry…” I look over at her and silence her with a glare.
At first, all I see is the picture of Kim and Kanye right on the cover, but my eyes move over the rest of the page and rest on the small picture sitting at the top right corner of the magazine. My heart stills, and I bring the magazine closer to my face. There is no possible way that is her. My eyes slide down at the small headline underneath it, and I suddenly feel very nauseous.
‘KAY DOESN’T GO IN ONE DIRECTION, BUT IN TWO DIRECTIONS’.
I continue to re-read the headline, and I glance back up at the picture, my eyes nearly burning holes through his tiny little head that is only inches from her face. I’m angry. No, scratch that. I’m fucking enraged.
“What is this magazine dated?” I ask Nicole.
“I don’t know…Harry it could be wrong..”
I ignore her, and look down at the bottom of the magazine, searching myself for the date. I feel even worse when I find it, realizing this was put on the stands on Monday. That picture had to be from Sunday then, after I left. I spoke to her Sunday though, and not once did she mention she was with HIM. She lied. She fucking lied to me.
My ears grow hot and I’m tempted to open the magazine to the page about them and read it, but Nicole snatches the magazine out of my hand, putting it behind a different one.
“Harry, you don’t know if that’s true. You know how magazine’s make rubbish up.”
I pull out my phone and start dialing, holding the phone to my ear.
“What are you doing?” Nicole asks me.
“I’m going to get to the bottom of this.”
“How?” She asks.
I ignore her, and turn my back away from her as the woman answers the phone. “Hi, I need to catch the next flight out to LA.”
