Chapter 5
*Toby's POV*
So it's been a week and I guess Newfield's isn't so bad. Dylan and I are officially unofficially dating (cause that makes sense xD), but we haven't really done anything except hang out and chat a lot and stuff. Here at the home, each person had a scheduled day to talk to Tom, and it was Friday, Dylan's day, so I was going to be bored for an hour or so >. "Hey..." I said nervously, glancing around for anyone who could help me if something happened, but saw no one.
Evan didn't stop looking me in the eyes, even as I fidgeted nervously. He hadn't seemed that bad before, at a distance, but now I was totally freaking out. It wasn't even near lunch time, so there wouldn't be anyone in the cafeteria for a while, and I still had a half an hour before Dylan's session was going to be over. Evan didn't seem like he was going to say anything, and instead just sat there staring at me.
"U-um I'm going to go... See ya..." I grabbed the book and stood, starting to walk away when my wrist was grabbed, roughly. I was swung back around, facing a now standing Evan. He looked down at me with stormy eyes. "W-what do you w-want?"
Without a word, Evan grabbed a fistful of my hair and pulled my face to his, planting his lips on mine forcefully. I was shocked, and confused and struggled to pull myself from him. His tongue pressed against my lips, demanding entrance to my mouth, but I kept them sealed as I fought to get free. Evan wrapped an arm around me, forcing me against him. Finally I managed to think of an idea and stomped on his foot, making him release me, cringing in pain.
I bolted out of the cafeteria and back to my room, faster than I'd ever moved in my life. I slammed the door as I got back and locked it behind me without hesitation. I sunk to the ground, panting and trying to catch my breath for a minute when someone knocked on the door. I almost freaked out, thinking it was Evan, when a familiar voice spoke.
"Toby? Hey, it's me. Open up." It was Seth.
I didn't really care for Seth, but didn't feel like being alone right now, so I stood and opened the door, letting him in. He looked at me in confusion as I locked the door right behind him, as if Evan could slip in any second.
"Whoa, are you okay? You look seriously freaked out." Seth said, sitting on the side of Dylan's bed.
"Y-yeah," I lied, trying to stop sounding so nervous and scared. "I'm fine... What's up?"
"I saw you fly in here and you looked scared, so I thought I'd come and see what's wrong." Seth sounded serious and sincere, not like his normal goofy self. He also seemed like he had something more to say, but I decided not to pressure him about it, knowing how it feels to be interrogated like that.
"It's nothing... I just... I think I was starting to have a panic attack or something." I didn't know what else to say and sat on the edge of my own bed, facing Seth, but not looking him in the eyes.
"You sure? You can tell me anything, Toby. We're friends." Seth knew I was holding out and he was the type to pester info out of someone. I checked the clock, we still had 25 minutes before Dylan was due back, so I guessed I had enough time.
"Okay... but you can't tell Dylan, okay?" I said nervously, hoping I could trust him. Seth nodded and seemed trustworthy, so I spilled, telling him everything about Evan kissing me and me running. At first, he didn't show any emotion at all on his face, then looked at me with the same empty expression. A second later, it softened into sympathy.
"You did the right thing running, but I don't know what to say. Evan's psycho and he always gets what he wants, so keep your eyes open from now on... and don't go anywhere alone. You probably pissed him off when you stomped on his foot, so he might be meaner next time, so don't give him a chance to be... Why don't you want Dylan to know?" Seth was suddenly serious and seemed genuinely concerned and it was strange.
"I don't know how he'll react... he seems like he'd get pissed and do something that could get him in trouble. Plus I don't want him mad at me... Please please don't tell him " I ended up begging.
"I don't think he'd be mad at you, but I won't tell him if you don't want me to." Seth said, sighing.
I was skeptical at first, but I could tell from the look in his eyes that he wasn't going to tell. It amazed me to see this side of Seth, who just a day before had seemed bitter and jealous towards me. It made me really wonder what else there could be in him, and all people for that matter. How could someone who normally didn't have a serious bone in his body be so understanding, trustworthy and make such a good confidant?
"Thanks, Seth..." I wanted so badly to ask him a question, but wasn't sure. In the end I decided to, suddenly filled with a courage that seemingly came from nowhere. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure." Seth said, seeming curious about what I wanted to ask.
"It's just um... I thought you hated me?" Okay, so it didn't really come out as a question, but I guess he got the point, though he did laugh.
"What? Why would you think that?" He asked as his laughter died down. My face was hot and I knew I was blushing.
"I d-don't know. It just seemed like you hated it when I was around you and Dylan." My voice faded off and I realized how stupid I sounded. "I'm sorry. Never mind."
"It's okay Toby... I get what you mean." Seth sighed and looked at his shoes. "I guess I probably did act like a dick for a while... It's just that... I kind of like Dylan."
My jaw dropped, and I was glad he wasn't looking so I could quickly close my mouth before he noticed. I didn't know what to say, so I just remained silent and he continued after a minute.
"I've liked him since I got here and he never liked me as anything more than a friend... so I guess I was just jealous that he liked you right away like he did. You haven't been here for a month yet and you already got what I've wanted for a year. So I guess I took that out on you. I'm sorry."
"I... I'm sorry. I didn't know you liked him." I said, feeling guilty. I guess I sounded sad, because Seth's head jerked up from where he'd been gazing at his shoes.
"Don't be sorry Toby, it's not your fault. He likes you, not me. That's not anyone's fault. I see that now, and I am really sorry I treated you so badly for it." Seth looked up at the clock on the wall, then looked at me. "Doesn't Dylan get out at 12? I'd better get out of here before he thinks something's up."
"Oh. Okay. It was nice talking to you... and thanks, Seth. For everything."
"No problem... and don't forget to watch out." He warned, before heading out the door and leaving me in the silent room.
As I sat there, lost in my own mind, I couldn't quit replaying all that had just happened. Seth had liked Dylan... that explained so much about how he'd treated me. And even though I wasn't confused about that anymore and I'd found a friend in a very unexpected person, it didn't help another confusion I had... Why did Evan kiss me? Why had he chosen me, out of every other person here? I sighed and fell back on my bed, suddenly really tired. I hoped Seth didn't end up spilling to Dylan, but right now that was the least of my worries. I had to keep and eye out for Evan, because if he'd kiss me out in the open like that, who knew what he'd do behind closed doors?
*Dylan's POV*
After my "session" with Tom, I was hungry, tired and extremely pissed. He always acts like I'm a total headcase and dangerous, even though I'm only a purple. I mean, if I was a red like Evan or some of the other actual headcases, I probably would mind so much being treated like one, but I've never hurt anyone here. I took a calming breath before heading on into the room Toby and I shared.
Toby was sitting on his bed, reading a book he'd probably gotten from the rec room. He looked up as I came in and for a second I thought I saw a glimpse of fear in his eyes, but if it was there it was gone in a second. He stood up, setting his book aside and walked up to me.
"Hey." He said as I took his hand, pulling him to my side. Immediately, he caught on that I was upset or bothered, because he looked up at me concernedly. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, Tom just pisses me off... Wanna go grab a bite?" I asked. He nodded and let the issue rest and we headed out to the cafeteria.
"So what'd you do while I was gone?" I asked, sitting down with my tray, joining Toby, who'd already gotten his food and sat.
He swallowed his 2 Zoloft pills and then shrugged. "Read mostly, and chilled in here some."
"Wow that sounds exciting." I said sarcastically, taking a bite of my chicken sandwich. He looked hurt for a second, and I realized it'd probably come out as sounding mean since I was in a mood. "I'm sorry Toby, I didn't mean it like that."
"It's okay." He said quietly, nibbling at his peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
We sat in awkward silence for a few minutes before Seth came and sat down in his usual spot, next to me. Right away I noticed there wasn't the tension that there usually was between Toby and Seth, making me curious as to what could've changed that. I didn't ask though, not wanting to ruin the good moment.
"So how was Tom today?" Seth asked hyperly. Obviously he'd skipped out on pills or something today.
"A dick, as usual." I mumbled.
"He seemed nice to me..." Toby said quietly, trying to walk on eggshells around me. I guess I still seemed pissed.
"He acts nice to all the newcomers, but when you go in for your session, he'll be a total dick. He just tries to get you all for changing, but if you don't progress as fast as he wants, he'll treat you like shit." Seth said, filling him in.
Seth told Toby some stories about how much of a dick Tom really was, but I was paying more attention to Evan, who was glaring at Toby. Evan always had a dog among the newbies, but it seemed now like he was going to try to get Toby to be his bitch... and I would die before I let that happen. I smirked, then reached across the table, pulled Toby over the table as well and planted my lips right on his. Toby was too surprised to react and Seth fell silent, from his chatterbox ranting. After a second, I let go and they both stared at me. I paid them no mind though, savoring the hurt, angry look on Evan's face as he stormed out of the cafeteria.
