Chapter 9 - Poppy Playtime

"Wake up."

Gasping, Gabriel sat up coughing. Rolling over onto his hands and knees, he continued to hack and wheeze for a few minutes. When the coughing finally subsided, the middle aged man remained in that hunched over position, slowly catching his breath.

Recovering from his nasty coughing fit, Gabriel leaned back so he could be sitting on his knees on the floor. He was still in the decorated room with the glass case. Said case was open and no longer contained a Poppy Playtime doll. Yeah, that wasn't a good sign. Gabriel had seen enough horror movies from the previous two decades to know that was indeed not a good sign.

"This all has to be a bad dream..." Gabriel muttered under his breath. The middle aged man heaved himself to his feet, grunting from the effort. Leaning against the flowery wallpaper of the room for support, he forced himself to stand on shaky legs that threatened to give out underneath him. Once he was absolutely positive that he could stand, he pushed off from the wall and exited the room.

He was getting the heck out of here.

Wandering down the hall, Gabriel looked left and right. Yes, the walls and various decor was the same from when he first entered the hallway. But it felt vastly different at the same time. It was enough to send shivers down his spine. He needed to get out now. Arriving at the end of the hallway at last, he opened the door to find a normal looking factory hallway. Hey, at least he was out of the old Victorian house part. He hated that section.

Shutting the door behind him, Gabriel wandered down the factory hall. Despite the decay, he remembered walking down this exact hall and others like it all those years ago. If he recalled correctly, this one led towards CEO Elliot Ludwig's office. His curiosity getting the better of him, Gabriel started running down the hall, eager to see the mysterious room. It had been a source of mystery amongst his old coworkers. There was a hole in the floor but it did nothing to deter the man as he swung across using his Grabpack. At last, he arrived at the office. Reaching out, he turned the doorknob.

It was locked.

"Of course it's locked..." Gabriel grumbled irritably. He really wanted to see what was in that room. Disappointed, the man was about to walk away when he accidentally kicked something with his foot. Looking down, he found a key in the shape of a poppy flower. No way it was that easy. Picking up the key, Gabriel turned to the door and put it in the keyhole. Success. It was that easy. The middle aged man didn't know if he should feel impressed or scared.

Entering Elliot Ludwig's office, Gabriel was expecting it to be as dilapidated as the hallways. But that wasn't the case. The office, though dusty and a little messy, was in one piece for the most part. Probably thanks to it being locked from the outside world for the past ten years or even longer.

Taking a look around with his sleuthing skills, Gabriel found a few things. Artwork on the walls of various characters like Huggy. A golden statue of a spindly flower figurine. An old vhs tape that was a documentary about Elliot Ludwig himself. Perhaps the most mysterious thing was a note about a test done on a rat dubbed Experiment 814. The test failed to bring the rat back to life based on the words scribbled on the page. Was it disturbing? Oh heck yes it was.

Setting the note back down on the desk where he found it, Gabriel scanned the room. There were no windows. The only way in or out was the door he had just come through. How could Elliot stand being in there? Gabriel knew he would have a fit if he couldn't see what was outside. He heard rumors that Elliot loved his privacy but this seemed a little too much.

His eyes settling upon a large ventilation shaft, Gabriel tilted his head to the side. Common sense told him not to go there, he wouldn't find anything on the other side. Worse, it could be a trap. But the middle aged man could feel something drawing him in. Using his Grabpack hands, he tugged the cover off and clambered inside. "God, if you can hear me," Gabriel prayed, "Please don't let Huggy be in here."

Thankfully alone in the vent, Gabriel crawled on his hands and knees through the dark tunnel that stretched before him. He crawled and crawled and he crawled some more. It let him into a small room with pipes. Perplexed, Gabriel observed his surroundings. Why did he come here again?

A box high up fell down, revealing a living and breathing Poppy Playtime doll.
