Chapter 20 - Hide And Seek

"I asked you to play fair and you CHEATED!" Mommy thundered, her fist pounding the floor. Frightened, Gabriel tumbled backwards. He scrambled away from the giant spider-like toy, fear glistening in his eyes. There was nothing but anger in Mommy's green eyes though as she spat, "Mommy HATES cheaters!"

"Look, I'm sorry- wait, how was I supposed to win Statues with that dead end?" Gabriel questioned, confused. That's when it clicked inside his mind. Putting two and two together, he exclaimed, "You cheated! You made it so I couldn't win!"

"You were never supposed to win any of these games! You were supposed to die and feed the others!" Mommy fired back, rearing her head back. Her long limbs contorted in wild shapes as she added, "And now they're dead because of you!"

"Because of me? Because of ME?! I'm not the one who killed them in cold blood!" Gabriel retorted. Slamming her hand down, Mommy shouted, "I had no choice! I couldn't let them suffer anymore! If you had just died, Bunzo and the Wuggies would be happily enjoying their first proper meal in years!" Closing her eyes, she opened them again as a sinister grin appeared on her face. "But nevermind that," she hissed, "That'll mean for me and PJ for dinner tonight."

"What?" Gabriel gasped. Rolling over on his hands and knees, he finally managed to get up to his feet. He was swiftly grabbed by Mommy. Turning her prey upside down as she came face to face with him, the toy purred, "Oh yes, we're going to play one last game! It's called Hide... and... SEEK!" At that last word, she threw Gabriel down the hall.

Pain flared up in Gabriel's shoulder as he hit the wall. Thankfully, he didn't think it was broken. But boy was it sore. Rubbing it, he was caught off guard when he heard Mommy begin to count, "Ten, nine, eight..." Fear coursing through his veins, Gabriel bolted. Ain't no way he was sticking around. Practically flying down a flight of stairs, he quickly went and hid under them just as he heard Mommy conclude, "Three, two..."

An uneasy silence followed. But that's when Gabriel heard the footsteps. He held his hand over his mouth, some poor attempt to keep himself quiet. Shaking like a little leaf, he glanced up just as Mommy passed over him. The middle aged man held his breath. Fortunately, the toy never bothered checking underneath the stairs. She crept away, hunger gleaming in her eyes. Taking a left turn, she disappeared without a trace. Crawling out, Gabriel took the right path.

He had to escape.
