Chapter 8
I face palm myself while releasing a long groan. Despite the innocent look Ed threw over his shoulder and how clueless his eyes seemed to be I still couldn't believe he acted on instinct. It was beyond human.
"So, he was subconsciously acting to the word, runt?" I ask aloud. Ed didn't seem to notice my stare and shrugs nonchalantly when I don't reply to his question. I'm sure the answer itself was pretty self-explanatory anyway.
"Yep." Al sighs solemnly. He moves to help Ed with tying up the group of men. It seems the rest of the men complies with the brothers, I'm sure they were afraid of Ed due to his outburst.
Once the two were done I walk over the tied men and inspect them with a frown. The man Ed kicked continuously looked horrific. Gashes everywhere and his right eye swollen.
I send Ed a deadpanned stare. "You sure you didn't kill him?"
He scoffs while crossing his arms. He doesn't so much as give the injured man another glance. "He's fine. He can take a few kicks." Ed replies tartly. I frown before taking a step back.
"A few kicks, my foot. He looks like a stampede ran over him!"
"Believe me, Y/n he's fine." He looks back at the group, with all them stiffening under his gaze. "Are there any more of you?" Ed asks sternly.
Immediately the man with a bruised face replies. "There's some in the engine room, four in the first class car, and another four in coach car in different locations."
I had a hard time understanding a word he said. The words tumbled out of him with such speed that they were all jumbled together. He was panicking, his eyes widening as he body shakes.
Ed had got in his face giving the man a kind smile, but a raised fist. Actions speak louder than words and the man knew it. He squeaks like a mouse as he tries to lean away from Ed.
"Is that all?" Ed asks nicely.
"Y-yes! That's all!" The man squeaks. Ed holds his stare a moment longer before pulling away with a sigh.
"There's ten of them!" A woman tells from the front. She shoots us a terrified stare, her hands clasped together over her chest. The man beside her doesn't favor the same look as her though. He glares disappointedly at us like we did some personal writing to him.
"Where are you going to go now?" He demands hotly. "Once they hear about you beat up their men they'll retaliate!"
A few nods and murmurs of agreement flooded the car. I look around confused. Weren't these people afraid of these men earlier?
How come they're blaming Ed and Al for standing up to them? They practically save their lives. I give the man a dirty glare, he shuts up immediately and casts his gaze to the side.
"Well if someone here acted mature then things could've been handled peacefully." Al reasons, shooting Ed a glare.
I also looked at the boy silently agreeing to Al's words. He did have a point. Ed notices and looks at us repeatedly till groaning.
"YOU CAN'T MOVE FORWARD IF YOU KEEP REGRETTING THE PAST!" He fumes with a puffed cheek.
I roll my eyes, attempting to ignore that cute childish look he portrayed. "Can we just please focus on the fact that this train is hijacked?"
Ed blinks out of his infuriated state. He looks back at me with a blank stare as if he remembered the situation.
"R-right," he breathes. "Al, you'll take care of them from below and I'll go above."
"Sure, sure." Al replies with a sigh.
Did I hear that correctly? Above? As in—outside above? I could sense a bundle of nerves swirling in my stomach when I look at Ed with wide eyes.
"You don't mean going outside, do you?" Ed doesn't answer but he gives me a mischievous grin. One that shows how real he was being. I swallow thickly, imagining how terrified it must be. "You can't go alone." I mutter.
"And why's that?" He pouts. "I'm more than capable of handling this."
He was right. He can handle this. I know for a fact Al and him wouldn't have difficulty fending off these criminals. However, that did little to nothing of easing my conscious.
I was unsure of why my stomach twisted and my body became jittery. All I knew was Ed couldn't go out there. At least not alone.
Swallowing thickly, I march my way towards Ed. His spine straightens when I came near, his eyes widening rapidly. "Um, Y/n what're you—"
I push past him and yank open the window. Immediately I was greeted with the whistling of the wind blowing past by. I swallow thickly, I never enjoyed jumping onto a moving train and now this? I had to go on the roof of one? God, I hope this was worth it.
"Are you just gonna stand there or what?" I demand with my back still turned on the brothers. "I'm sure those guys don't have all day."
I imagine Ed had the look of shock. With his mouth hanging open and his eyes glued on me. I felt his stare and it made all the hairs on my body stand.
Though I don't blame him. What interest did I have in saving all these people or even be part of the action? None, I tell myself.
I had no desire to do either of those things. But I had to be at Ed's side—just in case. Hearing Ed huff brought me back to reality. He appeared beside me.
"You're becoming intriguing by the hour," he grins widely. Immediately my face flushes and I curse under my breath at how quick I can become flustered. I turn back to the window finding sudden interest at the moving scenery.
"Doubt it." I grumble.
Ed only chuckles in answer, his lips curved upwards. "Alright, just watch yourself when we get up there."
That being said he climbs out the window with ease. Though despite how easy he made it look, it was far from it. The wind pressure increased drastically once half his body made it out the window. It pushes against him roughly that only his fingertips clutched the outer rim of the window.
"WIND PRESSURE! WIND PRESSURE!" He screeches.
I watch in surprise as he body flops against the wind like a fish out of water. Al rushes to the scene and grabs Ed tightly.
"I got you, brother!" He assures. Once Ed hoists himself up onto the roof it was my turn. With Al's help I was able to successfully get into the roof as well.
Although, I yelped in surprise when the wind hit my face. I crouched down and dug my fingers into the metal roof. The color in my face disappears, one wrong move and I'll be dead.
"You sure about this, Y/n?" Ed asks before me. He was crouched as well but not as much as me. He throws me a concerned look as he gestures down below. "I can always help you get back in the car—"
"No." It took a moment, but with shaky legs I was able to stand. I toughened myself and forced myself to forget how terrified I was. I wasn't about to show weakness of front of Ed. "I'll be fine. Let's just get this over with." I sigh tightly.
He gives me on last stare before his lips spread into a crooked smile. "Okay, wanna race to the engine car?"
"Are you crazy?" I exclaim. "You want to run? On a moving train?"
He shrugs, "I mean, how else do we get there? Let's have some fun at least."
Fun, my foot! How can he suggest such a thing? Running on this thing meant dying! I didn't leave Resembol to have an early grave!
"Do I need to emphasize more on moving train?" I frown as I try to ignore the knots forming in my stomach.
I could tell Ed was having fun with this. His golden eyes glimmered in mischief, his lips spreading wide in amusement. He turns around, his back facing me.
"Your loss then," he breathes. "Guess I'm just going to leave you behind then."
He only makes it a couple steps, however. Panic had coursed through me when I actually saw him leaving. I shouted for him to, "Wait," causing him to look back with a lopsided grin.
I blush furiously as I attempted to jog like him. Only, I looked like a fawn trying to walk. "Shut up." I grumble once I made it so his side.
He chuckles and looks ahead. "Didn't say anything."
And with that we both ran across the moving train towards the engine car. Our footsteps thudded against the roof but that wasn't the only sound that filled my ears. Sharp bangs filled the air each second.
I wasn't sure where the sounds were coming from, but each time my foot touched the roof three bangs were heard. It was till I saw Ed jumping around, screaming. Gunshots shot through the roof leaving holes in their wake.
Could the men hear us running? Though I think the men assumed it was only Ed up here. Their shots were aimed at him, not me.
He acted as if he were chicken with its head chopped off. Running towards me I began to shake my head furiously. "Don't even think about it—"
"Shut up and run!" He yanks my arm and pulls me along. I started to feel the gunshots fly past my feet and each one was closer than the last.
I couldn't take it, I wasn't sure when I getting hit but I was determined to never getting shot. I jump on Ed's back ignoring his surprised shrieks.
"Y/n, what the hell are you doing?" He screams.
"Saving my ass, now hurry up!"
Ed doesn't need to be told twice. I wrap my legs tightly around his small waist as he sprints across the roof, jumping here and there to avoid being shot. We make it to the side of the car, Ed jumps down once the gunshots finally cease.
I jump off his back and slump against the railing. My heart rate was faster than ever, and I wasn't the one running. Ed slumps down next to me, his attention fixated on his shoe.
Taking it off he reveals his automail foot, and what seems to be a small bullet. My stomach drops with cold sweat streaming down my back.
"That was close," Ed breathes, taking the bullet out to examine it.
"Yeah, if it was your other foot. . ." I trialed off, not wanting to think of the last part.
"I would've been a goner." Ed finishes with a sigh. He takes a stand, his eyes narrowed into a glare. "Just you wait." He growls angrily. "Y/n, let's go."
Nodding, I stand as well. Though I wondered if it was smart to recapture the engine room first. "We're going to recapture the engine room first, right?" I ask. "Seems logical."
"Psh, obviously." Ed snaps. Clearly being shot in the foot set him in a foul mood. I follow his lead as he climbs back into the roof once more.
We were already atop the engine room, I had a feeling the men inside were on high alert. "You go left and I'll go right," Ed mutters.
I had no say for he already made his way to the right window. Heaving a sigh, I make my way to the side of the train. Getting on my stomach I lean downwards till I'm able to glance into the engine room.
There's two men armed with guns, the conductors working in panic. I take notice Ed in the window across me, he throws in the small bullet. Both men follow the sound and inspect the bullet.
"The hell?" I hear one man mutter.
Looking back at Ed I realize he was already looking at me. Befuddled by the sudden stare he abruptly sends me a goofy look, sticking out his tongue. I smile slightly till he gives a nod.
He jumps into the cart with me not far behind. Ed kicks the man closest to him in the head, sending him flying into a large pipe. He was instantly knocked out cold.
"Why you little. . ." A large arm wraps around my waist keeping me in place. I felt the barrel of the gun pressed against my temple.
I didn't think nor did I have time to examine the situation. Immediately I slam my foot atop his, gaining a yelp of surprise. His hold loosens slightly but enough for me to elbow him in the stomach.
He stumbles back with a snarl, I swerve around to face him. But he didn't have time to face me, with a loud whack he falls face forward to the floor. One of the conductors had slammed their shovel against his head.
Ed cheers beside me and sends them a thumbs up. "Yeah!" He grins.
The conductors only huff in approval with their eyes still on the fallen men. The triumphant feeling was short-lived, however. Ed rushes out the engine and jumps onto the ladder just outside the cart.
"Is there anything we can do?" One of the conductors inquired with a frown.
I nod, following Ed's lead. "Just drive safely, please!"
With that Ed and I head back onto the roof once more. Once on the roof I see man with a gun, popping out from the latch door. With a evil smirk he aims the gun at us.
I swallow thickly, somehow I needed to block the bullet that come at us very soon. But I couldn't transmute but clapping my hands, Ed would only ask question. And I wasn't ready for that.
Hearing the gun lock I knew I had to act now. Not thinking twice I shove on my black glove and snap my fingers just in time when he shot his gun. The bullet swerves the right, protecting Ed just in time.
I release a breath and lower my hand. The man seemed stupefied by my action, he didn't seem to register the situation for a moment.
"Ed. . ." I warn cautiously. "Think of something—now."
He ignores my warning and crouches down. The man was taking aim again. I was becoming restless.
"Get behind me," Ed orders.
"But—"
"Just do it," he snaps. "Everything is under control."
I hesitate for moment longer before scurrying behind him. I don't crouch just in case I had to block the attack again.
Ed claps his hands before slamming them onto the the roof below our feet. Quickly he transmuted a cannon and I wasn't sure how he was going to operate it.
"It's dangerous to be shooting at us, you know!" He transmutes once more, allowing bursts of water shoot out of the cannon.
It didn't miss the man, he screams loudly before heading back into the cart. Ed stands and grins widely in triumph. I felt my heart rate easing at the sight of his grin.
"Hey, what are you doing to the tender cart?"
Glancing over my shoulder, one of the conductors peeked his head out the window to send us a glare. "That's water and coal for the whole train!"
"My bad!" Ed shouts back with a sheepish smile.
Did he say water? Frowning, I look down at my feet. Could we use the water against these hijackers?
I'm sure it'll catch them by surprise if somehow transmutes into the carts they're in.
I look back at Ed, "Hey, Ed let's use the water against the high-jackers."
He thinks for a moment till it finally clicks in his head. He gives me an approving smirk. I dunno how I was able to keep myself from blushing at the sight.
"Now you're talking."
