Chapter 16 - "Cousin?"

"Yeah, Lainey is my cousin. It's crazy that she's with your brother," Victoria shook her head as if she didn't believe it.

"They just met this morning. Also, they shouldn't be doing anything they shouldn't, Kaven Michael," I looked sternly at him, acting as if I were Mom, even though I knew Mom would've said it with more authority.

"We didn't, and we won't.." Kaven's voice slowly trailed off. I knew he was lying, but I didn't say anything. He was old enough to make his own choices.

"Just be careful, okay Kav?" Mom told him, shaking her head in disbelief.

"Okay, Mom," Kaven nodded.

"It was nice meeting you!" Mom called as Kaven walked away with Lainey, back into the kitchen where they were going in the first place. Mom then looked at all of us in the living room and quietly said, "I'm not sure how I feel about this."

"Mom, they're soulmates. They're okay," I laughed.

"Yeah, sure. Okay, I'm sorry," She stuttered and moved the focus of her eyes to the hallway.

My friends and I continued talking until I sensed enough tension and suggested that we go up to my room. They all agreed, so the six of my friends, Calum, and I went up to my room and sat down.

"I can't believe that I totally forgot about my birthday coming up. I guess I was just distracted by everything that happened with Calum," I chuckled.

"Yeah, it's okay. We're still here and having a party for you, aren't we?" Alexandria laughed.

"We are," I nodded. I still couldn't get my mind off of what Mom thought of Kaven and Lainey.

"You know what I think?" Victoria commented, "I think my next family reunion or the next family picnic will be a little awkward."

"Yeah. I had no idea Lainey was your cousin," I shook my head in disbelief.

"Well, now that I think about it, I remember when I met Kaven, I thought I remembered seeing a necklace like his before. Every time I'd see Lainey, I had the same thought. I just hadn't put two and two together.." She sighed.

"Could we talk about something else, please?" Ruby asked, "Other than Kaylee's brother and Victoria's cousin?"

"Yeah, that would be fine. I'm sorry for bringing it up again," Victoria apologized.

"What do you want to talk about, Ruby? Is there someone you want to tell us about?" Eliza wondered.

------

My friends and I continued to talk for a while. We talked about random things, mostly about what we were all planning on doing since we were already out of high school.

I was personally thinking about going to college, but I wasn't sure what I was going to do with Calum around. I didn't know if I wanted to go to college or what I wanted to do at all. I couldn't help but think about us getting married. What would my job be? What was Calum planning on doing as a job? We'd have to have a plan for those kinds of things.

"Calum, could I talk to you alone for a little bit?" I asked him as my friends continued to talk. They stopped talking as Calum and I walked out of my room, and they faced us. "You guys can keep talking. I just need to talk to Calum for a minute or two.."

Calum and I walked out of my room and sat in the hallway beside my door. He looked concerned and asked me what I was thinking.

"I was just wondering.. I really don't know what I want to as my job. I just wanted to know what you were thinking about doing?" I questioned him.

He sighed and thought about it for a minute, "I'm really not sure either, but I was think about getting into the music business. I love music."

"But, Calum, I don't think that's a good and solid career. Are you thinking about being a singer? In a band? They're really risky. You are never completely sure if you'll make it in the music business."

"Then I'll play professional football. I went to Brazil in 2012 to represent Australia, but I left.." Calum sighed.

"I didn't know that. Why did you leave?" I wondered.

"Well, I-" he stopped and looked at me, but he looked right back down at his hands before speaking again. "I thought I wanted to be in a band, but it didn't work out.."

"Oh, I'm so sorry," I felt bad for Calum; he had given up his soccer career for something that didn't work out.

"It's okay, Kaylee. I just.. I was thinking about doing football professionally and I would really like to, if that's okay with you," he smiled at me.

"That would be great, Calum. I'd love that. I'm still not sure of what I want to do. I have no idea what I would be good at."

"Who knows? Maybe try some things out, and you might find something you really enjoy doing or something you're really good at," Calum advised. I nodded, and I thought his idea was great. I knew that I should do that because I didn't have any idea of what I wanted to do or where my strengths were.

"That's an amazing idea, Calum. I'm definitely going to try that. But where do I start?" I questioned, intrigued to start trying to find the perfect career.
