Emily
I groaned as a bright light came into my room. Squinting my eyes, I got up from the bed and stretched. It has been two days since the surprise, and I was still a bit overwhelmed by the sudden events.
Lilly's furniture from New York had finally arrived, and they definitely made the house more lively. I had gotten some stuff for my room to, but I still had to get more clothes.
Devyn told me that she would go shopping with me, and I'm glad, because her taste in clothing is amazing.
I was halfway down the stairs when I heard the sound of pots falling.
"Fuck!"
Laughing, I ran the rest of the way down. When I walked inside the kitchen, Lilly was leaning against the counter, rubbing her temple in frustration. I picked the pans off the floor and handed them to her.
"Thanks", she mumbled, "I was trying to make some eggs, but then this happened."
I chuckled and raised my eyebrow. "Why don't you let me handle the cooking in the house?"
Lilly sighed. "If you say so."
Cooking was something I was used to, and I somewhat enjoyed it. My mother used to make me cook food everyday for the house.
It was definitely tiring, but fun if I did it without being forced to.
That reminded me of something. I had to tell Lilly the truth of why I was kicked out, and what was happening. I planned to tell her when we first got to LA, but I had forgotten. It's hard to find the right time to bring up something like that.
After five minutes of cooking, I turned off the stove and grabbed a plate.
The sunny-side-up eggs were perfect, and I had thrown some bacon on the stove for Lilly too. I personally wasn't a fan of bacon, but she was crazy about it.
I placed her plate and fork on the coffee table and sat down on the couch next to her. Her favorite show was playing on the tv, so I had to snap my fingers in front of her to get her out of her trance.
Lilly looked down at her plate of eggs and smiled, but then looked over at me and frowned.
"You're not gonna eat?", she questioned.
"I ate a big dinner yesterday."
She nodded and turned back towards the tv, but then spun around towards me a few minutes later.
"No, you didn't. And now that I'm thinking about it, I haven't seen you eat really anything since the plane. That was around two weeks ago, Em!"
"I-"
I sighed in relief. My excuse was cut off short by the sound of someone FaceTiming me.
Thankfully, it was Brennen. I stood up and quickly walked up to my room, flopping unto my bed. I ran through my hair to try to make it look good, then answered it.
He must've just woken up. His hair was a little messed up, but it looked nice.
Brennen smiled. "Hey."
His voice was deep and raspy, it was kind of attractive.
I laughed. "What's up, loser?"
Brennen put his hand on his chest.
"Okay, ouch, that hurt. I wanted to know if you wanted to come over. Colby's here too."
I smiled and nodded. "Yeah, of course! Let me just go get Lilly."
"Uh...um..I.."
Looking back at the screen, I saw him stuttering.
"What is it?"
"Um, I was just wondering if only you could come. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against Lilly! I just...wanted to hang with you. And Colby."
I nodded slowly. "Oh. Yeah, okay. Let me just get changed."
"I'll text you my address."
We hung up, and I rummaged through my closet for an outfit.
I know that I would have to finish the conversation with Lilly later. She wasn't going to let it go until I gave her an answer. At least I would have time to come up with an excuse to give her.
Finally, I found an outfit and threw it on. With Brennen and Colby, I had no idea of where we were going or what we were doing, so I grabbed my backpack and put a jacket, flashlight, and phone charger inside of it.
I grabbed my phone and ordered an Uber. It would be here in five minutes. I was dreading to go downstairs. I know Lilly would try to pick up the talk from earlier, and I didn't want to tell her that Brennen only wanted me to come.
I walked downstairs and peeped my head around the wall. She was watching tv. Although I didn't want to interrupt her, I walked into the room.
"Hey Lills."
"Hey. Where are you going?"
"Brennen asked me to go to his house."
Lilly frowned, then smiled. Reaching across the couch, she picked her phone up off of the table.
"That's fine, I'll just hang with Colby."
I sighed. "He's gonna be with us."
Lilly put her phone back down. "Oh. Do they not like me or something?"
"No, no. They don't have anything against you, Brennen just wanted to hang out with me. I'm sorry Lilly."
She sighed and glued her eyes back to the tv. "Alright, have fun."
"Are you...mad?"
Lilly chuckled. "I could never be mad at you, Em. I'm just bored, is all."
A horn honked outside, so we both said goodbye. I really hope that she isn't actually mad or hurt, I couldn't live with myself knowing that I made her feel bad.
I jumped in the Uber and smiled at the driver. I gave him the address, and watched as he carefully put it in the GPS.
It wasn't a long ride, maybe only ten minutes. Another good thing about Los Angeles is that almost everything is close to each other.
Soon, we reached Brennen's house. I handed him a ten dollar bill, with a five dollar tip.
I jumped out, and he quickly sped away. I walked into the building and texted Brennen, asking him which floor he was on. Once I got the answer, I got in the elevator and headed up.
Finding the apartment was surprisingly easy. I rang the doorbell, and a soft bark instantly came from the other side. The door opened, and a small dog jumped on me. I squatted down and petted him, laughing.
"Hey, Em."
My eyes trailed up, and Brennen was standing at the doorway. He smiled and held the door open for me.
"Hey."
I scooped Kobe up and followed him inside, closing the door with my foot. Kobe stared in my eyes, and I stared back.
"Brennen?"
"Yeah, what's up?"
I looked over at him with puppy eyes.
"Can I please have your dog?"
He gasped and ran over to me, taking Kobe in the the process.
"You can't take him, he's my son!"
I smiled, then remembered that someone else was supposed to be here.
"Where's Colby?"
"Oh! He....um.."
What was going on with him? He was stuttering and acting nervous ever since the FaceTime call. I raised my eyebrow as he stumbled over his words, trying to find something to say.
He looked down and played with his rings, sighing.
