One
My eyes flew open as the sound of banging suddenly came from some-where in the house. I slowly sat up and quietly got out of bed. I saw my mom and dad make their way into the living room. Dad whispers something to Mom and she comes over to me while Dad goes to see who's at the door.
"cariño, go pack a bag," Mom whispers once she reaches me.
I look at her confused even though she probably can't see me that good. "What? Why?"
She leads me over to my closet and hands me a flashlight. "I'll explain it later. Now hurry." I do as she says. I turn the small, blue flashlight on and start packing clothes into my camo backpack. Mom comes back with canned food, a can opener, a small thing of bread, and three water bot-tles. Once I get the plastic Walmart bag tied and placed in my pack, Mom kneels down and looks at me in the eyes. "Luna, you have to promise me something." Once she knows I'm listening she continues. "You're going out the window and no matter what happens, do not turn around. Just keep running. Get as far away from here as possible."
"Mamá, what's going on?" I ask completely confused. "Why do I need to run?"
"I wrote it down on a piece on pap-er. You can read it in the morning or whenever you want too," Mom expl-ains. She hugs me tightly. "Always remember that we love you. Your Mamá and Papá. Understand?" I can tell she's crying.
I nod uncertain and still very confused. "I love you guys too." Mom gives me a kiss on the top of my head. "Go," she says gently.
I swing the camo backpack around my shoulder and make my way tow-ards the window. I open the window and as I look back at Mom, there's a gunshot. I scream and cover my ears.
Mom comes over to me and grabs my arms, helping me back up. "Cari-ño, go. Now."
Tears slip down my cheeks as I climb out the window. I do as she inst-ructed, and run as far and fast as I can down the street.
Not that long after, not that far away, a gunshot is heard.

After a while my legs get tired so I stop running and walk instead. I keep my pocket knife out just in case I have to use it.
I walk down the street constantly looking behind my back to see if I'm being followed. How can such a horrible thing happen in such a beautiful island?
I live in Puerto Rico. San Juan, Puerto Rico, to be exact. It's such a beautiful island. There's always something going on in its streets. Fiestã's, anything. Fun never leaves the island. People also speak English here, too. Even though I could speak English with them, I choose Spanish instead.
I look around. What happens now? Where am I supposed to go? Did Ma-má right it down on the note? I know I should most definitely go to the police. But what if they don't believe me? They have to, right? Will they put me in foster care?
A thousand questions rush through my mind.
I feel something wet drop on my arm. I look at it then up at the sky. I smile slightly and let the raindrops cover my skin.

I've been so busy walking, that tiredness finally hits me once I sit down. I sigh as I lay down, using my arm as my pillow.
I scan the empty streets making sure no one's around, falling into a deep sleep.
