THIRTEEN
Something was vibrating against the wooden bedside table in Diamond's bedroom and she groaned as she ran her hand over the stand and looked for the annoying gadget that was her phone. It was fucking early o'clock in the morning, on a Sunday morning and she was annoyed that someone decided to mess with her sleep.
Mommy was the person on the line, trying to reach her and she knew better than to ignore her mother or she'd call the police thinking something was wrong with her baby, all because she missed a single call of hers.
"Hello mom." She answered, sitting upright in bed. "It's early..." she continued.
"It's early for what Diamond? Can't I miss my one and only daughter and call her? Is that early? Do you want me to call you when I'm dead and maggots are eating away my tanned and gorgeous skin?" Monica Barry spoke on the other side of the line and Diamond grinned and shook her head. That was her mother alright, ever the dramatic.
"Of course not, but it is Sunday, I wake up after twelve. You know the drill." Diamond yawned; knowing arguing with her mother was of no use.
"So you still don't go to church little girl? Your father and I are from church, it is eleven in the morning Diamond. Anyway... I have a reason why I'm calling. Why didn't you tell me that you have a boyfriend?" Monica asked; curiosity had filled her voice.
Diamond was confused, what boyfriend? "I don't have a boyfriend mom. After Marcus..." she trailed off not wanting to indulge her mother with the topic she has been trying to get her to delve in.
"Oh come on, Orlando York, the C.E.O of Logan Gold Towers. It is on today's New York Sunday time's gossip column. Your father bought the paper and your face was on it. You guys went grocery shopping together and apparently you were wearing his clothes." Monica for some reason sounded really happy. She was worried her daughter might lose herself and her mind since she broke up with her boyfriend of five years, the one person she saw a future with. But now she had a C.E.O in her life, and she could die in peace.
Diamond quickly got out of bed and went to retrieve her tablet and searched for the said article. "Oh sweet Jesus." She breathed, not believing her eyes. There they were, Orlando and herself walking side-by-side seeming happy and laughing at something. They really do look like a couple.
"Oh so you do know Jesus..." Monica said on the other line, sarcasm dripping of her tongue. Diamond groaned and put her mother on loud speaker.
"They say Orlando must really love me as not only am I out in public buying groceries with him, but I'm wearing his clothes." Diamond said out loud. "They know his clothes?" she whispered, unbelieving.
"Oh! So, he is your boyfriend and those tracksuits are his? Oh wow... why didn't you tell us baby?" Monica asked and Diamond buried her head in her hands, between the New York Times and her mother, she'd sure age before her time.
"Mom listen, I will call you back." She hung up on her mother and sat on her bed and went through the article. Sweet baby Jesus. What the hell was wrong with people, she thought, and how the hell do they know his clothes?
Nobody had a clue on who she was and so she was just named 'unknown girl'. How thoughtful.
She picked her phone and called Orlando, six times and the man still didn't answer his phone. How lovely. Diamond couldn't believe her day started off as badly like that. She was mad tired from last night. She, Daniel and Lisa went out and had a few drinks too many and she almost danced her life away.
She wanted to make it up to Daniel and when Lisa called and asked to see her so she invited both out and Daniel wasn't complaining. They danced together for half the time and he was so gentle with her and very forgiving. He promised to take her out for lunch, just the two of them today and she wasn't sure she could still make it. Her life was a mess at the moment. No lie, the New York paparazzi are most definitely searching for her, wanting to know who the hell is Orlando York dating.
Her phone rang again and this time it was Lisa. She must have seen the paper as well. Lisa was still working at the diner and was now the manger and she was turning the place around and it wasn't as crappy as before. Ollie and his wife have entrusted her with their shop and she was excelling. "I knew you'd be awake. Is this true?" she asked and Diamond again, sighed. Oh what a morning she woke up to.
"I... you know what Lisa, I'm just here surprised. I'm not dating the man. I told you, me and relationships are done." She told her friend.
"Really now? So those aren't his clothes?" Lisa asked, you could tell she was enjoying this.
"They are... ugh. I slept over at his and the following day he asked me to go with him grocery shopping. So I couldn't really wear the clothes I went to work with on Friday." She explained and Lisa laughed and told her she believed her. Diamond was glad, there was no way she was going to admit that she slept over because she was getting her guts shifted.
Daniel called just after twelve, asking if they were still on for lunch. Definitely, she was on for the damn lunch. She had to go out with Daniel so she could get Orlando out of her system and also remove the rumours, speculation that she was seeing her boss.
Dressed in blue tight skinny jeans that were ripped at the knees, and a white blouse paired with beige heels, Diamond was ready to go out with Daniel.
They went to a restaurant and sat outside, enjoying the atmosphere outside. Diamond was with Daniel but her mind was still pressed over the article. Why wasn't Orlando calling her back? Was he mad?
"So, I saw an interesting article today online. Are you seeing the dude?" Daniel asked a sour taste in his words. He clearly did not like what he read.
Did everyone in New York read newspapers and gossip columns? "Don't worry about that stupid article Daniel." She assured him but she spoke too soon.
As she finished her sentence, Orlando pulled up to her table, his eyes cold. He starred daggers at Daniel and he starred back at him, wanting to know why the man had the nerve to sit at their table and mean mugged him.
"What are you doing here?" Diamond asked, oh her heart was beating frantically. She was happy to see him; he looked distraught and very upset. Clearly he read the article and he wasn't pleased with it. But it wasn't her fault... she had nothing to do with it.
"We need to talk..." he told her, his icy glare sweeping over at Daniel whose mood has now changed and he looked pissed as hell.
"I know, but couldn't it wait until tomorrow? I am rather... busy." She seethed, her eyes looking at Daniel to show him what she meant by being busy.
"Man, just because you are some hot shot businessman doesn't mean you are going to gate-crash my date and ruin it. You need to back up and walk the fuck away." Daniel was quite disgusted with the man's behaviour and he needed to call him out on it. He fucking acted like the whole of New York City was owned by his family.
Diamond watched as Daniel spat angrily at her boss and he did not take that lightly. Sitting there in his suit and tie, the top button of his shirt undone, Orlando clenched his jaw, his eyes closing momentarily to open, reflecting anger.
"Your little date is the least of my worries. Jones called and he is ready to take my offer but his reasons include you and there is no way, I am going to let it slip." He told her being as vague as he could be so Daniel didn't catch on to what he actually wanted to tell her. "Listen, cut this short. We need to talk, now." He stood up and left no room for questioning. He didn't even want to hear her date's annoying voice. Diamond was his.
Diamond looked at the man's retreating back and damn if he wasn't sexy. She looked at Daniel and the mood has shifted, well at least they got to enjoy their meal halfway before it got ruined. "Daniel, I'm sorry to do this to you. He is my boss and my way of living is in his hands. I don't even know how he found me, but he did, which means he seriously wants to talk to me. So I will call you and make it up to you, I am sorry." Diamond apologized as she picked her purse.
"I get it; I'll wait for your call." Daniel assured her that everything was fine. She smiled and walked out of the restaurant and saw Orlando leaning against his car, looking like he was in the middle of a photo shoot.
"You're so damn cocky, do you know that? You don't snap your fingers and I jump." She lashed out at him as she approached him. His lips turned into a smirk, "But you are here now." He calmly replied.
"What do you want? What is it that we have to talk about?" she crossed her arms, the fire in her eyes turning him on. "And how the hell did you find me? Why didn't you call me? Did you have to ruin my date like you have been the entire week?"
Orlando looked at him and had no idea which question to answer first but he decided to answer them in order. "I want to talk to you about the article, I'm not sure how you're going to react but I hope you understand." He licked his lips and her anger was dissolving into calm state. "I have my ways of always finding people and I will always find you. I didn't call because I knew you were with him and I'm sorry for ruining your date, but I don't care." He finished and she was surprised that he deliberately ruined her date and wasn't even sorry about it.
"Why?" she asked, he knew what she was asking him but he had no answer for that. "Because I need you, I need your help. Get in the car; we are going for a ride."
Huffing and puffing, she got in the passenger seat and he closed the door after her and went to the driver's seat. Orlando had bodyguards that always drove ahead and behind him, always discreet. He was an important man in society and he needed to be protected, more especially since he owned casinos as well.
The entire ride they were quiet, only the radio keeping them company. They stopped at a construction side in some rich suburb just on the outskirts of the city. "Where are we?" diamond asked, taking his hands as she got out of the sports car.
"My house, I want to have my own house..." he replied her. Instead of buying an already built house, Orlando decided on designing his own dream house.
"Looks... like it's going to be nice. Tell me why are we here...?" Diamond was growing impatient. She didn't agree to leave her date to watch as men and women built a mansion. It was Sunday, she needed to relax.
"Why are you in such a rush? Eager to go back to your little date?" he asked, annoyance coating his words.
"No, it's Sunday. I want to relax." She rolled her eyes. "I was having a relaxed time, eating my first meal since last night." She huffed. Oh she was mad.
Orlando didn't know how else to ask her what he meant to ask her. "So my father called me to his house, livid as hell. He wanted to know why were you wearing my clothes and if I realize the consequences of my actions. I reassured him nothing was going on but he told me not to lie to him, but I lied still. He can't know about us... in the midst of that, Jones called and said to me he didn't realize I wasn't a bachelor who changed women like he is changing underwear. He was pleased with the article and he said he would entrust me with his hotel... since I have a woman in my life." He finished and Diamond couldn't wrap her head around that.
"What are you saying?" she asked.
"I am saying... no I'm asking you to help me keep up with the charade until that hotel is signed under my name."
And he dropped the ball. What do you think of Orlando? How do we feel about what he has done to Daniel?
