FIFTEEN
The minute Mr York senior's almighty voice boomed in Orlando's office asking to speak to his son alone, Diamond ran out, cheeks flushed. The man scared her to death and if they hadn't been pushed up against the door, only god knows what the old man would have walked on. She wasn't ready for anyone to see her kiss someone, let alone Orlando's father catching her with his son's tongue down her throat. He'd most definitely order for her to be fired on the spot without as much as notice.
"How was your first day at work?" Diamond asked Janelle who was riding in the elevator with her. It was knock-off time and the ladies were heading out. It has been a very busy and rough day for Diamond. Orlando was with his father all day and she couldn't even get to talk to him alone as they left to have dinner and talk some more. Business, he had disclosed and left her, saying he'd see her tomorrow.
"It was busy, very busy. You know I always wondered what it was that happened in such companies, now I know. I can't wait to put my feet up." She replied, although she expressed fatigue, Janelle was happy with her job, the pay was beautiful she wouldn't trade it for anything. It was better than being unemployed, at least now she could have a living and start seeing her friends and pay when they go out instead of sponging on them.
The ladies talked as they walked out to catch a cab and they were surprised when they learned they lived in the very same building and the same floor. "Okay, this is crazy. Who knew?" Janelle was excited over the realization. She'd now have a friend at work and at home. It was like covering two babies with one blanket.
They shared a cab to their building and they walked together inside. "Not to be forward but can I get us take outs and we get to know each other?" Janelle asked, she was a little shorter compared to Diamond.
"Thank you that would be really nice. I'll open us wine?" she asked and Janelle shook her head. "I don't drink; juice will do if you've got any..."
Diamond almost screamed her lungs out when she found Daniel sitting at her door. Janelle had turned to the left while she turned to the right and rounded a corner to get to her apartment. She wasn't expecting to find someone outside her door, sitting like a lost person who had no more will to carry on.
"Hey, sorry to scare you Diamond. I was waiting for you and I just almost fell asleep." He confessed. Diamond couldn't understand; Daniel lived on the upper floor, if he wanted to see her he could have just turned and came back a little later. Not to squat outside her apartment like some creep.
She unlocked her door and allowed him in. "That's very weird really. You could have called or waited at your own apartment." she told him, drawing the curtains as it was already dark outside and took off her shoes and her hair tie, letting all loose.
"You never called." He mentioned, occupying the love seat, his one leg on top of the other. "You said you will make it up to me after your boss ruined our date." He sounded pissed and he had a distant, sad look in his eyes.
Diamond felt sorry, the man was completely off her mind. It was only yesterday that their date was ruined; she didn't think she had to call him very early in the week to reschedule or apologize.
Diamond had no idea what to say to him, it wasn't like at the moment they could still talk about them seeing each other often, she has committed herself to be another man's little girlfriend, just for a deal to go through. She wasn't even looking to date, even if Orlando didn't need her help.
"How about we order Chinese food and pick up where we left off yesterday? I like you and I like listening to you. Your voice is angelic." Daniel said, his eyes sparkling with some sort of happiness.
Diamond laughed at the mention of her voice being angelic. The raspy voice she had going on was far from being angelic. "Yeah right. My voice is angelic... please don't lie." She sat on the couch facing him.
Daniel was offended that what he regarded as a compliment was taken as a joke. "I am serious, this is not a joke." He deadpanned and Diamond was taken aback by the hostility in his words.
"Geez, I was just joking man. If you find my gorilla voice angelic and cute ayyy I won't stop you. Feel free and compliment me boo." She grinned and he looked at her before a smile broke on his face.
He fished for his phone about to order food. "Wait, Janelle said she's coming with food. Sorry." Diamond stopped him from getting more food.
"Who is Janelle?" he questioned for some reason Daniel was a little possessive and Diamond saw through him.
"A friend, listen Daniel... we need to talk about us and whatever it is you want from me." Diamond began but the panicked look in Daniel's eyes stopped her. What was wrong with him?
"You aren't ready to date? Or you are already seeing someone?" he asked.
"I am in a thing; I don't know what it is. I mean I don't want to be in a relationship. I am just helping someone and as soon as it is done, probably next month, I will be free but that doesn't mean I want to be in a relationship. I can't trust anyone with my heart again." She confessed. She wanted to be upfront with him so he doesn't call her a liar or think she led him on. She wanted none of that, she didn't want to be like the guys, lead a girl on, only to cheat on her or dump her for somebody new and somebody 'fresh'.
"Well... I see." Daniel said. "Can we be friends? I promise to understand... I just enjoy your company." He confessed. Diamond had no problem with that, the man was nice, a gentleman at most but she still didn't want to be in a relationship with him. The whole trying to flush Orlando out of her system with him was something she couldn't go through with. It just wasn't her. She wasn't going to use the poor guy just so she could forget about her boss while knowing she didn't want either one of them.
"We can be friends Danny." She smiled at him and he broke into one of his cute grins. Daniel was a handsome man, first time you look at him you'd think aw he is handsome and as you get to know him, you will see a whole lot of cuteness. He was cheesy, easy going and just pretty chilled.
As they sat there, just talking about random things, Janelle came through with enough food to feed all three of them and still leave some untouched.
Janelle thought it would just be and her new-found friend but Daniel wasn't bad, she just couldn't shake the vibe that he was really into Diamond even when they had told her they are just friends.
Daniel left shortly after, leaving the girls to themselves.
"I don't mean to be forward..." Janelle said, sitting on the floor, a cushion beneath her for comfort. She was still finishing up her dinner, eating at a snail pace. "That man doesn't see you as a friend." She finished.
"He was asking me out but I turned him down. He asked to be my friend instead and he is a nice guy, I couldn't say no. He will get over the crush he has on me... eventually. I hope he does." Diamond replied. She knew very well what Janelle was talking about, but she just thought since they agreed to be friends, he'd look her differently.
"Mhm... well you better hope he does. Because if he doesn't, he is going to get dangerous. He has this crazy look in his eyes when he sees you smile. It's creepy." Janelle mentioned and focused on her food while Diamond brushed her off.
"You're paranoid and crazy. Leave Danny alone, this is not some life off CSI New York."
Should Diamond be worried about Daniel? Or Janelle is indeed just paranoid and seeing things that aren't there?
