The Two New Misfits

Ray opened her eyes to an unfamiliar room, dark, empty, and oddly cold. She shot her hand out for her gun but only felt something soft. Bed sheets, a pillow, a blanket that had been kicked to the side during the night.

She sighed with relief while her memory caught up with her tired mind. The tower. She was in Austin's room, where she was safe with-

The other side of the bed was empty. She pushed herself up, her body arguing in favor of sleep, and wandered out of the room, finding her way easily to the living room. The TV had been turned off and she could hear her brother lightly snoring on the couch.

Lily was sitting on the floor in front of him, staring down at her hands curled up in her lap. She didn't look up when Ray approached and sat next to her, humming in acknowledgment. "What are you doing out here?"

"I just wanted to make sure, you know, that it's really him," she said gesturing behind her towards Austin. "That yesterday was real."

"Unfortunately I think that guy going to hurt us was real," Ray snickered, trying to ease the tension in her sister's face but Lily only scrunched up her face and bit her lip. "It'll be easier now. Family can get through anything," she said more gently.

Lily silently took her sister's hand and squeezed it. Ray reciprocated and smiled. Sitting there felt...wierd. Four months didn't sound that long, but they'd spent that whole time out in the woods, always on guard and ready to fight. No real protection except the few others around them, a deep unnerving fear ever present that she was going to wake up and her sister would be gone as well.

Now being in an actual building, floors up with the sounds of electricity and water, and knowing others were safely elsewhere...it almost felt normal again.

"What do you think he did?" Lily suddenly asked, voice too quiet in the empty open room.

Almost. "What do you mean?"

"Austin said he's done some things he's 'not proud of'. I'm...worried about what he means." She drew her legs up closely to her chest, setting her chin on her knees. "He's still the same as he was before but also isn't."

Ray sighed. "Yeah, I know what you mean. Maybe he'll tell us one day."

"He might be too scared to. It might be really bad..."

"It can't be any worse than what he did at the beginning." She felt Lily's hand go stiff in her own. "I hope he knows we don't blame him for that."

"Should we bring up? Talk about it?"

Ray shook her head. "I don't think so. We just got him back, let's just try and figure out our way here. Besides that one guy, the rest of them seem nice. I think we'll be okay. Plus, Austin said he isn't normally like that, so..."

Lily smiled, letting herself breathe. "I don't feel like sleeping in there tonight. It feels too empty, I guess."

"Hmm, I got an idea. One second." Ray got up and left, coming back moments later with the blanket from the bed. She and Lily joined Austin on the couch, the three of them laying mildly uncomfortably next to each other.

Ray leaned against one couch arm with her legs up on Lily, who sprawled herself between the two and laid her head on Austin. The three siblings slept somewhat peacefully, content knowing they were together again.

(Austin out here making me miss my siblings, I don't appreciate it-)
