Ferris Wheel Takeover
Five go karts sped along the street, heading straight for the beach. Blurred colors flying by the dull buildings surrounding the bright, lively beach. Wheels rolled along the pavement cut off right onto the pier, screeching to a stop on the wood. "We're here!"
Bri led the way to the stalls at the end, skipping along with Colin talking animatedly right behind her. Austin followed, carrying a wide-eyed Ray on his back. Seek took up the rear, checking behind him for signs of zombies.
"Sooo why are we here?" he asked, scanning the beach.
"We need to finish securing this place. Just in case moving is our only option after all this." Austin bounced Ray up more securely on his back, smiling when she giggled.
"You can put me down now, Austin. I didn't think you'd actually give me a piggyback ride over here."
"Honestly, if I didn't do it, I would've gotten Seek to."
"What?!"
While the others were checking the minimal probably empty storage in the stalls, Bri wandered over to the ferris wheel. She jumped over the fences and went over to the control panel, taking out her wrench eagerly. Five seconds later, the door was open. Ten seconds after that, she figured out how the thing worked. Thirty seconds after that, she hit a button on top and the lights dotting the outer rim blinked to life.
"Hey guys! Come look!"
Ray stepped out from a stall and gazed up in awe. "Whoa! You got it working so fast!"
"That doesn't surprise me," Seek sighed. "She could fix a broken sculpture if it had wires in it."
Austin rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "That's nice, but we probably shouldn't turn the music on. It can be pretty loud and we don't want-"
What sounded like gears underneath the ferris wheel clicked, and whirled around, buzzing noisily until cheery carnival music started to play.
"-that. Bri, can you turn it off?"
Bri stared at the wheel's foundation, face scrunched up in consideration. "I'd have to get inside there and to do that, I need to get under the pier."
Austin groaned. "Alright, come on. Let's go and get you in there. We're in mutant territory, we really don't want freaks showing up now."
"Uhhhh, guys." Colin backed up away from them, fear streaked across his face. "It might be a bit too late for that."
They all turned around. A large horde was emerging from the streets, drawn in by the carny tune and smell of brains. Most of them were normal zombies, while others were taller and lankier. Their legs were crooked sticks, with hands and feet stretched out like monkeys', dragging their disfigured limbs along the sand.
Colin pulled out his gun and aimed it towards the horde. "What do we do?"
Austin glanced at the railings next to them, briefly considering having them all jump into the ocean. But the last thing he wanted was to risk the horde following them in and finding out the mutants could swim. Plus that didn't solve the main problem of getting rid of them.
He gritted his teeth and pulled out his own gun. He began shooting and the others followed suit, taking down the front row but barely making a dent in the second before they were already at the stalls. "Get on the ferris wheel!"
Seek drew back, still shooting, while pulling Ray with him by the arm. They clabbered onto the first car and slammed the half door closed. He pulled the lever and the gears started to squeak as they were forced to move for the first time in months.
As it carried them away, Bri grabbed Colin's arm and pulled him over the fences. They ran for another swinging car, jumping in just as it started to rise back up. "Austin, hurry!"
Austin took a few more shots before turning and high tailing for the ferris wheel. Footsteps hurried behind him and he pleaded that none of the freaks had mutated to be able to run faster than the living.
He jumped into a car and swiveled to close the door only to meet face to face with one of the mutants. It opened its mouth and kept opening it until it was a foot high, its jaw hanging to its chest. It outstretched a gangly hand out towards him and Austin rammed the end of his gun into its head. It reared back and he slammed the door closed.
The Misfits all watched in horror as the front zombies dug their hands into the metal supports and began to climb. Their feet scampered like bugs as they set their sights on the teens. Bri tried to lean over her car to shoot, but the rim of the wheel was blocking the way.
"They're coming up the support beams; we can't reach them from the cars! Who built this thing like this?!" Bri yelled indignantly.
"You can write a complaint later. For now, we can't let them get any closer."
Colin leaned next to Bri, narrowing his eyes at the metal bars. "I got an idea!" He slipped his gun onto his back and climbed up onto the seat. Gripping the bar connecting the car to the wheel's rim, Colin stepped off and immediately swung himself to the side. The ferris wheel continued to move at its slow pace, letting him calmly cling to the rim.
Seek stuck his head out from his car. "Colin! What the hell are you doing?!"
"Don't worry! I got this!" Colin took a deep breath and stood up slowly, keeping a hold on the bar. Their car was lowered to the side and he took the opportunity to leap to the wireropes. He stumbled on the landing, yelping and reaching up to grab the wirerope above him.
Like a tightrope walker, he stepped one foot directly in front of the other across. Along with the wheel, the wirerope started to slant upwards. He tightened his grip and planted his feet firmly with every step until he made it to the center.
He dropped down and wrapped his legs around the bearing. With the support beams right below him, he bent over the sides, switching back and forth to shoot down the zombies desperately climbing their way up towards them.
Meanwhile, the rest of the horde crowded the entrance. Hands grabbed onto the metal and attempted to climb inside with the nonexistent brain cells they had left. They surrounded what car was nearest, sticking their body parts inside easily and clawing at the seat.
"We need to stop the ride!" Seek yelled. "Otherwise whoever's at the bottom will get overrun!"
"Which will be happening soon," Ray said warily. Her and Seek's car was at the top, heading towards the pier where the horde was waiting impatiently.
Seek cursed under his breath. "How good is your aim?"
"Uh, decent?"
"Can you shoot the control panel?"
Ray bit her lip and leaned over the side of the car, nodding her head. She took aim and fired at the control panel. The bullet hit the surface and sparks lit up, but nothing changed. "It didn't do anything."
"Try hitting inside."
"But I can't see- wait!" Ray swung her legs over the car side, balancing herself on the teetering edge. "Hold onto me!"
"Why are all of you like this?" Seek groaned but took hold of the back of her shirt, bunching up the fabric in his metal hand. Ray leaned forward and hooked her foot under their car. She hovered over the air, 264 feet high, as the wheel took their car further.
They reached exactly in between the top and the farther side of the ferris wheel and she leaned farther. Seek held on tight as she raised her gun and shot into the inside compartment of the control panel.
The bullet landed, sparked the wires inside, and the wheel groaned to a slow stop. "Yes!" Ray shouted, pumping her fist in the air and Seek sighed with relief. He pulled her back into the car and patted her head.
With the wheel stopped, the teens were stuck where they were but far enough from the ground. Ray and Seek were the farthest on the left side, Bri at the top, Colin hanging from the centre wireropes, and Austin on the lower right side.
The mutants shoved their way to the front of the horde to climb, their mouths dropping open unnaturally low and letting out groans that chilled them to the bone. Bones cracked with every move they made. Austin watched the freak mutants make their way up the supports, a few grappling for the wireropes trying to get to the cars.
He looked up at the other Misfits. Colin and Bri were making good work of the mutants, but more and more were coming. All the gunshots must have been attracting more. 'Damn it.'
Austin climbed out of his car and pulled himself onto the wireropes. Mimicking Colin, he steadied himself before jumping up to grab the ones above him until he was level with the ground. He quickly ran along it, holding on for balance. Colin veered his gun, letting Austin reach him, and helped him move into place on the bearing.
Colin wiped the sweat from his forehead, panting. "Man, I've never been so happy to see you. This is a lot more than before."
"It doesn't look like more are coming from the city, so we just have to deal with what's left."
Colin nodded. "Right. Let's move back out of their reach."
They shifted back onto the centre on the ferris wheel. Colin attached himself to the upper wirerope, using the centre as support, while Austin kneeled to stare down the gun's scope. Like a shoot the duck game, they shot the freaks off point by point. Hitting their heads for a dead kill or their hands to make them fall and splatter amongst the horde.
"This is kinda fun!" Bri called out over the gunfire. "We should make a game out killing gummy bears!"
"Ooo, seconded!" Colin agreed, knocking a freak off with the end of his gun.
Seek and Ray mowed down the freaks on the ground, aided by Bri knocking those that were using the rim as a leaping pole down on top of them. Their moans and groans were soon overshadowed by the gunfire, a deafening but relieving change.
Once the horde was thinned out, Colin and Austin felt confident enough to climb down and take out what was left. They helped the others climb down, convincing Bri not to just jump from the top, and the Misfits collapsed side by side against the pier railings.
Seek knocked his head back. "We're never turning that thing on again."
"Agreed."
