Ch 73: Cheater?
You were wandering around outside for food. Not hunting or anything. You just couldn't find any food in your house.
With Garroth gone with Azura, you wondered how you had survived without him. He'd know where to get some food... You weren't in the mood for eating at the dining hall or Kawaii~Chan's. That left no where else in town.
It just wasn't the same... You sighed. Maybe you should go to Kawaii~Chan's. Cake could fill the emptiness in your heart. On the way to the cafe, you stopped at Zoey's house to ask if she'd come with you. You filled Zoey in on Azura's arrival and her situation with Garroth, so she agreed to come.
"Thanks, Zoey. You're a really good friend." You said glumly.
"Don't mention it. And come on- stop being so overly dramatic. You are a strong independent woman who don't need no man." Zoey sped up her pace and passed you, then spoke to you while walking backwards. "And anyway, ever since you got into a relationship, you barely spend any time with your friends anymore."
"What do you mean? We're spending time right now."
Zoey exhaled through her nose. "We're only spending time right now because your so called 'boyfriend' could be cheating on you." She said in a casual tone. Upon realizing what she said, Zoey felt a pang of guilt.
You were taken aback at her statement. "No, he's not. I trust him." You said uneasily. The words may have been coming out of your mouth, but you were unsure if you believed them. "And that was uncalled for."
"I-I know it was... But if Garroth wasn't busy right this second, would you still be hanging out with me?" Zoey asked with an unnatural calmness.
You huffed in response.
"That would be a no." Zoey looked at the stone pavement before turning her attention to straight ahead.
"Alright. Point taken." You were submissive to Zoey.
"Whatever. That's just been on my mind lately... How about we forget it and talk about your feelings?" Zoey gave a smile in your direction, but you could tell it was phony.
"How about we don't talk about that?" You said. The worst thing you could do was focus on the situation at hand.
"How about we do?" Zoey pressed further.
"There's no reason to." You shook your head. Maybe there was.
"That's a lie." Zoey took in a deep breath. "I care about your well-being, and if your feelings are on the line, believe me when I say that Garroth will pay."
Your response was automatic. "He's faithful. How do you think he's come such a long way as a guard? It's because he's loyal to the people he cares about." You gave yourself a boost of confidence.
Zoey nodded her head. "Yeah. But don't hesitate to dump-"
"-his sorry butt. I know." You smiled, although happy was the mask you shielded yourself with, not something you were currently feeling.
Zoey touched your arm to focus your attention onto something else. "We need to take your mind off of him with some cake. Just take deep breaths and don't worry. Kawaii~Chan's cafe is right there."
"Sounds good..." You said, your voice lacking any confidence.
Zoey grabbed your arm and froze, not letting go. She started squeezing the life out of you, and from the look on her face, she must have been biting her tongue.
"Zoey, you're cutting off my circulation. What is it?"
"Oh, nothing... It's nothing." She said through gritted teeth. "It's nothing." You tried prying off Zoey's hand from your arm, but her grip was too tight.
Zoey looked to where she was sucking the life out of you. "S-sorry." She let go immediately. "____, stay here. I'm going into the cafe. Alone."
You tried looking at the cafe to see what was wrong with it. You saw nothing out of the ordinary. "I'm not staying here. What is so important that you almost amputated one of my limbs?"
Zoey looked at you with the most sympathy she could before hissing towards the cafe. "That pig!"
"What?" You were still confused. Zoey started her march forwards, but you grabbed her arm to stop her. "Zoey! You're not leaving me out here. Tell me what you see."
Even though it was difficult, Zoey spilled what was on her mind. "Garroth is in there with another girl. Probably the one you told me about." She blurted out. Maybe it hadn't been that difficult.
"Are you sure?" You asked in disbelief. "It's not just some other guy that happens to look like him, is it?"
"Fine," she huffed, "take a look for yourself."
You rolled your eyes, but still stepped forwards to peer through the small window. The window was positioned to give a perfect view of one of the dining tables. Inside, surely enough, Garroth sat directly across from Azura at one of the little pink tables. He hated those little pink tables. In fact, that was one of the reasons he normally avoided the cafe.
Come on. Garroth never wanted to go to Kawaii~Chan's with you, but apparently he didn't mind going with Azura.
Why didn't Kawaii~Chan immediately tell you that her ship was being ruined?
Zoey took note of your silence. "Are you okay?"
You weren't sure how you felt. "Maybe it's not what it looks like... They're probably talking strictly business."
"Judging from the way he's looking at her, I don't think they're being very professional." Zoey convinced.
"No, he's just... concentrating on what she's saying..." You stepped up onto your tiptoes to get a better view. "We should watch him though, just to make sure."
"I say we confront him now for the cheater he is, but whatever, it's your decision." Zoey drawled.
You smiled like the boy whose mom had mixed up picture day with pajama day,
then shook your head and resumed your attention to the window on the cafe. Azura reached her hand out and rested it on Garroth's arm casually, but he slowly snaked his arm further away from hers until she was no longer touching him.
"See?" You flickered your eyes to Zoey, then back to the window before resting your thumb on your bottom lip to think. "But I still don't understand why they're here of all places."
"So you admit to the situation being a little fishy?" Zoey concluded from your statement.
"I guess..."
Zoey took the triumph, basking in the glory of being right.
"This is still my love life on the line." You whispered anxiously. To draw Zoey's attention away from the little victory dance she was doing, you brought up another subject. "Don't you think it's weird that we're spying on him like this?"
"Nonsense. This is completely normal." Zoey said.
"Sure it is." You out a finger to your lips to silence Zoey. If it were more quiet, you could concentrate better. Azura playfully nudged Garroth's shoulder as if he had just made the best joke in the world. Not okay. They were supposed to be talking about professional matters, but you could she she was trying to entice him by flirting. It was all in her body language.
Kawaii~Chan suddenly opened the front door and greeted you. "____~Chan! Do you want your regular? Kawaii~Chan saw you staring through the window hungrily next to Zoey~Chan, so she wanted to help you." As the words were rolling out of her lips, Kawaii~Chan bounced.
"That's not why she looks hungry..." Zoey muttered.
