Ch 58: Operation: Win Her Over

*(A/N) It seems like a lot of you didn't enjoy the Diary Entries, so I'm going to start posting them only every once in a while. Just remember, the less time that passes in the book, the longer you have to wait in real life.

You sat positioned strategically behind a bush. Garroth lifted his head up and looked over the hedge, but you quickly pushed him back down so that he wouldn't give your spot away.

"We've been training Travis for days. You don't want to jeopardize our work by exposing ourselves to Katelyn, do you?" You whispered to him.

Garroth shook his head. "Just watch. Travis is about to make his move."

You moved around a few twigs in the branches to get a good view through the bush. Your arms might have been getting scraped, but at least you could watch your project in action.

Katelyn's back was facing Travis, and she hadn't seen him yet.

Travis took a deep breath, then walked around to face Katelyn's front side. You noticed a huge improvement. He ignored the butt.

When Katelyn saw who was in front of her, she turned around and looked away from him.

Travis stood by Katelyn's side, not looking at her face. "So, Katelyn, do you need-"

Katelyn turned around again. "Was that a fly?" She asked, looking back and forth through the air.

Travis placed a hand on Katelyn's shoulder, but she swatted him off like a bug.

"I'm sorry." Travis said, looking at the ground. "Kateyln, can you please look at me?"

Eye contact. Check.

You felt like the proud mother of her creepy little son. But that would make Garroth the dad. You momentarily looked down, trying to keep the thought out of your mind.

"We've taught him so well." Garroth whispered.

"Can't you see I'm ignoring you, butt head?" Katelyn stomped her foot and started walking off. Katelyn left Travis with utter rejection.

Uh oh. Not good.

"You have beautiful eyes..." Travis mumbled.

Katelyn hadn't heard, and she continued to march off.

Travis looked defeated as he trudged his feet to his next destination. Which could be anywhere.

You couldn't pop out of the bush and comfort him just yet, because he hadn't exactly known you were in the bush.

Garroth sat back and looked at you. "We did great." Garroth saw your disapproving expression. "I mean... There was no flaw in Travis's behavior. It was all Katelyn."

You took your head out of the bush and replied to Garroth. "Travis isn't getting anywhere with Kateyln if she doesn't forgive him. If she keeps this up, we're going to need a way to make her notice Travis."

Katelyn's POV:

Since Travis wouldn't leave me alone, I was going to have to get away from him.

He's not very good at taking hints. Why can't he see that he's a big bozo?

I. Like. Jeffory.

Can't he just respect my feelings?

I slammed my door shut behind me and continued towards my couch. I hugged a powdery blue throw pillow to my chest, unknowingly squeezing it tightly like a stress ball.

I really want to throw this "throw pillow" right now.

I felt a pair of hands massaging my shoulders. "Baby, what's wrong?"

I hadn't realized how uptight I had been. Jeffory's hands really relaxed my muscles. "It's just the usual. Nothing too big. I-I just can't stand him." I released the pillow from my death grip.

Jeffory made an "mmm" sound, nodding his head as if he understood exactly who I was talking about.

I peaked my head up, looking into Jeffory's eyes. I don't know what it was, but something about those green wonders made me feel even more relaxed. "Where's Abby?" I asked, looking back down again.

Jeffory stood up straight and rounded the couch corner, taking a seat in front of me. "Don't worry, Zoey's watching her." Jeffory inhaled sharply, then looked me in the eyes seriously.

I knew I wouldn't like what he was going to say next.

"Katelyn, I've been meaning to talk to you now that we're alone. There's something on my mind." Jeffory looked at the rug.

"What is it?" I asked coolly, although I was really nervous. Were we breaking up?

"It's about Abby's well being. Our, well being, actually."

Oh my Irene. There he goes, talking about us.

Jeffory noticed my attitude. He tipped my chin up. "Hey, hey. It's fine." Jeffory held onto my hands. He sighed. "I got a message a few days ago. We're back on our feet. Abby and I got a house in O'khasis. We're leaving."

Second Person:

"And how are we going to get Katelyn to like Travis?" Garroth looked back and forth to make sure no one was around before he stood up.

You stood up too, then said, "Travis is adorable! How will we be able to get Katelyn away from him?" You had joked about it to play everything off like it was fine. But you really doubted Travis's ability.

"And I'm not?" Garroth asked with a pretend pouty lip as he started walking.

You followed, but when the words sunk in, you stopped walking. Of course he was, but you couldn't tell him. You definitely didn't want to see the satisfaction in his face when you choked up and told him what you thought. "No comment." You said, then resumed walking.

"I'm hurt. But Travis is too. I think a have a plan on how to get Katelyn to love him though. She has to forgive him if he gives her special treatment and gifts, right?"

"I think I see where you're going with this."

Garroth put his hands out as if he was explaining a new concept. "Girls still like flowers, right ____?"

"Yes. We could get Travis to pick some for her." You said, thinking of every possible place you could remember exploring.

"And I'm sure she'd love a foot massage..."

Katelyn's POV:

He's what?

I blinked a few times.

Jeffory's grip on my hands became stronger. "I know that it's" -He choked out his next statement- "going to be tough. But there's a solution."

The tears stung the back of my eyes. There couldn't possibly be anything that could make this any better.

"I want you to come with us."

Second Person:

***

You were in Travis's house. He had explained to you and Garroth how it went with Katelyn.

He was acting like he wasn't sad, but you knew he really felt let down. Travis and Garroth.

Garroth looked at Travis. "Travis, you can get Katelyn to notice you if you can do things for her without having to be in front of her."

You looked at Garroth. "We need to ease him into these next few steps! His heart is broken right now, don't you see?" You scooted closer to Travis. "Travis, I know you feel bad, but Katelyn didn't know what she was saying. She'll come around." You comforted.

Garroth looked Travis square in the eyes. "Don't listen to ____. You just need to forget about the rejection. We have a new way to 'win her over'. "

"Garroth, that's not what he needs to hear right now!" You argued, but Garroth ignored.

"Travis, what chore is Katelyn going to do tomorrow?"

Travis looked back and forth between you and Garroth, confused on who to listen to. "Um... She's going to be bringing clean water to the mess hall."

Garroth nodded. "I don't care how you know that, so I'm just gonna keep talking. Make sure you do it before she does. And don't expect her to return the favor. She probably won't because -well, let's not think about that right now... On the bright side, she'll probably hate you less."
