63: Blur of Feelings

You had still been wondering if this was all real or not. The sun was nearing the horizon line and the day was almost over.

Looked like you were still alone.

Some part of you had hoped he would show up, because you didn't want to be the first one to come crawling back. You weren't overly-attached. Nope. Not at all.

Once you finally forced yourself off of your bed, you started to brush through your hair. Even though there was no point, you had still did it. It was something that could occupy time.

Right when the all sunlight was gone, you heard a knock on your door. It was surely Garroth now, although it was really late. You gulped as you opened the door, facing a certain elf.

She came inside and stopped in the living room. She placed her hands on her hips. "Why would you do this to me?" She demanded.

It was Zoey.

Your mind could barely comprehend what was happening. One minute no one was there, the next Zoey showed up.

Zoey. You had forgotten about Zoey. As long as you didn't say anything about it, then she would be fine. She didn't have to know.

"What's wrong?" You asked, opening your arms wide to give her a best-friend-bear-hug. Something was obviously bothering her.

When Zoey didn't reply and just shook her head at you, you blinked in confusion. "Zoey, what's wrong?"

"You should know." She said with a trace of bitterness. She took a deep breath, trying to release tension from her voice. "I worked up the courage to go see him, but apparently you beat me to it."

You were shocked. "Wh-what do you mean?" You couldn't hold up for much longer.

Zoey's voice gave a remorse of despair. "You're just playing clueless now. I saw you."

You swallowed hard, letting Zoey continue. She paused. "Don't expect me to believe you didn't see me either. Answer me this. I never did anything to you, so why'd you hurt me like that? I have no chance anymore. Now it's you and Garroth. ____ and Garroth."

She knew. You had kissed Garroth. Or Garroth had kissed you. You didn't have a positive answer for that one.

Maybe Zoey didn't need an answer. If she wasn't happy for you, then maybe she wasn't fit to be your friend.

"Yes?" You asked, getting a flashback of the first real conversation you had with Zoey.

"Do you know how that felt? Seeing you there with him? My heart shattered. I felt the pieces fall to the ground."

"Wait- this isn't about-" You started, but Zoey cut you off.

"It's not just about some dumb boy. It's more than that. I finally made a new friend, only to find her stabbing me in the back. That is what this is about."

You felt the tears form in your eyes. "Zoey, I'm so-"

"Save it." She cut you off again. "Why would you purposely go behind my back and make a move on the guy I like? You knew I liked him. You couldn't respect that, could you?"

Nausea overwhelmed you. It came so quickly that you felt like you had been body slammed. You clutched your head.

It wasn't Azura. It was Zoey.

"It wasn't like that." You said stubbornly, with a hint of disrespect. It's like she had been trying to push your buttons.

Couldn't she just see that everything isn't all about her?

"Then what was it like?" She demanded.

You took a deep breath. "I-it wasn't on purpose. I was shocked. Garroth was the one who made the move."

Zoey sat down and tapped her foot. "So you're not at fault here? You expect me to believe this was all Garroth?"

She's so selfish.

Sitting down across from Zoey, you felt the world come back into focus. Somehow you couldn't bring yourself to put the blame on Garroth and only Garroth. "Look Zoey. I tried to say I'm sor-"

"But you're not. Those are only words. That won't fix anything. That can't change what I've felt. That can't make everything all better." Zoey glared at you.

"Zoey, if you'd stop being like this, maybe I could explain everything." Today's lesson was that stubborn and stubborn don't mix very well.

"Being like what? Explaining to you how badly you screwed up? How terrible it made me feel?"

You couldn't stop the facial expression you knew you were making. It was hard to fight it. You tried hiding it, but the scowl just kept recurring, tugging at your lips when you talked. "You feel this terrible over a guy?"

"No. We discussed this. I feel terrible because of you. You led me to believe I could have my happily ever after with Garroth. But you were just leading me on. You really don't care about me, do you?"

It felt like Zoey was doing all of the talking, but you couldn't change that because she'd always cut you off. "But I do care! And maybe if you'd let me explain, then you could see that not everything revolves around you!"

Zoey gasped, but quickly covered her mouth. "Fine then. Go on. Explain."

You took a deep breath before starting your confession. "I knew that you liked Garroth, but I did too."

Zoey rolled her eyes at this information, but still continued listening.

"Believe me, I was not trying to hurt you. That was far from my intentions. You see, I accidentally confessed my feelings to him. I didn't even know I had said it. Then Garroth and I sort of..." You trailed off.

"Made out." Zoey finished for you.

You blushed. "Um, yeah."

"Yeah. Sure. You know what ____? I have somewhere to be. I need to go." Zoey got up, turned her back to you, and walked out the door like you never even existed.

A tear rolled down your cheek when she was gone. You may have been angry before, but now that the source of the anger was gone, it was filled with overwhelming sadness.

You laid on your back on the couch. What else was there to do? You were too put down to walk anywhere else.
