Hey There Grandfather
(Trying out this kind of formatting. Might change later. Because this is an AU, I'm betting you none of this will happen. Well, maybe one will happen, but the others won't.. hopefully.)
This takes place in 2024. Justin and Bryan married each other, (this is NOT because of the shipping. This is only due to the fact that this relationship isn't at all friend-zoned unlike Justin and Colin, nor is it in any way a father-son bond, unlike Justin and Bubba J.) and the zombie apocalypse is still going on. Bryan and Justin rescued two children and technically chose to become their parents: Ava and Micah. Ava is 15. Micah is nine.
Ava woke up in her home, drenched in cold sweat- another nightmare. Justin opens the door and sits on top of her bed, as he normally does. Ava sits up, sighs, and tries to rub her eyes as Justin begins to explain their plans for the day. "I had an idea, I'm sure you would like. Because Bryan is taking care of Micah, I had plans to take you to see your grandfather.. would you like that?" Justin asked. He didn't schedule any concerts for today, he told Ava yesterday. It was a dad and daughter bonding moment. Ava nods. Maybe she can see what his grandfather was? Though she knew he was long gone, Ava believed Justin still had a burning passion for him. She didn't want Justin to forget his father, like Ava did.
So Ava spent the majority of the day taking care of Micah with Bryan while Justin helps with the Misfits. Teaching him how to do basic talking, self defense, and a small bit of gun shooting. Ava tied her black hair with silver tips into a ponytail as she began feeling sweat drop from her neck and onto her white tank top. Ava chuckled as she watched Micah successfully reload his gun. She also helped Bryan with planting crops for the field, despite hating anything to do with gardening and vegetation. She tried to pick at the cotton, feeling the harp thorns rip through her dark blue jeans and give her scars across her face. Ava grew tired towards the evening, as the sun offered no mercy for her. Her light brown skin tanned in the sun as she bent down to pick the cotton. When she returned back, her skin was completely sunburned and scarred. However, Ava refused to use any bandages, as she thought they'd be one too many for her. As soon as Justin came back, Ava put on a simple jacket and tied her converse shoes.
As they walked through the forest, Ava couldn't help but to feel her skin prickle with fear. What if zombies were lurking in the shadows? Ava slowly reached for her gun, but Dad simply held out a hand, telling her to stop. She saw a small tear roll down his cheek. She looked to see what he was crying about and saw a gravestone: "Colin ""Princey"", died in attempt to save Justin and the the Misfits from the Colonel. Justin watched him die." Ava didn't know what to say. She just took Justin's hand and held onto it, as well as interlocking it like how they would normally do. Ava's dad looked down. "I knew him since we were kids. We'd used to play Overwatch and Halo with him.. but he's gone now." He muttered. Ava felt like a ghost. Maybe Colin's ghost was watching over the two right now, preventing them from being tackled by zombies. Justin and Ava hesitantly moved on, until they reached another grave. Justin looked at it with fear and quickly walked away, but Ava stopped to examine it: "BrIck. Died in a murder attempt." Ava knew who Brick was: the guy who forced Dad to leave his own home. The guy who made Dad suffer. The guy who stole everything from Dad. Ava kicked the grave as hard as she could. Who had the audacity to even give him a grave?! Justin looked back and ran over to her. He put a hand up to his lips, motioning for Ava to stop and be silent as the two moved on. Serves you right, Ava thought. If Brick was to hate Dad, he will have to hate Ava just as much. "We're here.." Justin mumbled as Ava stepped up a rock.
Unlike the other graves, this one was decorated in lights. Ava saw the guitar placed right beside the grave. Her grandfather's guitar. She approached the grave with Justin and bent down. She felt a fury of emotions; pain, anguish, and a small bit of relief. Justin told her he passed away due to an illness. Ava knew that letting him pass would cause no harm. But she couldn't bring herself to accept that. Another tear rolled down Justin's cheek. She then noticed he wasn't wearing his usual jacket. Instead, he wore a purple shirt with paint splashed all over it, along with a dark purple vest. He had on black gloves with a blue trim towards the top of the gloves, as well as some dark blue jogger pants with some paint splashed on those as well. Ava then realized he was wearing Colin's clothing. Her and Colin would sometimes pass each other and have a talk. Colin treated Ava like he was her uncle, taking her out to get some food at times, and teaching her some techniques when she was shooting. So when she saw Justin return home alone and in tears one day, she got the memo: Colin passed away.
Ava felt the grave with her hands and read the words: "WILLY RAY STEWARD." She turned to face Justin. She could feel the anguish in his eyes as she examined the guitar. It was obviously old, but that never mattered to Ava. She wondered whether or not it was tuned. "I'll go defend this place from zombies. Feel free to stroll around and examine the others." Justin said somberly. When he walked off, Ava yanked the guitar away from the stand and began playing a few notes. She noticed how the instrument was finely tuned and sighed. Justin was shooting zombies until he heard a sound coming from the grave. He looked to see if there were any other zombies, before he turned to face the graveyard. He saw Ava sitting against a tree, playing some familiar chords. He then heard her sing quietly, as if it was only for her grandfather. "Hey there grandfather, you be good and don't you miss me, three more years and I'll be done with school and you'll be making hist'ry like you do." She sang quietly. Justin then remembered how similar this was to Hey There Delilah, except for the fact that she changed a few words and made them her own. A tear rolled down Justin's cheek. He taught her so much. After she finished singing, Justin trudged over to her and smiled. He was proud of her for getting some words out.
When they got to the farm, Bryan was standing there with a plate of teak, mashed potatoes, and corn. He smiled at the two, knowing where they were. "Dinner's in the kitchen." He said, his accent being surprisingly not too noticeable. However, some words Bryan says still slur, especially when he sings Ariana Grande music. Ava nodded with a smile and walked in. Meanwhile, Justin and Bryan stood outside to have some quiet time together. As Ava walked in, she saw Micah sitting at the table with a grin on his face. His face was blistered horrifically. Ava ran to him, knelt down, and felt his face. "Did you get into another fight with those kids again?" Ava questioned. She was determined to find out why Micah was blistered. She won't let him be Mr. I-don't-know. Micah looked at the ground and nodded. "They were makin' fun of Dad and Daddy for being together." Micah muttered, trying his best not to cry. "I won though! I did it!" He shouted, the tears now visibly running down his face. "Micah.." Ava muttered. She hugged him tightly, closing her eyes. Micah hugged back. Ava would sometimes treat him like a mother, something she was known to do ever since the "Car Incident." Ava hugged him tightly, making sure she would never let go, something she should've done at the grave.
After a good few minutes, Ava let go of Micah and stood up. "I gotta do a grocery run." She said simply. The two exchanged eye glances before Ava tied her shoes and left. "You be good and don't you miss me." She muttered as she walked off.
