Orange Jello
Taehyung sits on crisp white sheets, the smell of sanitizer fills his nostrils. His brother, Seokjin is softly talking to him, Taehyung just nods along not really listening. The humming of monitors drowns out Jin's voice and falls alongside into the humming and beeping. Taehyung stares at the brown tray on his lap, Orange jello is a white plastic container. Taehyung pokes at it...why couldn't it be strawberry? Taehyung smiles as he remembers the time he and Jungkook were in the first grade.
Taehyung had gotten jello in his lunch like always, but his mom had gotten him orange jello, Taehyung didn't have anything against jello. But, Orange jello was a different story...it reminded Taehyung of crisp linen sheets and lavender Lysol, late night trips to the hospital and the smell of death in the air. Taehyung hated hospitals all they brought were bad news.
So, he had sat alone at the lunch table staring at the cup, the scent of Tangerine giving an acidic twist in the air.
Taehyung always sat alone. That was until a boy came up to him.
Jeon Jungkook.
He was a year younger than him, Taehyung only knew him because one day he had bumped into him and instead of ignoring him (which if what people often did,) the younger smiled at him flashing his bunny smile and a mouth spilling out apologies. That was the day Taehyung fell for Jungkook, quite literally and figuratively.
"Wanna t-trade?" Jungkook had stuttered, snapping Taehyung out of his train of thought.
his face turned a light shade of pink, "I mean it's just that you seem unhappy with th-"
"Sure." Taehyung cut him off and flashed him his boxy smile. Taehyung had then motioned for Jungkook to take a seat next to him.
"here!" Taehyung then exclaimed, "I'll give you a kookie! Since you're Jungkookie!"
Jungkook's bubbly laughed filled Taehyung's heart.
Jungkook healed Taehyung in ways a hospital couldn't.
And... that was the start of their friendship.
If only Jungkook was here now.
But, He wasn't.
Jungkook was off with his other friends.
And Taehyung was left off in a hospital with a cup or orange jello.
You would have thought they were meant to be forever.
You would have.
In all honesty, Taehyung thought so too.
Oh, how wrong the boy could be.
Jungkook had always been good looking, but then puberty hit him like a truck. Jungkook suddenly had tons of admirers.
Jungkook promised never to change.
He tried out for the baseball team and made it in. Suddenly all the Jocks were his friends.
Jungkook promised never to change.
But, times change and Jungkook did too.
After school hangouts became unusual for the two of them.
Jungkook rarely replied to texts.
Taehyung keep bothering him though
"God Taehyung stop being so damn clingy!" Jungkook had yelled to him in the hallway in front of his varisety friends.
He ran off crying, was he a burden? Was he forever going to be all alone?
He thought he found someone that would look at him and see him as a person.
Not a sickly looking boy that kept his head down.
But, someone who saw him as Kim Taehyung.
Kim Taehyung, who loves strawberries and hates orange jello.
A strong boy who fought of a sickness that almost killed him when he was younger.
Not a weak scrawny boy that seemed to tremble on his feet.
Jungkook comes back with a mouth full of apologies.
Taehyung smiles and forgives him.
Friends fight right?
It was his fault anyway, he was being too much of a burden.
Jungkook still pushes him away.
Maybe he means it or maybe he does.
Taehyung just wishes Jungkook would at least for one day look at him with his full attention.
He wishes Jungkook would just run back to him and they could just re-live the good old days.
Days full of youth and health.
Full of laughter and strawberry kisses.
But it's too late now.
He wonders if Jungkook will be sad when he realizes it's too late because Taehyung is sick again.
He's trying to hold onto something as he sits in the hospital bed.
He knows his time is coming.
The way his heart stutters in his chest and how his head seems to squeezes itself.
But it doesn't really hurt anymore, the medicine they gave him got rid off all that pain.
the world is hazy and Taehyung is just a blur among it.
Taehyung sends a text
Taehyung: Hey Jungkook...
Jungkook: Taehyung I'm busy
Taehyung: I need you, please.
Jungkook: Well I don't right now, I'm busy Tae...I don't have all the time
in the world for you okay? I thought you said you were gonna stop
being so clingy.
Taehyung feels a tear slipping from his cheek.
That's all he needed was Jungkook.
Becuase maybe Jungkook could fix this horrible feeling in his chest.
Maybe Jungkook could come in a whirlwind of apologies and it would be fine.
Because Taehyung loves him.
Maybe Jungkook could sweep him off his feet and kiss him and Taehyung's sickness would go away.
Just like fairy tales.
But this isn't a fairy tale.
This is the reality.
And it's too late for Jungkook.
So, Taehyung sends one final text, a quick little goodbye of sorts.
Little does Jungkook know that that's the last he will hear from Taehyung.
Jungkook would regret shoving his so-called best friend away.
He won't even get to say goodbye.
He won't get to give him one last hug.
One last kiss.
There would be no more late nights staying up and watching movies.
Not like they did that anymore.
Becuase Jungkook had pushed him away and took him for granted.
And, now it's too late.
It's too late and Taehyung dies in a room surrounded by the smell of cleaning supplies and death hangs in the air mingled in with the untouched jello in his hands. Taehyung dies as his brother holds him in his arms.
Jungkook wishes he could go back and change everything.
But it's too late.
