Broken Trust
(two months later)
Ever since Steve told Tony about the whole 'dying' thing, their bond has grown even closer. They had been dating for eight months now and seemed inseparable. There would always be some people who would hate them together but the majority of the world didn't seem to mind at the least. They felt like they could truly be themselves without any pressure at all. They would still sometimes see paparazzi taking pictures of them together when they were out but they honestly could care less.
It had been two months since Steve had gotten shot and Tony had died. When Fury found out that Steve told Tony, he was pissed off but got over it because he originally knew Steve probably couldn't handle the lying. Maria Hill and Coulson were furious that he did that but also got over it quickly because the fact that he was Captain America and that they made Tony sign a contract to never speak of it or anything related to it.
Phil's team has been in search for Nigel ever since he escaped the Stark Tower the day Steve got shot but they haven't had any luck on finding a trace yet.
---
It was a late night evening and Steve was laying on the couch reading a book. Tony had just gotten home from Stark Tower doing late night work. As he shut the door from inside and threw his keys on the kitchen counter, Steve lowered his book to see Tony smiling at him. "What?" He asked with a confused smile. Tony just walked over and sat next to him. "Nothing. You just look so cute reading." He replied. Steve just rolled his eyes and sat up. "Well, I'm really tired so I think I might go to bed." He said with a yawn stretching his arms out. "Yeah me too." Tony replied standing up. They went into their bedroom and got ready for bed. They got in the covers and wrapped their arms around each other. Tony instantly fell asleep and for awhile Steve just lay there listening to his heartbeat while he thought about Nigel. He eventually drifted off into sleep and rested his head against Tony's.
It was 1 AM in the morning when Steve was awakened by his phone. He unwrapped himself out of Tony's arms and turned around to his beside table. He rubbed his eyes, blinking a few times, and picked up his phone. He winced at the brightness of the screen and answered the call. "Um, hello?" He said yawning. "Captain, we've got him. Shield Headquarters... now." It was Phil and he hung up the phone. Steve immediately threw back the covers and got up. He put on a shirt and a pair of jeans and belt. He grabbed for his brown jacket and slipped it on. He almost forgot about Tony when he spoke up, "Steve? Where are you going?" He said sitting up in bed and rubbing his eyes. "They've got Nigel." Steve simply replied, looking for where he set his phone. Tony suddenly got up and searched for clothes. "What are you doing? I'm just going to go alone." Steve said glancing over at him.
Tony just gave him the stare that said, 'are you an idiot'. "Steve, like hell I'm staying here. He killed me. I'm going, whether you like it or not pal." Steve just gave him a slight smile and they both walked out. "Besides, I'm a way better driver than you." Tony said as they got in the car. Steve just smirked and they drove off.
When they arrived at Shield, Tony parked the car and they both walked inside. "Do you know where we're going?" Tony asked Steve as they walked into the elevator. Steve pressed the base level button and nodded to Tony. "So what are you gonna do to him?" Tony asked. Steve just turned to Tony, "I'm going to kill him."
Tony knew how worked up Steve was so he just stopped talking. As they hit the ground floor, they walked out and Steve led Tony down the long hallway. He eventually stopped at the glass door realizing that he didn't have authorization to get through. "Shit." He said under his breath. Tony gave him a confused glance when they heard Coulson behind them. "Need a hand?" He asked as he walked in front of Steve and scanned his eye and card. He typed in the keypad code and the door opened.
Steve and Coulson walked alongside past the Shield agents and rooms while Tony trailed behind looking through doors at the recaptured bad guys. He didn't know this was even in the building. Coulson led them down one hallway and stopped at a door at the end. Tony bumped into Steve, distracted from all the rooms and agents. "He's in here. He's been saying your name Tony, ever since we caught him. He's in pretty good shape- so feel free to ruin that." Coulson said turning to them before letting them in. Steve and Tony just nodded and shut the door behind him.
The room was mostly dark with one small lamp hanging from the ceiling. There wasn't a desk, like in the other rooms. Instead, they saw Nigel strapped with metal bars, wrists, waist, and ankles to a wall in chains. He looked up upon their arrival and laughed. Steve felt the rush of anger and hate run through him and he walked over and slammed his hand against Nigel's neck and held him against the wall, choking him. He squeezed harder and harder. "Steven!" Steve suddenly let go and stepped back taking a deep breath. Tony walked over and looked into his eyes. "I know what this means to you, but you need to calm down. We need him." Steve just gave him an angry glance and looked the other way.
"Awe that means so much Tony. You need me? Thanks for telling your boy-toy to lay off. He's a pretty strong guy. I can only imagine what he's like in be-" Nigel was cut off short when Steve punched him across the face making his nose bleed. "Well that's not very nice." Nigel said sniffing his nose.
Tony crossed his arms while Steve just turned his back towards the wall. "Why the hell are you doing this." Tony said with a glare. "Because- well at first, we just decided we needed you out of the way so we were going to kill you. Then, the whole Steve Rogers and Tony Stark thing happened and we had a reason to keep you alive.. a useful weapon. We were going to use you for a kill-switch, Project Centipede, test subject, but our plans were interrupted when your little Captain here, invaded our test base." Nigel replied.
Before Tony knew what was happening, Steve had whipped around, pulling out a gun, shooting Nigel in the heart. Tony was taken aback by what Steve had done. Also the fact of where he got the gun from. "Steven! What the hell did you do that for!?" Tony yelled as Steve dropped the gun. "Where did you get that gun?"
Steve just looked at Tony, "I snuck it from the drawer at home just before we left. I just couldn't listen to him talk anymore Tony. I couldn't." He said looking down. "We could've used him!" Tony exclaimed. He couldn't quite tell how he felt, angry but relieved. "Tony, you know what he did. He deserved it." Tony just crossed his arms and looked away. He couldn't think of what to say.
"Well this is all very touching." Steve and Tony glanced over at the body Steve had shot directly in the heart. Nigel was bleeding but it had stopped and looked unharmed as if nothing had happened. "What... the hell.." Tony said stuttering back. "Yes yes, he just shot me. So why am I alive? Let's just say John Garrett wasn't the only unique guy you've met." Nigel said clearing his throat. "Impossible." Tony simply said and rubbed his eyes.
"So Steven, when were you planning on telling him?" Nigel said to Steve.
Tony gave a confused glance back and forth between them. He saw the corners of Steve's eyes instantly turn read- like they always did before he cried. "What?" Tony said in confusion.
"Go ahead Steve, tell him the truth about you." Nigel spoke again.
Steve was starting to breath a little heavier than usual and took a few steps back from Tony, as if he was scared of him. "Steve what?" Tony asked walking towards him. Nigel just took a deep sigh and spoke up, "I guess he 's not going to tell you so I will." Tony looked back at Nigel in confusion.
"Tony, Steve has been playing you. He's a double agent who sells everybody out. He's been giving me and John Garrett information from you and Shield. He's a good little agent. Does what he's told. I see why you like him. We don't even have to worry about activating the kill-switch."
Tony froze. He turned back around at Steve and saw him huddled down in the corner. He turned back to Nigel. "No. Steve would never.. No!" He said and punched Nigel in the face, spliting his lip.
"You're right. I lied. It's not just the kill-switch that we put in him. His entire brain is being controlled. Even if he tried to escape or anything, we can control him. He's our human robot. We played him pretty convincingly, don't you think? We had him gain Fury's trust to learn all the secrets of SHIELD. The only thing we haven't messed with, was his emotions. So he actually does love you- if that makes you feel any better." Nigel said laughing.
"You son of a bitch." Tony said swinging at him again. He turned back to Steve letting things sink in. He's been controlled to do whatever they tell him too. What he says and does have all been against him and he can't do anything about it.
"Fury can fix this." Tony said walking over near Steve. "There is still good in you. You're a fighter."
