Chapter 81
[Harry]
I squint at her. I think if I look hard enough she will wake up. I am angry, very angry. My eyes slide from her forehead to her chin, looking at her eyebrows, her symmetrical nose, the freckles on her cheekbones, her mouth and then I repeat the same path.
"Mr. Styles, you know that there are chairs if you want to sit, "I heard Mrs. Green and nodded without looking away from her.
"Thanks, but no."
"The girl is alright."
"I know."
"She will not wake up even if you keep looking," Mrs. Green said and I'm sure she's smiling.
"I know."
"Why are you looking at her so much?"
"I don't know."
"Is she your girlfriend?"
"No, she is not."
More silence and I don't move. I hear the sound of pages of paper, the way she uses the computer keyboard and the chair creaking against the floor. Mrs. Green is boring and I know she wants to talk but I'm too busy.
"I have a banana that I brought home, I don't know if you want it."
"Not now, I'm busy," I replied and my eyes still are on her.
"Harry, you're like a statue. No, actually, I must admit you look like psycho. 15 minutes looking at the girl, give her a break. "
"I refuse," I shook my head. I heard her heavy sigh and I think she stood up from her seat.
"I'll go to the bathroom, if she wakes up give the glass of water and those cookies, okay?"
"All right."
Mrs. Green leaves and I am alone with her. My left foot hits the ground repeatedly. I am anxious, nervous and angry.
She squeezes her eyes and a few wrinkles appear on her forehead. She groans and I frown, waiting. Her eyelids flutter open and her eyes focused on me.
"Lucy! What's wrong with you? "I growled.
"Yes, hello to you too," she whispered and closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry," I said immediately and she opened her eyes confused for the change of my voice. "Do you want water?"
"Please."
I helped her sit on the stretcher and handed the glass of water. She drinks small sips and my hand rubbed her back as I stare at her as I have done these past 15 minutes.
"Where are my glasses?" I pulled it out from my pocket and handed it to her. "You shouldn't be here, Harry."
"Then who would take care of you?" I inquired, frowning.
"Someone else," she shrugs. "Where is Cassie and Mandy?"
"The teacher didn't let them come."
"Oh I see, so just you?" Lucinda looked at me incredulously.
"Yes, because I'm cool," she looked at me waiting for the real answer. "I was the first who rushed to help, you should know that."
"Thank you," she sighed and looked down.
"I think you owe an explanation."
"To you? I don't think so,” she smiled without looking at me.
"To the whole world, Lucy," is the only pathetic response that came to mind because she is right.
"Fine, this goes for the whole world: I didn't have breakfast today, I woke up late. I forgot we had test today but I didn't think I would pass out, "she shrugs.
"You are weak."
"Wow, thanks," she said sarcastically and I gaped.
"I said it in a good way," I answered quickly.
"Is there a good way to be weak?" She rolled her eyes.
"Yes, um," I tried to think of an answer quickly, "yes, because that means someone should take care of you."
"Yeah, my mom."
I guess she's in a bad mood. I looked away and sighed.
"I was worried, we were all worried."
"I'm sorry?" She answered without importance and her attitude causes anxiety in me. My foot hits the ground and I remember Mrs. Green told me I had to give cookies to her.
"Want something to eat? You need glucose. "
"Yes, I guess."
She bites her cookie and my eyes never leave her face. Lucy looks at me a few times but looks away once she realizes I'm staring at her.
"Harry, would you stop staring at me? It's intimidating, you know."
"Really?" I smiled.
"Yes," she growled but I don't obey and kept looking. "Do I have something on my face?"
"No, no, you look perfectly fine."
"Where is Mrs. Green?"
"She went to the bathroom, she let me stay here so I can take care of you," I smiled and she just nodded.
"Harry, could you please give me my bag?"
I obeyed her order and handed her backpack. Lucy reaches into her pocket once I can see her hand I notice she has an inhaler.
"What?!" I almost screamed. "Why do you have that?!" I asked scared.
"Yes, Harry, I'm sick," she pressed the metal canister and inhale the dose and I watched in awe.
"Since when?"
"I found out last week, I had an asthma attack and my mother took me to the hospital."
Now I understand why I didn't see ser here on the school for at least 2 days.
"Lucy, I'm sorry."
"It's fine, I can live with this."
"Wait, asthma can kill?"
"If I don't take care of myself, then yeah," she nodded quietly.
"Lucy, you can't do physical activity and you fainted this morning, what's wrong with you?!" I tried to control my voice because I am very angry.
"I can exercise but not too much!" She frowns and a few wrinkles appear on her forehead. "And about today it was just because I didn't have breakfast and asthma was not involved—"
"But you never know it's dangerous!" I scolded her and she looked down.
"It's not your problem, Harry," she murmured.
"I'm back! Is everything all right?" Mrs. Green smiles at us.
"Yes, everything is fine," I replied folding my arms.
Mrs. Green talked about what happened with Lucy and gave her some indications. My eyes never leave Lucy, I’m so mad at her. Sad and angry, she shouldn't be sick, especially when asthma is forever.
"Shouldn't your mother give you paper or something to justify you? I mean, you can't do a lot of physical activity," I asked as we left the infirmary. I grabbed her backpack and threw it on my shoulder.
"Yes, I have it but I still haven't shown it."
"Why not? You are risking your life, you know. "
"Yes, yes, I know, Harry!" She grunts and rubs her hands against her face.
"Why are you in such a bad mood?"
"Because I have a chronic disease!"
I was speechless. Lucy keeps walking and she is almost fuming. Now that she said it I can understand her, or at least try.
"Hey, Lucy, asthma is not so bad—"
"Not being able to breathe is not so bad, right?" She smiles sarcastically and her new mood never ceases to amaze me.
"Can you hear me for a moment?" My hand rested on her shoulder and we stopped walking. "I can understand you're grumpy and angry with everyone because you're sick but this kind of thing happens every day, you're not the first nor the last but people move on because that's the only option. Lucinda, is not as bad as you think, with all the technology and treatments I'm sure you'll be fine, also it could be worse so you should be thankful that is only asthma. "
She looked at her shoes, nodded silently and then her fingers tucked her locks behind her ear. Since she didn't answer I decided to go forward with my speech.
"Lucy, you're so much more than you think, you're brilliant, you're good and you're a strong girl but sometimes you don't believe in yourself. You have to be positive; I want you to be positive and to always keep your head up. It's just a silly disease; don't let it take control of your life, I'm pretty sure you're so much more than that, you just need to believe in yourself. Plus you have lived with it all your life without knowing it and you've done well and I know you can go ahead with no problem. And you're surrounded by people who love you, everyone will support you, you're not alone. "
She closed her eyes and breathed slowly, I watched her almost fascinated. Her nails scratched her forehead and then she looks back at me.
"I can't believe I'm gonna say this but thank you."
"Really? What did I do?" I raised my eyebrows, confused.
"Everything you said, thank you, Harry."
"Oh, um, you're welcome."
"Mom told me I had asthma and that I have to use the inhaler and everything will be okay, just that. Mike did the same and Madison doesn’t talk to me. Marcel gave me a whole speech about asthma and what makes to my body. Mandy and Cassie said sorry and that while I use the inhaler everything would be okay. No one has told me so many words of encouragement as you have done and I think I needed that, I needed to hear it from someone else but me," she spoke and I think her voice and eyes threatening to betray her.
"Hey, Lucy, don't cry, come here," she tried to slap my hand but I managed to dodge it. Somehow I manage to hold her but she doesn't return the gesture. "I swear nobody cries like you, Lucy," I smiled. “Not even Gemma when she was a little girl.”
"Idiot," she pinched my nipple.
"Auch, enough!" I whined and grabbed her hand. "I can't believe you pinch me," I confessed speechless and I rubbed my nipple with a pout. Lucy just laughed and I decided to do the same.
Just for a moment if we laugh hard enough or if I stare at her I believe that we can forget the world and all the cruel things that happen in here. Her laugh can definitely cheer you up and it's adorable.
I think there is a spark, electricity.
"God, I've missed you, Lucy," I blurted out suddenly and we both stopped.
Holy shit, fuck, dammit, what did I just say?
"Lucy, Harry!" We shudder at the voice but without breaking eye contact. Emily comes out of nowhere and hugs Lucy.
Lucinda is still staring at me speechless and my throat is dry.
"How are you, Lucy? We were all worried about you," Emily tells her once she pulls away.
"I'm fine," she murmured and looked away, finally setting me free from her eyes.
"You have to eat, breakfast is the most important."
"I know. Today was an accident.”
"I'm glad you're okay, really," Emily sent her a last smile and then looked at me. "I've been looking for you everywhere, Harry, you could have called or sent a message."
"I forgot it, we left the infirmary and we started walking."
"No problem."
Lucinda is looking at me again with a frown and I do the same.
"Why are you two so quiet and staring at each other? Is this some kind of competition? "Emily asked curious.
"It's nothing," Lucy answered. "I have to go to class."
"Lucy, it's lunchtime," Emily replied.
"Fine, then I'm going to lunch," she said without smiling. She turned around and started to walk a few steps but then stops and returns to us. "My-my backpack, Harry."
"Oh, yes, sorry, her," I handed it to her and she snatched it from me and left.
"Lucy is weird, but I like her, she is nice," Emily said once we're alone.
"I don’t think she is weird,” I shrug.
"And what were you laughing at?"
"I just said one of my jokes."
"If she thinks your jokes are funny then Lucy is super weird, your jokes are the worst," she smiled as we walk.
"I'll delete you of Facebook," I joked.
"Yeah, sure, and I will delete your penis."
"That was not funny," I said and she laughed.
"I think it was."
"I have been kicked like 4 times, I'm traumatized for life."
"Poor boy," she said before grabbing my hand. "Anyway I don't want to talk about your balls, I have some news."
"About what?"
"About Eric, I spoke with one of his friends and now I know the truth."
"The truth about what?"
"Harry, what the hell? Come back to earth, okay," Emily barked. "I knew he was playing with her, I mean, not playing, I don't know how to say it but the thing is that I know the truth."
"Just leave him alone, no one cares about Eric."
"Well, I do. We were all friends and he was an idiot with us. Maybe you don't want revenge or do something about it but I do. "
"If you plan to threaten him, it won't work."
"I don't care, that's what I do best," she shrugged.
"Why do you want to do this?" I asked, raising my eyebrows.
"Look, Eric tried something with me a while ago and I didn't want, it was not a pleasant experience. I'm not saying that it will happen to Lucy but I don't think he's a good person at all, so why not do something about it? "
I sighed and nodded. Emily is right about Eric.
"I like Lucy, and I hate you, so I want to help her."
"If you hate me, just leave me alone," I growled as we walked into the cafeteria.
I curse under my breath when she stepped on my foot with her boot. I wish I could do the same.
"There is a thin line between hate and love, have you heard that?"
"Whatever."
"Next time will your balls."
"My balls don't exist anymore," I said and got rid of her grasp.
"Harry, what's wrong with you? Honestly you are in another world and lately you're spending too much time with your sister."
"What the hell? It's my sister!" I replied impatiently.
Some people look at us and I just want to scream at them to go to hell.
"I don't know since when you care about your family."
"I care about Gemma and Charlie and if you didn't know that then you don't know me that well."
"Oh, shut up. I've known you since you had 16 years old, since you were a stupid boy with no personality. You ran to me because you wanted to be accepted. "
I cover my ears, pretending not to hear her and I stop in the line for lunch.
"You ran to me because not even your own sister loved back then, no one really, you were completely-"
"What about you? You were with Taylor, a lot older than you and not to mention he sells drugs and probably guns and who knows what else. A 16 year old girl should not be with a guy 5 years older than her. How sick, right? But nobody cared because your mom was too busy to worry about you. "
I grab her hand before she can slap me.
"No, stop. Not everything is solved with violence, "I said softly.
"You deserve to have no balls," Emily growls and got rid of my grip.
"I said something very simple but you always want to argue, it used to be fun but not anymore."
"Probably is not that fun because you're 19 and you shouldn't be here, loser,” she rolled her eyes.
I keep a calm expression, rather a poker face. It doesn't hurt when Emily says that because her opinion is irrelevant, however, is horrible to remember Gemma's face or my parents face when they found out of my failure.
"Look, I could respond and mention your mistakes or your imperfections and we could go on for hours but I don't want to. Let it go, Emily, really. You can always fix things in other ways. "
"Well, whatever, eat alone you fucker," she growls, then walks away from me.

[Lucy]
"Lucy, your shirt, I, wow," Adam said as soon as I opened the door.
"You like it?" He nodded and I smiled.
"It's a great way to support your friend," he said as we walked to the car.
"Hi Josh!" I greeted his brother and sat back with Adam.
Josh laughed at my shirt. "Cute shirt, Lucy, you made it?"
"It was my idea."
"Lovely."
My shirt is blue and says: You go, Marcel!. I wanted to print Marcel's face on the shirt but I thought he wouldn't like and it was also more expensive so I decided to keep it simple.
"I hope he wins."
"What's the prize?"
"Money, as always."
Adam and Josh started a conversation. I pulled my phone out of my purse and I have another friend request from Harry. I smiled for no reason and I rejected it.
"God, I've missed you, Lucy."
The irrational smile faded from my face as soon I remembered his words. The memory makes me shudder. It felt real but it is not right. There is no excuse for what Harry said. He probably felt sorry for me, as always. That's the only answer that comes to my mind.
Just for a moment, again, I wished we were a normal couple just laughing and saying things that couples say. But that is as fake as all the makeup Emily has on her face. Not personal, but it's true.
Lately she has been kind to me, sitting with me in class and trying to work as a team to do the exercises together. She doesn't understand, I said I didn't want us to be friends but I think she doesn't care about my decision. I don't like to sit with Emily, I feel envious, not only for her great body but because she has Harry. She is laughing with him, she hugs him, spend time with him. The very thought makes me want to tear my diseased lungs.
"Lucy, we're here," I shuddered when I felt Adam's hand on my shoulder.
I turned off my mind and we're back in the real world.
"Yeah, let´s go.”
"Have fun, kids!" Josh tells from his car waving at us.
Adam grabbed my hand and leads us to the entrance. I tried to ignore his gesture and I think he is only rushing because he wants to see the end of the competition. We bought our tickets and I want to find Marcel.
"Lucy, do you want to eat something? My treat. "
"No, thanks. I'll go looking for Marcel, okay? "
"Fine, I see you in a few minutes."
I walked around and once I spotted Marcel I ran towards him and gave him a big hug.
"You are in the finals, I'm proud of you!" I kissed his cheek and pulled away.
"Your shirt is great!" He responded very happy.
"I love it, thanks for your support, Lucy!" He sent me a big smile.
"I would do anything for my best friend. If you win we can go to McDonald's with the boys. "
"Yes, that would be great but Harry invited us for a drink if I win, I don't know if you'd like to go—“
"What?" I furrowed my brows.
"I knew you wouldn’t like."
"No, is fine if you want to do it but still we can go to McDonalds," I smiled at my friend.
"Of course."
"Lucy, hi!" I heard Marcel's mother and she smiled when she saw my shirt. "How beautiful, I want one too!"
"Hi Carly, and thanks."
"I need a picture of this," she said while looking for her camera in her purse.
Marcel hugged me and I smiled and Carly took the picture.
"This one goes for Facebook, bigger smiles!"
Marcel and I exaggerated our smiles and Carly took another picture.
"Well, Harry, you're here just in time for another picture!"
The normal temperature of my body disappeared and I turned to him completely puzzled. He holds two cups of popcorn in his hands and a soda and he looks perfectly beautiful. He half smiled, he is certainly uncomfortable but he should know that I would be here for Marcel.
“Hi, Lucy—“
"What are you doing here?" I barked angrily.
"Couple fight?" Carly whispered.
"Mom, they're not together," Marcel whispered back.
"I, um, I came for Marcel," Harry answered.
"His mother forced him," Carly said watching her camera. "Today there is no time to fight, I want another picture."
I huffed feeling cranky. Marcel smiles tilting his head towards me and I do the same.
"Harry, you can't be next to Marcel, I want you next to Lucy," Carly said and I snorted.
Marcel made the peace sign with his fingers, Harry rested his big hand on my waist and I rolled my eyes when Carly took the photo.
"Lucy, my dear, you look like a demon!" Carly showed us the picture and both Styles giggled.
"I think you look sweet," Harry whispered with a smile, showing his dimples. Just for a moment my heart melted.
"Last picture!" Carly told us.
This time I smiled and again I felt Harry's hand around my waist. I'm glad once Carly took the photo.
We hear a voice over the loudspeakers announcing that the competition will start in 10 minutes. Marcel went with the other competitors and Adam joined us. Adam and Harry reluctantly greet each other and Carly looked at us and she is amused by the situation.
"Are we going to McDonald's after this?" Adam asked me and I nodded.
"Yes, but then Marcel will go with Harry to a bar."
"You wanna go?"
"Nope, we can do other things later."
"That would be great," Adam smiled.
The competition began and it will last about two hours, but there are still a lot of participants, I hope Marcel win.
"Lucy, I have something for you," I heard Adam and tilted my head to the side curiously. "I saw it and thought about you," he stretched a thin and rectangular gift.
"Why? Heey, it wasn't necessary. "
"I know but I wanted to do it."
I blush. He's sweet.
"You didn't have to."
"You deserve it," Adam shrugged.
I grabbed the gift and gently torn the wrapping paper, I read the title and I know what it is.
"Thank you, Adam!" I hugged him and then watched the gift. "Black Widow is so great, I really like it."
"I knew you would."
"You know, the other day I was counting and I have 100 comics and with this one I have 101 comics! I need a minute of silence, this is a great moment in my life," I looked at the ceiling to emphasize my words and Adam patted my shoulder.
"101 comics, that's incredible, Lucy!" My heart skips a beat when I heard Harry's voice. Was he listening to our conversation?
"I was not talking to you," I frowned and tried to look annoyed by his presence.
"I, um, I know but I heard it and thought it's really cool, Lucy," he said, scratching the back of his neck. He turned around and went back to Carly. That was weird, Harry looked like...nervous? No way.
Adam chuckled and I looked at him curiously. "What?"
"Lucy, the way he acted. When you were together he used to not be this way, he was a jerk, what did you do to him?" Adam chuckled looking at Harry and then his eyes returned to me.
"He was a jerk to you but it was not that way with me," Adam rolled his eyes and looked away.
"He looked like that guy that no one wants to talk," Adam said, and I didn't answer.
I crossed my arms and tried to watch the competition but Adam's words are glued in my mind. He may be right, I mean, Harry is acting different. At the beginning of our story he used to be an idiot and rude but then when we were together he changed, he was gentle, soft, he was fun and even romantic in his own way...and now I think and he is another Harry. A quieter and less explosive Harry, he has helped me on several occasions and has appeared at the right time.
I looked at him a couple of times, Carly talking and he giving short nods a few times. A hand in his pocket and the other with the cup of popcorn. His long fingers are always sliding down his hair or his forehead. He crossed his arms and I watched his muscles. I stared at the sea of tattoos on his arm and then I returned to his face. I like the headscarf he uses sometimes, it is something that doesn't fit with his style but it does look lovely on him. Harry smiled and from where I was I could see his dimples. I closed my eyes with my fingers itching to touch him. I just wish to come back to the beginning, at least for a moment.
"God, I've missed you, Lucy."
What if his words were true? What if he really meant it?
"Lucy, your phone is ringing," Adam gently shook my shoulder and I grabbed my phone.
"Hi," I answered without knowing who was.
"Hey Lucy, I know you're in the competition but I'm outside, I wanna talk to you."
"Right now, Eric?" I pressed my lips into a thin line.
"Yes, it will be short."
"Fine, I'll go now," I hung up. "Adam, I'll be right back, can you take care of this?" I gave Adam the comic and then walked quickly to the exit.
It is not difficult to spot Eric, tall, blond and alone in the parking lot next to other cars. I tucked some of my locks behind my ears and crossed my arms as I walked towards him. Eric was leaning against his car.
"What's up?" I said, I don't dare to kiss or hug or any loving gesture we have ever shared.
"Don't take it personally, Fray," he began. "We had a good time. You're funny in your own way, clumsy, and a great girl but this is not working. "
I bit my lower lip and nodded. "I know and I also know that we have differences but we can fix it," I shrugged. "We can be friends—“
"I don't think so," Eric shook his head and my jaw dropped. "It wouldn't work."
"You're not even giving a chance."
"I don't want to," Eric shrugged. "There's someone you can blame for all this."
For all this? I don't understand him.
"Tell me," I rolled my eyes, I already know the answer.
"Little Lucy, you know who, you dear and precious Harry."
Why Harry Styles is always involved in everything?
Hi! How is everyone? I had time today and I decided to write and also I don't know if I will update this weekend so at least this is something.
In case you wonder we are in the middle of the story. I'll cry when we get to the end, (we still have a lot of chapters, don't worry.)
Lots of love for everyone!
