JD x Veronica

Warning: Mentions of suicide, abusive relationships.

Fandom: Heathers (the musical, I didn't see the movie)

Well, first ship of this fandom and we start with the main official couple, apart from Kurt and Ram's parents, but they cut for a scene after admitting something about the summer of '83, they don't count. Get ready for me to tell you the whole plot and explain why I love them.

Well, you have to start with how they talk to each other for the first time in a deep way, and it's something wholesome, beautiful and... JD admits that he has suicidal ideas, family problems and that he uses slushies for emotional support. We started perfect.

When they really become a couple, it's in one night. Veronica, after throwing up on Heather Chandler, leaves, and before she ruins her school life the next day, she goes to JD's house and they sing an excellent musical number.

Now, the way I describe it, this doesn't seem like a healthy relationship at first, it's not, but we can see redeemable qualities that he has, for example, JD seems to genuinely like Ronnie, she's supportive. Watching the music it seems like a soft and wholesome relationship. Seems.

Later the next morning, Veronica goes to apologize to Heather but she humiliates her. That gives JD an idea: give her bleach and pass off her murder as a suicide. This seems like a joke. Then they accidentally give him chlorine. Thus begins a counterfeit note and a musical number.

After this incident, on the night after the funeral Kurt and Ram drunkenly try to abuse Ronnie and the next day they spread rumors of having slept with her. Jason shows that he believes in his girlfriend and goes to beat up Kurt and Ram.

Since he lost the fight, he decided to play a little prank on them: fill their faces with lead. But he told Ronnie that it was a sleeping pill and they would pretend they were gay and since it's set in the 80's that wasn't good.

By the way, I want us to stop for a moment and appreciate the "Ich lüge" bullets. They mean "I lied", JD lies about the Germans using it to fake their deaths, they lied about their deaths. It is brilliant.

Well, after this the relationship goes to hell. JD starts with his plans to blow up the school and clear up his family problems and making us hate his father more, Veronica convinces him to temporarily not hurt anyone but that doesn't work, so they break up.

After JD convinced Mom and Dad Sawyer that her daughter was mentally ill, he broke into her house and did an epic scene of emotional abuse set to even more epic music.

After this, Veronica fakes her own death, JD goes all sad to blow up the school, and she goes to stop him.

In the end Verónica fights him and JD realizes that what he did is wrong, he grabs the bomb he made, and sacrifices himself. His last words being "our love is God", and the last he hears... "Say hi to God."

Well why do I like to see them together even though JD is such an abusive and manipulative asshole?

Because they have an interesting dynamic, with Veronica trying to help him, JD being someone who wants to keep her in this idea of reality that she has (one where all those who have done her wrong are dead), giving the impression that it is an obsession based on legitimate feelings. And the wholesome moments of him are genuinely beautiful. And the growth that their relationship gives both characters, Veronica becoming more assertive at the end, and JD becoming more antagonistic and at the end noticing his mistakes. I love it.

By the way, there is a version where JD is female. There is a variety to choose from.
