idk what to call this

okay so it's this very specific idea where one person sees something online posted by someone and decides that that idea applies to every single person in that group. i have two examples that i've seen online, one on tiktok and one on twitter:

the first is a person in some random comment section on tiktok that said that it's bad to use this letter ت (a letter in the Arabic alphabet) as an emoji because it's insulting to Arab people. an arab person in the same comment section said they like when people use it bc it's cute. the original person was so convinced that it was insulting that they didn't stop to think abt other people--this is brainrot.

the second was on twitter, where someone (an american) was saying that it's rly insulting to american people when people from other places across the globe joke abt school shootings and stuff like that. i will say that school shootings are (very obviously) not okay and not good. personally, i've had experience. there's been bomb threats at my school, and a kid died from a shooting at one of my neighboring high schools, and there was another shooting at another school maybe two years ago. but also, it depends on the person! if my best friend died in a school shooting, no, i wouldn't want to hear jokes abt them. but that doesn't mean that the person who has no experience with them whatsoever would feel the same.

sure, it's good to be safe, but there are levels to it. if everyone always checked their words before they spoke or posted to make sure not a single person in the world would be offended or triggered by anything they said, the world would be a terrible place, and it would not be getting better.

it's not always good to joke abt school shootings--ofc not! but sometimes jokes can lighten the mood when you're in a very dark place. emergency room doctors have friends that they laugh with, because the things they see every day are so horrific they can't not have that outlet. laughing is good for the soul, and happiness is healthy.

okay another example that maybeee fits into this category is one i've mentioned before in this book, in my palestine chapter: a person saying that if you don't speak up abt palestine, you're a terrible person, which also translates to if you live in israel/russia/whichever attacking demonized country, you are a terrible person, which very obviously is not true and is not a good idea to be spreading. maybe it'd be called generalization? idk, that feels wrong. but this idea is not good, and should be stopped, although obviously that's not very possible with how far it's spread and is not going to happen anytime soon.

i'll make another chapter on brainrot, but this is a very specific thing that i just thought was so annoying.
