Chapter 21

It's going to be ok. It has to be.

Jude and Rutherford were standing in the front lobby waiting for the President's arrival. Rutherford was flipping through pages on his clipboard checking to make sure everything was in order.

Little droplets of spit spatter across the walkie as Rutherford barked, "Everyone better be in place."

Jude stood with his hands held together behind his back seemingly calm on this outside.

Breathe. Just breathe. Calm. You must remain calm. You're on a serene. Who am I kidding? I'm screwed. I'm dead. Kindra and Carly. How did I get into this mess? Why do I even work here? I'm a good person, right? I don't even know anymore.

The crowd outside had been growing since the early morning hours. They were all awaiting the arrival of the President and Jude could feel their anticipation oozing through the door. The security guards were all lined up at the sidewalk holding back the ocean of people all craning to catch a glimpse of the road. The mass went silent as a large caravan pulled into the area.

Jude could hear a chopper hovering above the building and caught a brief glance of the gunmen scanning the crowd cautiously. Several large black SUVs pulled into the facility and almost twenty armed men filed out of the vehicles. They lined up facing the crowd with their weapons at the ready; the crowd quieted. The gunman in the chopper put his finger to his ear and gave the all clear. A smaller cluster of vehicles pulled up to the front of the building as the other SUVs pulled out. Secret services agents exited the front car and walked to the limo in the middle. A large behemoth of a man opened the door to the limo.

A well-built, middle-aged man stepped out of the limo, raising his right hand in acknowledgment of the crowd. Seeing the man the crowd erupted into a roar of cheers as the man exited the vehicle with the grace of a gazelle. The man disappeared behind a swarm of men in dark suits who began walking in unison like a marching band towards the front entrance. As they came closer to the entrance a man in the front reached out his hand to open the door. With the door open the black suits parted like water giving the man between them a small opening to enter the building. Quickly entering behind the man the men in suits scanned the lobby for any unwanted movement before moving forward. The middle-aged man walked forward and reached out his hand towards Jude's. Duplicating the action Jude stuck his hand out to accept the man's handshake.

"Mr. President, it is an honor."

The President took his opposite hand and covered their shaking hands and replied: "The honor is mine, Mr. King."

The President's words sent unwarranted chills down Rutherford's spine as he fidgeted trying to stay calm. The President shook Rutherford's hand and said "Good morning and your name is?"

"Good morning Mr. President. I am Rutherford." Rutherford replied as he continued to shake hands with the President

After shaking hands the President continued "So, Mr. King I hope that I've not caused too much trouble with my visit."

Shaking his head Jude responded, "Not at all, Sir,"

"Very well. So, shall we?" replied the President motioning for Mr. King to begin.

Jude moved to start the tour. They walked towards the medical wing of the facility. They walked in silence with only the click of their heels on the tile breaking the silence that hovered over them. The group stepped into a waiting room where there were only a few patients in the waiting as the tour came in. The receptionist smiled widely and stood to greet the tour.

"Hello and welcome to our medical center." Said the woman eagerly from behind her desk.

"Why, thank you miss." Replied the President nodding at the woman. The President moved away from his watchdogs and walked up to speak with a patient waiting for an appointment. The elderly woman was waiting for a routine checkup before her pill day. The President quietly approached the woman and motioned to the seat next to her asking for permission to sit "May I?" he asked. Looking surprised the woman nodded. The President sat down next to the woman as his guards flinched in disapproval of his decision. He noticed the unease of his men and gave them a warning look to stand down. The President sat down next to the woman and stuck out his hand and the woman feebly shook his hand. The President asked politely as they shook hands "What is your name ma'am?"

"Megan." Replied the woman softly.

The President looked sincerely into the woman's eyes as he spoke: "It is very nice to meet you, Megan."

Megan replied, "It is nice to meet you as well, Mr. President."

Shaking his head he continued "Oh no. You can call me Fred."

Nodding her head she replied, "Well, it's very nice you meet you, Fred."

The President continued "If it's not too personal, may I ask why you are here today?"

Looking glum Megan continued "I am here for a checkup before my pill day."

Noticing the woman's sadness the President said "Your country thanks you for your service. Try not to feel so bad; you are truly doing your country a service."

Megan thought to herself, Oh yeah that's easy for you to say considering you aren't in my shoes. She smiled and replied "I know. It's just that my Pill day has been moved to a closer date." She wiped away a tear from her eye as she spoke.

The President gave Jude a quick glance before continuing "I am so sorry to hear this Megan." He looked at Jude as he asked: "Is there nothing that can be done?"

Jude shook his head in response to the question. The President looked displeased and rose from his chair as he spoke, "How does something like this happen Mr. King?"

Jude quietly responded, "There was a mishap with our technical systems."

The President shook his head and asked again, "There is nothing that can be done?"

"I'm afraid not Sir. The system is very strict and we have to follow the rules to the T." replied Rutherford.

The President was obviously upset but understood that the policy could not be broken. He sat back down to console Megan. He said, "I am sorry that I cannot be of any help to you Megan. I wish you the best." He stood to continue the tour, but he hugged Megan before leaving.

As the President left the lobby Megan sat back down in her seat to wait for her appointment. She smiled to herself not because the President had been so kind, but because he was naïve. Like most people, they overlooked the sweet old lady believing she couldn't possibly cause any harm, but little did they know she was a trained spy. She had successfully placed one of Marjorie's old bugs on his hand where it would stay avoiding detection. Marjorie was a genius with technology making the bug waterproof. Feeling pleased with herself Megan thought of the possibilities the bug could produce. They could finally prove the corruption inside the White House and take down this institution.

Marjorie came racing down the hallway towards Joanie and Sal who were sitting in the common room talking. Stopping in front of the table Marjorie gasped for air as she spoke: "You're nev—never goi—going to guess what just happened." Marjorie had a huge grin on her face as she finished her sentence.

Giving Marjorie a confused look Joanie asked, "What happened?"

"Yeah, Marj?" asked Sal along with Joanie.

Smiling widely Marjorie could barely contain her excitement as she blurted out, "Megan bugged the President!"

Looking surprised Joanie asked, "Come again?"

Nodding her head in a fury of excitement Marjorie said, "She bugged the President. The President."

Laughing Sal said, "Well, I'll be dog gone, I can't believe it. How on earth did she do it?"

Shrugging Marjorie continued, "I have no idea. One of my old bugs just activated and there it was the voice of the President."

Still shocked Joanie asked, "And they have no idea he's bugged?"

"They must not, considering they're still talking." Replied Marjorie.

Laughing Joanie said, "I knew she was a good, but never did I consider she would be able to bug the President."

"Now we'll be able to catch them. We've really got them this time Sal. They can't hide anymore and we're going to get them." Said Marjorie elated.

"Julian would've loved this." Said Joanie quietly.

Nodding in agreement Sal said, "Yeah he would've gotten a kick out of the President being one upped by an old woman."

Sitting down Marjorie said, "Yeah, he would've been on the floor laughing at the thought. He really loved this job."

The three of them sat quietly thinking of Julian and how he would have loved to know they had bugged the President and it was because of an elderly woman.

"Yeah, he did love when he could trick his mark and successfully bug them. It was what he loved most - being able to outsmart people." Said Joanie remembering Julian's first successful mission.

"Wow JoJo! What a rush." Said Julian eagerly as he paced the room.

Joanie laughed as she asked "I know. Feels good to outsmart them doesn't it?"

Julian stopped pacing the room smiling as he replied "Oh, yeah and he has no idea."

Marjorie was sitting in the corner listening intently into her headset and took notes. She lifted the headset off and smiled at Julian and said. "Good job kid. We have enough to get him."

Sal came up and patted Julian on the back saying "Yeah, great job man." He shook Julian's hand and walked over to Joanie. He sat down next to Joanie on the bed as Julian continued to relive the moment he bugged his mark.

"It was like I was in the zone and there was nothing else around. I just kept nodding along while he went on about his business. When he finally stopped droning on I shook his hand and thanked him for his business advice and bam just like that he was bugged. What a rush. The guy never even expected a thing." Explained Julian as Joanie and Sal listened intently.

Agreeing with Joanie, Sal nodded and said "I remember our first mission he was so happy. He could barely contain himself."

Marjorie said "He was a great agent."
