nineteen lightly taps her bare feet on the ground, twisting her hair around. she's laying on her back on the bed, her feet barely brushing the floor. she had been trying to braid her hair after max had quickly shown her how. she wasn't doing very good, but max told her practice makes perfect.
the redhead in question was dancing around the brunette's room, holding a hairbrush while singing along to angel. eleven sat beside nineteen, facing her and looking through some magazines max had gotten.
nineteen sits up, facing towards eleven and crossing her legs. she twisted the hair again, before letting it fall disappointedly. it looked right, but it was messy.
max comes to a stop, looking at eleven, who was holding a magazine open. she laughs. "oh, you found ralph macchio."
"macchio?" eleven asks, looking down at max at the weird name. max nods as nineteen undos her hair and leans forward in interest. she looks between the two girls before continuing. "yeah, he's the karate kid." she says before doing a karate chop on the magazine. "hai-yah!"
the three girls giggle. "he's so hot, right?" max asks. nineteen leans forward, curling up beside eleven to look at the boy. he's pretty.
"i bet he's an amazing kisser, too." max states. eleven and nineteen look at her weirdly. "hey, uh..." the redhead starts again. she gets up on the bed.
"is mike a good kisser?" she asks. eleven tries not to smile.
"i don't know. he's my first boyfriend." she tells her.
"ex-boyfriend." max corrects. el looks down solemnly.
"hey, don't worry about it. okay?" max tells her. "he'll come crawling back to you in no time, begging for forgiveness. i guarantee you, him and lucas are, like totally wallowing in self pity and misery right now. they're like, "oh, i hope they take us back!" god, what i wouldn't give to see their stupid faces."
the three girls giggle before nineteen and eleven suddenly stop at the same and look at each other. the same idea forming in their mind. max notices. "what is it?"
nineteen bites her lip. eleven quickly tells her about how they can find people. they explained it was sort of like nineteen being able to read people's minds but they actually saw people and where they were.
max turned on the orange radio on the vanity to the correct channel and eleven sat in the floor, nineteen beside her. nineteen and eleven had grabbed the bandanas they both needed and silently tied them around their eyes. nineteen didn't even really need the bandana as she could already see everything, but it helped for her to actually get there, and to focus.
max hurries to the bed to watch them. "is this really gonna work?" she asks eagerly. eleven nods as she finishes tying.
"holy shit, this is insane!" max laughs.
"max." eleven scolds. nineteen lightly smiles at how eleven had told her multiple times that they would need quiet, but max's excitement got the better of her.
"yeah, quiet. i'm sorry."
nineteen lays her hands on her knees and takes a breath in, and then out.
and then the voices come. she can hear them all clearly, but they're still coming through so that she can see them.
it's blurry for a moment, but then she realizes that her bare feet are now cold and wet. she looks down and realizes that they are submerged in water, and when she looks up again, she sees the boys.
her arm bumps eleven's, and they look at each other with sly smiles. they look at the three boys, mike laying on the couch eating, lucas walking toward the couch, and will over by himself at a table.
"we see them." eleven notifies max.
in the back of her mind, nineteen can distantly hear max sitting down in front of them.
"what are they doing?" she hears by her right ear.
"eating." nineteen and eleven say in unison. they watch mike eat a chip and then hold his hand up.
"i just don't understand what i did to deserve this." he says with his mouth full. nineteen and eleven start walking closer to them.
"nothing. nothing." lucas responds. "that's my whole point here. you are the victim here." nineteen almost scowls. she hated that word.
"i know. it's just, why is she treating me this way? i don't know." he whines. "you know, i bet it's max and nineteen."
nineteen looks over at eleven, who sends her back a frown. nineteen looks down at her feet before back at the black-haired boy.
"mike," lucas sighs, his hands on his face.
"what did i do wrong?" mike almost yells. "what did i do wrong?!" eleven almost groans.
you're so mean. eleven wants to tell him.
"mike, stop. relax. just relax." lucas shakes mike's foot. "okay? stop asking rational questions."
"i know, i know, you're right." he says, making lucas nod.
"because women act on emotion and not logic."
"precisely. it's a totally different species."
nineteen and eleven's heads whip towards one another. nineteen distantly wonders if lucas just insulted them, but they know that what mike just said isn't good at all, they just don't necessarily know what it means, so they go to max.
"they say we are 'species'." eleven says. "what?" max says in confusion.
"emotion, not logic." nineteen adds.
"what?!" max asks louder, in disbelief. she looks down at the ground, wondering if lucas really thought that.
"mean sons of bitch."
"whoa, blue."
nineteen slides away from eleven, who's too busy staring at mike and lucas and listening to their conversation, and stands a few feet away from will, who's by the table, ignoring the two other boys. she stares at him for a minute as he arranges the game pieces, until he suddenly stops and glances over his shoulder at her exact spot. his eyes roam over her figure as if he can actually see her and her eyes widen. he straightens up and furrows his eyebrows.
nineteen backs up a little, walking backwards to her sister. will blinks rapidly and then looks down at the table before going back to what he was doing.
shaking a little, nineteen backs into eleven, moving her slightly. she glances quickly at the short haired girl, who looks at will as he starts to speak.
"guys! it's ready." he tells them eagerly, looking over at his girl-crazy best friends.
"will, not right now." lucas says as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"they broke up with you!" he argues. "what else is there to talk about?" nineteen's eyes widen slightly. she'd never seen will get even a little mad like that. he looks back down at the dungeons and dragons board.
"tons." lucas states. "yeah," mike agrees. "we're trying to solve the great mystery of the female species. you probably have to deal with this if you're hanging out with blue and max so much."
while lucas chose to ignore the jab and just fumed in silence, only to deal with his hurting friend, will had other ideas. "what the hell does that mean?" he throws down his game board piece, raising up to look at mike's long form on the couch. nineteen takes a couple of steps back, hurt at mike's comment, again.
"so mean." she hears eleven's voice tremble as she grits out the words to max. max shakes her head disappointedly, as she knows mike probably said something about blue.
"oh, come on, it's not serious." mike says. will sighs, shakes his head, and leans against one of the chairs. nineteen bites her lip, looking over at eleven, who takes her hand.
mike stops for a second, before letting out an extremely loud burp. nineteen and eleven look at each other in disgust, shuffling their feet.
mike chuckles. "dude, you can smell the nacho cheese." he points at the chip in his hand.
will groans, shaking his head as lucas laughs at both of them.
"i got that beat." lucas says quietly.
"what?" mike asks.
"oh, no." will mutters.
"no, lucas, no." mike tells him. the girls look over at the boy in confusion.
"no!" mike and will both yell, one in amusement and the other in alarm.
and then, and nineteen will never ever forget this, lucas hikes up his leg and farts so loud that it echoes.
eleven and nineteen both stumble back in fear, not knowing what was going on, and nineteen grabs eleven's arm, ready to run away with her.
nineteen feels her bandana yanked off of her head, and she blinks rapidly at the new light in her bedroom. eleven's got blood running from her nose, and nineteen feels it on her cheeks. the telekinetic girl holds both of their bandanas in her hands, and is looking at nineteen in shock.
"wh-what happened?" max asks in alarm.
eleven turns to her with wide eyes, looks to nineteen again, before she slowly cracks a smile. nineteen grins wide and then they fall over in laughter.
"what..." max started to laugh. "what happened?" the brunettes just laugh harder. max bends down over them, trying to get something out of them, while also laughing until her face turned red.
before the girls could tell max what happened, nineteen sat up quickly, her smile dying as she heard hopper's quite angry thoughts and his car pull up.
she tapped them and they stopped when they also heard the car. they look to the door, suddenly fearful.
max quickly gets up, and turns the radio on again. pop music plays and max grabs a few magazines and they lay down on the floor. max settles in the middle of the two girls as they lay on their stomachs. she points out river phoenix to nineteen, who oogles him for a good 20 seconds.
hey!
nineteen's head snaps up, and she looks at the door with a scared face. the other girls don't notice as they continue to look down at the magazines. she bites her lip, and just buries her face in the magazine.
hey!
when i say three inches-
the door is yanked open, and nineteen gasps, shrinking into max's side.
hopper looks at the bed, where he assumes mike and el would be, but looks down at the floor where max, eleven, and nineteen are looking up at him expectantly.
"do you knock? jeez!" max cries.
"yeah, jeez!" eleven mimics. nineteen just stares up at hopper, one million emotions fleeting across her face.
"woah, woah, woah, hey..." he says, holding his hands up. "i'm sorry." he says, now awkward. "i thought that, uh-"
"mike's not here." max informs the man and he starts backing out of the room.
"max wanted to have a sleepover." eleven tells him. his eyes widen and he glances between the three girls. "is that... okay?"
"yeah." hopper breathes out in astonishment that mike wasn't the one in the room. "yeah, yeah, yeah. your parents know about it?" he asks the redhead.
she nods. "yup."
"uh, yeah, it's cool..." he slurs. "yeah. that's.. that's really cool."
nineteen's eyebrows furrow as she suddenly wonders why he is acting so weird. it's awkward between the four of them for a few seconds before max speaks up.
"did you need something?"
"no, no. i'll-i'll leave. i'll just let... i'll leave you-" he quickly shuts the door.
that was embarrassing.
but not so bad.
nineteen shakes her head lightly, looking down at her magazine as max and eleven snicker to themselves.
-
"holy shit, i can't believe we're really doing this."
max writes another name on the paper and looks between the girls. they had come up with a game that whenever they landed on a name, they would spy on them. eleven and nineteen had had so much fun spying on the boys, they quickly hopped on the idea.
"ready?" max asks.
"ready." the girls respond.
eleven spins the empty coke bottle and they watch as it lands on... mike's dad.
"mr. wheeler." they all say dejectedly.
"ugh, boring." max says with a small laugh.
"yeah, boring." nineteen agrees with a similar laugh. "spin again." max tells eleven.
eleven goes to spin, but stops and looks at max. "against the rules?" she asks. max leans forward.
"we make our own rules." max states. the two other girls both smile at max and then each other.
eleven spins and they watch as it lands on max's stepbrother.
"billy." they say. eleven and nineteen both start to laugh, but when they look at max, she's staring solemnly down at the board.
"okay, look, i should just warn you guys," max says, getting off the bed to grab the radio. "if he's with a girl or doing something gross, just get out of there right away before you're scarred for life."
"max-"
"no, i'm just saying, i'm serious." she gives them their blindfolds. "he's really gross."
"max!"
"okay!" max looks up with a laugh. "shutting up now."
max tunes the radio and situates herself across from nineteen and eleven. they both wrap the blindfolds around their heads.
it takes them a minute to get to the void, but when they do, nineteen feels immediately suspicious. her and eleven look at each other, and then they look to their right. a car sits there with its lights on low. the car's engine idles as nineteen starts to walk towards the driver side window. she hears eleven's feet in the water follow behind her.
the wind shield is busted, like one large circular object landed on it. they peer down inside the car as they walk past it, when they suddenly hear a whimper.
they look around and nineteen feels her senses go haywire. something is wrong. she sees that billy is leaning on the ground, over something.
"we found him." eleven tells max.
"what's he doing?" max asks solemnly, like she knows something is wrong.
"i don't know." eleven responds.
"don't be afraid." billy states.
nineteen starts to tremble. she can't hear him.
"he's..." eleven mumbles. "on the floor..."
"it'll be over soon."
"..talking to someone."
"no.." nineteen gasps quietly, her voice shaking.
"blue?" max suddenly says, looking at her. nineteen distantly hears her but all she can see is billy. it can't be him, it can't. he'll kill all of us.
they walk forwards. the person they can't see is now whimpering. nineteen is ahead of eleven, eager to see what's going on with billy.
"just stay very still."
billy begins to stand as nineteen stops right behind him. he turns around quickly, and looks right at her.
she gasps, and stumbles back into eleven. everything happens quickly and she feels her senses go distorted as she feels him.
nineteen rips the blindfold off. "no! no!" she screams. blood dribbles down from her eyes as she starts crying, looking at max.
"what? what is it?" max asks frantically.
what happened?!
-
thunder rumbles over their heads as the three girls walk to max's house. max had brought a spare change of clothes, and el and nineteen had put on some of the clothes they had bought the day before.
"it's gonna start pouring soon." max says to them. "we should be at the mall or, like, watching a movie or something." the brunette's eyebrows furrow and they look over at her. "you don't believe us?" eleven asks.
"i believe you saw some super weird stuff, totally, but you said mike has sensed you in there before right?" max says to her left at eleven, she then looks to her right at nineteen. "and will, he looked right at you?"
nineteen looks down at her feet as they walk. max was right. "so maybe it was just like that. maybe billy just... sensed you somehow."
"but i could feel the monster. i felt something." nineteen says.
"maybe you just have ptsd or something." max states, bumping her arm into nineteen's comfortingly.
"what?" both the girls mutter, looking over at the redhead.
"ptsd: post traumatic stress disorder. it's like when something really, really bad happens to you that, like, scars you for life. and you still suffer from it." max tried to explain delicately. "it's common in war veterans but lucas did say stuff about you two being at the... lab?" she goes quiet.
nineteen glances at max, but they don't say anything to her. she looks over at eleven, who was looking back at her with an indescribable expression. the long haired girl looks away and wraps her arms around herself. nineteen had recently started proving herself to be independent, but at the moment, she really missed when she had first met steve and had someone to look after her the whole time.
"but what about the screams?" eleven suddenly asks. max throws her head back in slight annoyance.
"yeah, i know, but here's the thing." she sighs. "when billy is alone with a girl, they make, like, really crazy noises."
"they scream?" eleven asks in confusion.
"yeah, but, like... happy screams..?"
"what?" nineteen asks in confusion as eleven throws her hands down in confusion as well. "happy screams? what is happy screams?"
"it's like..." max looks up to think of something to say, but then realizes what that conversation could turn into, so she just looks between them and says, "i'm just gonna lend you guys my mom's cosmo."
they arrive at max's house and stare at it. it looks practically empty. "his car's not here." max states.
"you really want to do this?" max asks them. nineteen looks over at her as eleven nods. "yes."
they walk inside, and max hesitantly leads them to billy's room. the door creaks as she opens it. loud, heavy metal music is playing that billy must have left on the stereo.
"why do i get the feeling we're gonna find all kinds of wrong in here?" max says. they stop in the doorway as max walks over to billy's nightstand and opens a drawer.
max looks for a second before she suddenly lets out a disgusted noise. "ugh. gag me with a spoon!" she shuts the drawer and backs away. they don't stay very long before leaving his room and going to the bathroom, where eleven flicks the light on.
nineteen steps up behind eleven as she looks around, before finally seeing piles of melted ice in the bathtub, along with wet bags. they look down at the water. "max?"
she walks over. she picks up a floating bag. "ice. it's just ice."
he likes it cold.
nineteen looks over at eleven as that thought passes around her mind. of course.
"it's probably for his muscles or something." max continues. "he works out like a maniac."
nineteen closes her eyes for a moment, trying to get a sense of anything, or maybe a small thought, when eleven suddenly grabs her elbow harshly.
nineteen's eyes shoot open, and she looks to her right at the girl, who's staring behind them at the sink. nineteen turns, and is met with her reflection, but as she starts looking down, she sees small bloody fingerprints on the doors underneath the sink. she looks to her sister and then at max, who has turned around as well, but she hasn't seen the blood.
they walk over, and nineteen opens the drawers. the brunettes shuffle through the things underneath there, before nineteen pulls out a small, green bucket.
"blue, what is it?" max asks.
the girl in question pulls out a red fanny pack with the word guard on it and a small plus sign. it could have been billy's, but judging by the jewels at the bottom, they guess it isn't.
eleven then looks down at the bucket in nineteen's hands and pulls out a lifeguard whistle that has small blood stains all around it.
the brunettes slowly turn around to max, who's face has gone extremely worried.
please, god, no.
