Chapter 1 - Indigo Comforter
My name is Saige Wendalson. And honestly, I never thought kidnapping would be a part of my daily routine, even as a superhuman with abilities. Who thought that being able to defend oneself from mastermind criminals would get you stolen out of your indigo comforter in the middle of the night? Obviously not me.
As I am tied to a cold metal chair by an unidentifiable force, I am pondering my life choices. A sharp pounding at my temple woke me. I gingerly opened my eyes. The metal chair was extremely uncomfortable and I could only guess I was still in my pajamas from the night before.
Here I am. In a tank top and fuzzy bottoms. Probably being held hostage because of some reason or other. Yipee! And I wasn't wearing shoes.
Ugh, I had a history exam today that I could not miss. Saige! Why did you do this to yourself? I mentally scolded myself. I had thought about closing and locking my window last night but had decided against it. There's no way anyone knew my true identity. I was always so careful, even going as far as to sleep with my mask on. Hope coursed through me when I realized I was still wearing my mask. I sighed with relief. Now I just had to find a way out. It was plainly obvious who kidnapped me in my mind. I just had to wait to confirm my suspicions.
My main ability, known as Opacity, is very close to permeation. I can manipulate the exact density of my body to pass through objects. The only catch is I have to see an object to figure out its density.
Footsteps echoed from somewhere ahead of me. I estimated they were within hearing distance. I chose now to be pissed.
"I thought I made it clear when we agreed to have a no abduction policy." I snapped.
"You weren't cooperating. What else was I supposed to do, Ace?" The voice answered, using my hero alias.
"Not cooperating? You kidnapped me out of my bed! In the middle of the night, Midas!" I felt a hand pull at the blindfold and was lifted off my face. I blinked several times.
"You weren't answering my phone calls!" His agitated voice matched the expression on his face when it came into view, then it softened slightly. His mask did almost nothing to mask his emotions. Pun intended. "Nice purple blanket, by the way." His playful smirk made me roll my eyes.
"It's called indigo and I switched my phone number,"
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to. Now, will you untie me?" He entirely ignored my question. My wrists were itching from the rough material binding them.
"You like to keep things exactly as they are. There has to be a reason why you changed your phone number of all things." I debated telling him. No, I thought, he knows too many of my weaknesses already. The truth was I had been getting mean text messages from girls at school, but there's no way I was going to tell him that.
"Why are you glaring at me like that?" He gave me a weird look.
"I'm hoping you'll spontaneously combust," I said harshly. He mimed being hurt.
"How violent, coming from the hero."
"You know me," I said sarcastically. The masked boy pulled out a device of some kind and began typing away with his thumbs. I leaned back on the hard chair and groaned. He looked at me.
"What's up with you?" He questioned. I raised my eyebrows as if to say, "Really? You're asking me that?"
"Bad day or something?" He continued.
"Ya think?"
"Don't worry, I'll untie you."
"Yes, please," I said, straightening up, "I can't feel my legs."
"But you have to give me your new number in exchange."
"What? Why? My number is for business, not an anti-hero with attachment issues" I protested as he took a few steps to the back of the chair, "And I don't want your stalkerish calls and texts coming through while I'm at school."
"Is that why you switched your number?"
"No, it's not. I switched it for other reasons." I paused. I couldn't see his face, but he seemed slightly relieved, "I mean, it was an added bonus." He wasn't going to win this time.
"Fine then, don't tell me." There wasn't any reason why I should tell him, but I immediately felt bad.
"What time is it?" I wondered if I missed my history test.
"About 6 AM," He fiddled with the binds around my feet, then my hands. Finally free, I stood up and stretched. After making sure my mask was placed neatly on the bottom half of my face, I hugged myself around my shoulders.
"It's cold in here!"
"That's because we're in a basement."
"Whose basement?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes, it does," I'd like to know who would be crazy enough to let Midas in their house.
"Anyway, I'll take you back to your house." Oh, heck no.
"You think I'd let you take me home? No way!" I exclaimed, folding my arms.
"How else are you going to get home?" He asked.
"I'm calling Prime Time."
"With what phone?" I held out my hand.
"Yours."
The basement turned out to be one belonging to an abandoned house in a more ghetto part of town. Pretty stereotypical of him, if I say so. After my urging, Midas gave me his phone. I then used it to call Prime Time, my superhero partner and real life best friend.
"Midas?!" Lory, that being her real name, showed her disdain for the villain with nothing but the way she said his name.
"Prime Time, it's Ace." I greeted her, my mood shifting a bit.
"Ace?" My best friend said through the phone, "Why do you have his phone? And why are you awake? You are never awake this early. I usually have to drag you out of bed. Don't tell me you went out to fight crime without me?"
"Nuh, uh. I just got kidnapped by Midas in the middle of the night."
"Midas, that friggin- '' She went off. I pulled the phone away from my ear.
"Are you done yet?" I asked when I stopped hearing her spit out insults.
"Maybe, but I won't promise anything," I rolled my eyes, "I thought you two agreed on a no abduction policy."
"That's what I said!" I eyed Midas, who smirked. I stuck my tongue out at him. "I need you to come get me."
"Where from?"
"Where are we?" I asked him, pulling the phone away from my ear again. He recited the address to me and I repeated it to Lory. After she hung up, I turned back to Midas.
"You can go now."
"But how will I know if you get home safe?" He asked. I chuckled.
"If I can defend myself against you, I can defend myself against anyone."
"You're not wrong." He admitted.
"Am I ever wrong?"
Midas consented to leaving. A few minutes later, Lory arrived fully decked out in her fuchsia suit, mask and everything. I was still in my pjs with no shoes. Happy times. I jumped in her car and buckled my seatbelt.
"You don't even need to put that on," She pointed out as she pulled onto the road, "Why do you when you can just phase through everything?"
"Safety first! There's no knowing when an accident might happen and it's better to be prepared." She responded by taking off her seatbelt. I shook my head. For a defender of the law, Lory was pretty rebellious.
"Are you ready for the history test today?" She and I, both being Juniors, had many of our classes together.
"Uh, huh! Are you?" She responded confidently.
"Sort of?"
" 'Sort of?' "
"Well, it would've helped had I gotten enough sleep last night! But a certain someone had to go and mess that up." I slumped back into the cushioned seat.
"You should just let me have a go at him. Trust me, he won't stand a chance against my aptitude for nature. I'll just set a pack of wild geese on him and-"
"Okay, okay, that's enough. He may be a pain in the butt, but at least he helps out sometimes."
"What did he want anyway?"
"My new number."
"That creep! But then there's Talia and her stupid friends making you change it in the first place. . ."
"It's all over now. I've only given the number to you and my parents."
"What did your parents say? About you disappearing in the middle of the night?" She questioned.
"Oh yeah," I yawned, "They're upstate gathering information about some new villain."
"Right. How does Midas know where you live?"
"I've got no idea. At least he doesn't know who I am."
"Right! I'm the only person who can know who you are, Ace." Lory's face wore a big proud smile.
"Right back at you, Prime Time."
"You riding the bus this morning?" I'm not sure why she asked, because I don't take anything else to school. 'Her car' was actually her brother's. She used it frequently, but since he went to a different school, we got stuck taking the bus. It could have been worse.
"Want me to just drop you off at home?" I nodded. Within a few minutes we arrived at my apartment.
"I better get going. Brant will be wanting his car back."
"See you soon." We said our goodbyes.
Once inside my house, I took a shower and got dressed. As much as I wanted my indigo comforter, I needed to study for the test I would take in a few hours. I dropped my history homework down on my bed and sat down to study.
My studying was going quite well. Despite being superhuman, my mind had always been normal, so school was just as hard for me as for a normal person in most ways. Science is an exception. My usual
I am very bad at time management, so I set timers on my phone for literally everything. The alarm for the school bus to arrive went off. I cleaned up my history work and shoved it into my backpack. I sure hope Midas doesn't continue this habit of kidnapping me every other week.
I decided to make sure my window was locked as well as my front door as I left my apartment. I checked to make sure my suit was in my bag, too. Knowing Midas, he would probably be stirring up trouble somewhere once I got done with school. He was so considerate to wait until the school day ended to start his scheming.
After grabbing my extra bag full of my hero stuff, I returned to the hallway. My phone said it was 8:05. The bus comes at 8:10. I started a speed walk down the stairs. It was all going okay until I missed the last step and fell. My hands slammed into the ground, along with my knees. Today was just not my day. I heard a loud laugh.
"Are you okay?" Annoyed, I decided to answer with one of my quick retorts.
"Yes, of course. It's just been a while since I possessed a body." I looked up into a pair of gorgeous green eyes. They belonged to a very good-looking guy. My eyes widened. The boy reached out his hand. I took it and stood up, suddenly flustered. "I-I mean, yeah, I'm good. J-just fine." An awkward moment passes.
"That's good," He looked very concerned. I realized I was still holding his hand and let go.
"Yeah, thanks." I awkwardly answered.
"I'm Evans." The boy said.
"Saige. Do you . . ." I paused, not sure how to recover the burning conversation with an uber hot guy. "Live here?" I finished. That sure sounded creepy, I thought.
"Yes, I moved in a few weeks ago." Evans scratched his head and looked at the ground. He senses the awkwardness too. I took a look at my phone.
"Sorry," I looked back at him, "I'll be late for the bus." Before he could respond, I speed walked in the direction of the bus stop and didn't look back.
