A killer

In a maximum of 3000 words, write an Alternate History about events involving your assigned historical individual : Windradyne.

He groaned again, tired of sitting in front of the campfire with this itchy shirt that held him captive. Moreover, Australia's air of 1800s stifled him. He, who could not stand this heat, should be silent and wait. Sweat beaded on his forehead despite the cool night air. Was it because of fear or excitement? Anyway, he was waiting, seated on a tree trunk surrounded by Aborigines.

From the information collected, the leader of the Wiradjuri would come here to celebrate his new life. Aparently, when he was fighting near the Macquarie River, an arrow appeared from nowhere and killed his opponent. Surprised, Windradyne even tried to follow the arrow man, but with the fight, he was too tired and was severly injured. Not enough to die, but enough to not be able to catch him. Nobody could find the arrow man either.

The leader was cured and after that, the healer said that he was lucky to be still alive. Of he was shot once more in the knee, he would have been injured too much to walk again.

So Windradyne was celebrating his win here, in a village near the place of his fight at the Macquarie river. From what Jay researched before time traveling here, there had been violent incident in May 1824 between Aborigines and white stockmen. The Governor of this western district had offer a reward for the capture of Windradyne. He had been suspected of killing seven stockmen. After an annual feast where Wiradjuri's leader came with a banner written « Peace » on it, he had been forgiven by the Governor.

Cheers were heard few meters around. With the night above, it was hard to distinguish a face with its features. A joyous group was coming his way, and that attracted the attention of all people seated on a circle of tree trunks.

There, the Aborigines' leader came first with a glorious walk, although a bandage was clearly visible on his knees. His piercing eyes screened the area showing a confident smile. Happiness radiated from him. Happiness and power.

This man who shouldn't be alive was there, standing in front of Jay. It was an incredible feeling for him. Never ever in his dreams would he have imagine that scene. The muscled man seated in front of him, after the fire. He was congratulated by many people and seemed embarrased. He was laughing a lot. A rich laugh, more joyous than scary.

Jay thought about the plan. Following him until he could corner the leader somewhere then an accident that Jay would have provoked will appear. His biggest problem now was that he hadn't think about Saturday's force, musculature and maybe intelligence.

From what he knew, Windradyne, also named Saturday, wasn't only a man of muscle but overall a clever man. Panick went trough Jay. How could he kill him? It was nearly impossible. Plus, being a villain wasn't in his register. Him who never killed a spider, killing this Windradyne, a figure of peace between Aborigines and stockmen, was a crazy idea. Maybe he could ask someone else to kill him?

Suddenly, Windradyne's eyes pierced Jay. Surprised, the stranger stayed a while looking at him, before lowering his eyes to the ground covered with earth.

"Who are you?"

The question held power and curiosity. At least, he wasn't angry. A little man with a round stomach stopped eating his crocodile's meat to come next to the stranger of this tribe.

"Ah this man is Jeijei, a friend of mine. I invited him. He respects you deeply."

"Jeijei? From which tribe are you?" asked Windradyne, all his attention on the traveler.

"I... I came not long time ago in this place. My father heard about your motivation to cease war with white men and I came to see you in person."

Jay's lie came rapidly out of his mouth. He was surprised but didn't show it. He hoped that Windradyne would believe him without many questions posed. Jay was lucky to have a black colored skin. Not as black as Windradyne's, but enough to be a part of an aborigines' tribe. When he came in this area through the space machine the Professor created, he easily found the man named Winnye when he was drinking enough to accept Jay as a friend. The traveler asked for information and a place to stay which Winnye gave right away.

Jay stopped his thoughts and began eating what a woman of this tribe offered him. Chewing on a piece of meat, he could sense Saturday's glare from time to time.

"It's not to cease war but to avoid battles with them. They are cunning and false. You should always watch your word with those men. Their sense of honour is biased compared to ours."

"Saturday! Let's not talk about them! Drink, eat and dance!" said Winnye already drunk.

People laughed at his behaviour, but did what he said. Some got up to dance near the fire while others sang or ate. Jay was chewing again another piece while looking at Windradyne's knees. They were near the Macquarie river where Saturday normally should have been dead. So a death this night could restore the order of History.

Jay was thinking of poisoning him or aggravating the state of his knees. How? No ideas came to his mind. He sighed before looking at the sky. Stars were comtemplating his agony. Tired, he rubbed his eyes.

"It's been few hours, do you wish to sleep Jeijei?" asked Windradyne which made Jay jump.

He wasn't prepare for his deep voice. His words were nice, but Jay's heart was beating rapidly. Like he was afraid that the leader could hear his thoughts of murder. Anyway, Jay didn't want to kill him and yet, he was searching for the best way to target this leader. In his mind, he swore at the Professor who sent him here. Not liking how things were going.

"It's fine. It was a heavy day with a lot of wandering," explained the thin man to Saturday.

"If you want to share your thoughts, I am there."

Jay politely thanked him and went back to the bungalow of his drunken friend to sleep. He couldn't say that he was thinking of a way to murder him. The leader and everyone in this tribe would have laughed at him. Jay slept like he could, perturbed by dreams where he wasn't able to change this present. Consequences on the future. There could be an arise of a problem between Windradyne and the Governor. If it was the case, the leader would not finish as a hero but as a foe or a traitor. Who knows what could happen after the fact that he was still alive when he should be dead.

When Jay woke up, he thought of a plan. He was determined. No matter what way, he needed to kill the leader accidently, so the next day, he choose to put poison made with toxic plants in Windradyne's drink, however nothing happened during the next days. He tried to put some traps.

In the forest, in the village, near the river too. Rope, fish line... Jay even tried to bait crocodiles with meat. Like that, he would bring the leader near those dangerous animals to be devored. Unfortunetely, Windradyne knew how to deal with reptiles. He even killed some, which make Jay surprised and appreciative. The leader had sharp senses that let him to know when a rope would be tensed, ready to catch him.

Despite all his murderous effort, Saturday always found a way to survive. Depressed, Jay sat down in front of the campfire and looked at the dancing flame.

"Why this face Jeijei? I am fine, you don't need to worry," said Saturday with a soft voice.

"I know. But..."

Jay pinched his nose, frustrated to not being able to do something about the future. Alternate history was dangerous. Now one could know what would happen next, but one thing was sure, the present that Jay knew wouldn't exist anymore. Aborigines and White men.

Saturday didn't press Jay. In contrary, he just waited. Sitting on the trunk after walking around the forest to collect some branches for the fire, they were appreciating the Nature around them.

The day was dying slowly to let the night arise with its joyous life of darkness. Jay had discovered that many animals woke up at this time. They would prefer the light of the moon. A beautiful quarter. A beautiful night that he enjoyed like he could never take the time in his present.

Nevertheless missing his comfortable life, he wanted to go back to his home and the only way for it was that History remained the same.

"If someone changed the past and you had the opportunity to change it back, will you let the past changed or change it back?" asked Jay slowly.

He didn't know if it was the best idea but the thin man was tired of all these attempts of murder. In a way, he was relieved not to have to kill him. However he was failing the only job he had to do. The culpability gnawed at him. Should he cease his attempts of murder? Was there another way to obtain the same future with Windradyne still alive?

"The man who changed the past did it for a reason. Why bother to change it back ? This changed past will give a new future, better or not that's not the question. The man who want to change back the past to have the same future he knows will only create more complication for himself," explained the leader scratching his beard while thinking.

"What do you mean? Which complication? Normally, past is changed and future will change too. If you changed back the past, future will be as you know."

"Will it really? In your story, you told me that there was a man who changed the past. At the moment where he changed events of past, the future would never be the same as what the man who want to change back the past knows."

"But consequences are little. The fastest he changes back the past, the more the future will remain like he used to know."

"How do you know that?" asked Sarurday arching his brow.

"That's just logical," puffed Jay.

"Time is tricky. You think that some minutes passed but it has been an hour that we are sitting here. If past is changed, future is changed as well. The real question is, are you sure to change back the past with no real proof that future will be like you know? Think about that while walking. We need to go back to the campfire."

Jay was deep in his toughts. He didn't know what to do anymore nor what to think. Ideas of killing became blurry. He couldn't think of one useful.

"So you will not change back the past ?"

"If it's not necessary no. I would just appreciate what gods offer to us."

Jay thought a lot about his words. This man wasn't a leader for nothing and like Jay suspected he had brain and muscles. What should he do now? Kill him or let the fate win? After walking with heavy branches on his shoulders, he decided, as he put them down, to let Saturday live. He didn't know if it was a wrong or a good choice, but he was determined.

In the end, what wrong could happen in the future? Windradyne was still considered a hero. Jay just needed for the Governor and Aborigines to not confront each other too much.

However something wrong happened two days later.

Jay woke up hearing shouts outside. Panicked, he jumped from his bed, put a pair of pants and went to see the commotion. People were walking everywhere, he couldn't find out why. He saw Winnye from afar. He went to him and saw blood on his clothes.

"Sa-Saturday is dead!" exclaimed with horror the aborigin.

Jay's eyes were big while Winnye cried like many others. The traveler did his best to comfort him but shock was displayed on his face.

"Winnye you need to tell me, what happened exactly?" asked Jay looking at Winnye's eyes.

"We were near the Macquarie river to catch fish... everything went well. But when we came back running through the forest, Saturday fell down and shouted. Hi-his knees were bleeding too much. We transported him to the hospital. I-I came here to announce his death."

Winnye sobbed after saying the story. Jay sat down blocking all the cries, shouts, pain of others. He just felt numb.

The man went far away from the tribe after the incident. He couldn't face anyone. He couldn't bear the pain. The fishing line was his. He forgot to remove this trap. It was one of the many way to kill Saturday by accident. Funny thing, it worked. Windradyne was no more on earth and his mission was successful.

But it was with a saddened heart that he went back to his present.
