Barley yawned heavily as he watched your sleeping face. Your head was resting on his leg, just above his knee. You were turned on your side, facing toward him, hands tucked under your cheek.
You looked peaceful. Too peaceful to wake up.
He folded his hands behind his head and leaned back against the sofa. He shut his eyes.
Ian shuffled into the living room, a can of soda in hand. "She still out?"
"Yup," Barley replied.
"You're just gonna let her keep sleeping?"
"Uh-huh."
"She's been out for three hours.'
"I know."
Ian shrugged. "Okay. Night, Barley."
"Night," he said.
Ian hurried up the steps. Barley yawned loudly. A few seconds later, he was out, the television muted.
You woke up to the sound of the voice again. Your eyes shot open, your heartbeat quickened. You slowly sat up, careful not to disturb your sleeping boyfriend, who was snoring loudly, his mouth hung wide open.
"I can hear you," you whispered.
Then find me, the voice seemed to say.
You shook your head. "I won't."
They sang again. Swallowing hard, you turned to Barley and grabbed his shoulder. You shook him gently. He mumbled in his sleep.
"Barley," you said. "Barley, wake up."
He only snored louder now. Giving up, you turned and glanced around. You brought your arms to your chest as if you were cold.
"What do you want?" you hissed.
You stood up from the sofa and looked around you. Your eyebrows furrowed together as you waited.
But what were you waiting for? You had no idea. It wasn't like they were going to step out from the shadows and confront you. You didn't even know who they were or what they wanted.
Exhausted and annoyed, you glanced back at Barley. You wished he would wake up, but he could sleep through anything.
The voice continued to call. You felt like you were losing it. You rubbed your temples as you approached the front door. You opened it silently, pressing your hand against the wood and pulling it slowly so that it wouldn't creak. You stepped outside and shut it behind you before you stepped onto the sidewalk and looked around.
"Do you want me to come find you?" you asked. "Is that what you're telling me? I can't just pick up everything and go, you know. I-I have people here. People that I care about. I couldn't ask them to do this..." You bit down on your lip. "Could I?"
The voice sang out again. You sighed and walked down the sidewalk.
"I'm afraid," you explained softly. "I am afraid of what I'm risking if I follow you. So I can't... even if I know that I should. Even if I know I don't belong here."
They sang. They understood.
"Every day it's a little harder," you said. "I-I can feel my power grow."
You dropped your arms and opened your palms. Swirls of ice lifted around you and you breathed in happily. Then, suddenly, they shot forward without you --- without your command.
You ran up the sidewalk to follow them. A wall of fog and ice was now in front of you, thick and glittering. You weren't afraid as you stepped through it.
Inside, everything was glittering with ice. You were amazed and in awe of what you were seeing. Shapes of trees surrounded you, the gusts of wind pushed you forward. You saw the ice transform into the shapes of giants stomping around you, of people running in a forest, chasing one another, of a small flicker of purple flame darting around you on the ground --- and finally of a woman that turned when you approached her. Her hair blew with the wind and then she disappeared in the gust.
The fog and ice vanished, swirling upward into the air and flying away. You reached out your hand, terrified of seeing it go without you. Your feet were moving forward before you could even think about what you were doing.
"Wait! Where are you going?" you called out. "Don't leave me alone!"
You ran to the middle of the road and stretched your hand up. The ice disappeared into the clouds.
You gasped. "How do I follow you into the unknown?"
You tried to call it back. You shot ice upward into the air. As it hit the sky, it exploded in millions of crystals that surrounded you. They were the ones from your vision earlier, all the same four colors.
"Whoa," you whispered. You reached out to touch one.
"___!" Barley and Ian shouted together. They rushed out of the house, Ian clutching the wizard staff in his hand as he nervously looked around. Barley didn't hesitate to run straight towards you.
You turned. "Barley---"
As soon as your concentration was broken away from the crystals, they fell to the ground and shattered. Barley and Ian ducked under their arms as you watched the pieces crumble around you. Your eyes were wide and you glanced around in shock.
"Whoa," Barley breathed. "What did you do?"
"I-I don't know," you admitted. You turned. "I was just... just following, a-and---"
All at once, the lights on the street went out and you found yourself surrounded by complete darkness. You glanced around. Deep in the sewers below you, you heard the sound of the water gurgling. You head the sound of the Earth groaning. Then the wind picked up.
It blew around you, forcing you to stomp your foot down to catch yourself. You hurried over to Barley and he put his arm around you, placing his other hand on his brother's shoulder. He stood taller as he held you both close to him.
"This isn't good," Ian said nervously.
"What did I do?!" you cried.
Barley said, "Come on, we have to get inside!"
The three of you ducked your heads down as you fought against the wind to get into the house. Barley had to use his shoulder to shut the door. As he did, Ian clutched the wizard staff, glancing around him. You put your face in your hands.
"Oh jeez, what did I do?" you whispered.
"It's not your fault," Barley said automatically. The door was bending against the pressure of the wind.
"Not my fault? I did that!" you cried.
"Did something break?" Laurel cried from the top of the steps. "What was that sound?"
You pushed your messy hair back behind your ears and shook your head in disbelief. As Barley and Ian's mom came down, they explained to her what happened. Together, the three of them peeked out their window. Glancing outside, you saw that everyone else was doing the same thing.
Your throat burned with tears that wanted to spill. You couldn't believe that you had done this to these people. You turned away, wrapping your arms around yourself tightly.
"I don't understand," Laurel said. "How is all of this happening like this? Look at the road, it is cracking. The streets are flooding --- and the wind--- okay, back away from the window, boys. We should board these up."
The lights. The earth. The water. The wind.
"I woke them," you whispered in realization.
Barley glanced back at you. "You what?"
You turned around and your arms fell to your sides. "I woke the spirits. Earth, wind, water, fire. I woke them all up when I responded."
"Well," Laurel said nervously. "You clearly made them angry when you did it. Barley! Back up from the window."
"I'm sorry," you whispered, stepping backwards.
"No, no, it isn't your fault!" Barley said. He rushed over to you and grabbed your hand. You yanked it back and shook your head. "Come on, babe, you know you can't control---"
"I should be able to control it!" you hissed. "How did this happen? I wasn't --- I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary when they started calling to me. And now after I answer them, they're angry. And everyone here is going to suffer. Mushroomton is going to suffer! I'm putting all of these people in danger. I'm putting you in danger. You and Ian and your mom and stepdad and---"
At the mention of him, Laurel's eyes widened. "I need to call him. I need..." She left the room without another word, her fingers tapping against her phone screen.
"Okay, okay." Barley held up his hands. "Deep breaths."
You shook your head. You turned away from him and dropped down on the sofa with your face in your hands.
"Maybe... maybe the voice is angry that you aren't there," Ian said. "I mean --- if it's calling you to be somewhere. So it really isn't your fault, it's the voice's."
"Ian is right!" Barley exclaimed. You looked at them. "Think about it! The voice wants you to follow it, right? I mean, why else would it be calling you like this, especially after you've answered?"
"I-I guess," you mumbled.
"It makes sense." He walked over to you and plopped down on the sofa. You glanced down as he grabbed your hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. "Hey, it's going to be okay. We'll figure this out."
"How?"
"We'll go find the voice," he said. "You need to know what it is and what it wants."
"But we don't know where to go," you said. "How are we supposed to---"
He held up a hand. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. I think you are forgetting who we are! We are three grand adventurers! This just happens to be the most important quest ever."
"And hey," Ian said nervously, "what if getting there can stop this?"
"Again, Ian is right," Barley said. He took your hands in his. "So let's just go. Right now. We'll fix this, and we will find that voice that's calling you."
"You really want to go?" you whispered.
He nodded and smiled. "Right now."
"And you don't think I'm a monster for this?"
His hand cupped your cheek. "Babe, this isn't you. You aren't doing this. You could never be a monster."
"Okay," you said. You swallowed hard and nodded. "Let's go."
"We're really doing this?" he asked. You nodded again and he stood up, pulling you with him. He wrapped his arm tightly around you and turned to Ian and exclaimed, "Pack your bags, dear brother! We are going on a quest!"
