"Marcus, don't be such an ass!" I scoffed at the boys, picking on Hannah Baker. They always do that to her, and it's horrible to watch. Nobody deserved that. Boys can be such jerks, and I'm quite sure that Hannah has had enough.
"Relax, Middleton. We know you're just jealous because you weren't voted best ass." Justin Foley smirked drunkenly at me.
I scoffed, "Right. Don't worry, 'Justy'. I've been thinking of making a list as well," I glared. "in which you're voted as smallest dick."
Justin's smirk strips off his face, sending a pissed look in my direction. The room of boys are releasing "Ooh!"'s and "Wow!"'s, which was getting Justin even angrier. Honestly, I think he deserved it, flashing the boys a sneer before I rush off to follow Hannah Baker.
She was literally sprinting, making it hard for me to catch up to her.
When I finally got ahold of Hannah, I reached for her shoulder, which she jumped, turning around immediately. "Hey," I said, reluctantly reaching for her again.
Hannah turned around, impatiently waiting for me to speak. "Ignore them. I swear they have no clue how to be polite." I smiled kindly at her.
She agreed, shifting around to depart again. "Wait! You can trust me... You have my cell, right?"
"Y-Yeah, I do," Hannah said, nervously.
"Call me if you need anything. And please, don't hesitate to tell me if they bother you again... really."
Hannah smiled a little and uttered a small nod before rushing towards the door.
I stared blankly at my desk, not listening to whatever class I was in. It's been like this these past weeks. I'm pretty sure that my grades are falling apart too, but what can I possibly do?
My head is just somewhere else and if it's even if it's focused, it usually just becomes preoccupied again. How can Justin Foley live like a normal person after this? How can Jessica Davis attend cheerleading, parties, or any at all?
I don't understand because right now, I feel empty and tired like I just lost the ability to move and to listen. My coach is probably angry with me for not concentrating on practice. I've been sitting on the bench for at least 5 days, and it keeps getting worse.
"Miss Middleton?" The teacher's voice contracts me out of my trance.
"W-what?" I stutter. The teacher prepares herself to speak but is cut off when the bell chimes, saving me from humiliating myself in front of the rest of the students.
I sighed, assembling my books and putting them inside my drawstring bag, leaving the room as quickly as I could. I just wanted to go home, to sleep every problem away. But all I know at the moment is that I can't put up with this situation right now.
"Hey, Middleton!" A voice shouts behind me, but I just ignore it. I'm sure it's just someone who wants to stir up some drama. "Gabi, wait up!" The voice tries again.
"Gabi, stop!"
I sigh, rolling my eyes before spinning around, now face to face with Zach Dempsey. "Yes, Zach?" I ask, pushing myself to be kind.
"There's a party at Bryce's tonight. Do you wanna come... with me?" Zach asks, nervously. "I mean, not really with me but as friends?"
"I'm sorry, Zach. But I don't desire to be in the same room as Walker." I spin around, leaving the boy who's been working for the past two weeks to get my attention.
"Wait!" Zach stopped me again. I just wanted to get away, to move away from this school.
"What about softball practice? I can take you there, we're working out after school in the weight-room." He asks, hopefully.
I shake my head, "I'm sorry, Zach, not today." I apologized, leaving the disappointed boy alone behind me.
I started my homework 3 hours ago, but my notebook had been blank since the moment I had gotten home.
My phone kept on buzzing, making me more absent-minded than I already was. Justin Foley and his friends were all trying to get me to go to the party, but I kept ignoring them. It buzzed again and I scoffed, throwing my phone across the room and laying back against my pillow. I'm sure it was just a lame excuse to get me to drink with them. My phone vibrated against the white carpet, and I sighed, getting up to grab it. I honestly don't know why I even looked. I responded, annoyed and tired.
How bout you and your friends throw away the liquor you bought for me? Then, forget about it, because I am not coming.
That sucks. Your baby, Zach, wanted you to come.
Tell Dempsey to drink it off, and he's not my 'baby'.
That's it, Middleton. Be there in 5. ;)
I sighed and sat down on the edge of my bed. I didn't want my parents to think anything was going on, and prohibit me from sitting out from softball any longer, so I threw a hoodie over some leggings and called it good. They always think I'm being antisocial if I don't want to go to parties, but we all know that's not really the case. Boys really don't understand what a girl means when she says no. I'm pretty sure they have never heard it in their lives before me. I lazily stand up from my bed and walked to my mirror.
I didn't bother applying any more makeup since it stayed pretty well from school.
I ran down to tell my parents I was going to a party and ran back up quickly. I heard a knock on the shutter, followed by the roaring of Marcus and the others. I open the window and come face-to-face with Justin.
"Hey, gorgeous." Justin tries to climb in my window but stops when I glare at him.
"Just hold on," I opened the window a little more. "if you would've tried to climb through that small space, you would have broken something..." I walked over and closed my door shut.
"Damn, is that what you're wearing?" Justin scans my body disgusted.
I roll my eyes before smirking sarcastically, "Is your varsity jacket the only thing you own in your closet?"
And after I say that, I shut Justin up for good. At least, I hope I did.
"I think Gabi looks stunning, right Zach?" Marcus chuckles and nudges Zach, grinning at his zoned out friend.
"Y-yeah, you look great, Gabi."
"Damn, Zach! Smooth as silk." Justin laughed.
"Shut your mouth before my mom hears you." I sibilate quietly, putting on a pair of jet-black sneakers.
"Oh please, as if your mom doesn't know Jeff always came up here," Marcus laughed, and I froze at the mention of him.
"Dude," Zach glares, annoyed at his friend. I grabbed a jacket since it was kind of cold outside, and I reached for the door.
"Quietly, okay? Or I'll feed you to our cat."
I hear the boys snicker, before becoming silent and careful with the stairs. They got out of the house successfully without my parents noticing. Marcus fell down two stairs, making a loud noise, but thankfully, nobody heard. I mean, I had permission to go so I wasn't technically sneaking out, but I have four boys with me up in my room and that's a totally different story.
A few minutes later, we arrived at Bryce's. Some people are already drunk, while others are mostly sober and playing beer pong.
"Oh god, you are terrible." I laugh, as the boy tosses another ping-pong ball but fails to hit the cup.
"This is such a lousy sport." The boy says, surprised that he was 'losing to a girl'. I disagreed and shook my head.
"I don't think it's the game. You just really suck at it." I laughed a little, and he grinned.
"Excuse me, you're talking to the captain of the baseball team!" He smirks, his self-esteem clearly confident. He knows that he's good at it.
"Exactly why you should stick to baseball, Atkins." I stick my tongue at him, and we both laugh. "Tonight is the night that I will win."
I raise an eyebrow at him. "You are 8 points behind, but okay. We'll see . . . " I put on my 'game face'. I glanced at him, aiming for the 4th cup, before launching another ball. Then, the ball moves slowly into the cup and I smile, feeling accomplished.
I smirked at the attractive boy in front of me, but he has turned away.
"Did you even see that?" he turned back around and laughed. I rolled my eyes and took that as a 'no'. He was staring at me so closely that it made me begin to think that I had something on my face.
"W-why are you staring at me like that? Do I have a bug on my face?" I finally ask, cautiously trying to gaze at my face.
Jeff chuckled then he shook his head, "No, I'm just thinking how much I'm going to enjoy winning."
I wrinkle my nose in protest and he grinned. I wasn't sure how this happened, but our lips were only inches apart.
"Uh, hey Jeff. I need your help with something." The voice of Clay Jensen sounded. Jeff let out a small sigh before smiling apologetically at me. I smiled, letting him know it was fine, before backing up towards the table.
"Yes, Clay?" Jeff asks the shorter boy. I stood there awkwardly and Clay kept glancing at me.
"Hannah came, but I don't know how to talk to her."
Jeff laughs, before patting Clay on the back, leading him off towards the building, but not without sending a smile my way.
I wasn't going to update this early, but someone really wanted to read it. I hope you guys liked the first chapter. I will update when we get to 15-20 likes!
