FOUR

"Another meeting?" I stood by the door of the empty commons.

"It's about Clay," Courtney paced, her voice short, and I furrowed my eyebrows.

"We have to keep him quiet," Marcus says, slowly as if to pin it in everyone's mind.

"What should we do?" Zach asked, incredulously. Alex and Courtney shared a look, before answering.

"Marcus went to Bryce's earlier and asked for some... weed." my heart beat quickened, and I glanced at him.

"W-"

"Calm down, Gabi. Just listen."

"Before lunch, I'm going to Mr. Porter and from then you will see how brilliant my plan is," Marcus grimaced.

I knew exactly what his plan is.  Mr. Porter would be dumb if he believes someone like Clay is a drug addict. He's just depressed and caught up with problems like me or anyone on the tapes.

"No," they all looked towards me. "why would we? The truth deserves to be shared!" Justin stood up and glared at me.

"So if it's shared, all of our secrets, everything we did, becomes shared too, even yours, pretty girl."

"Alright, none of that." Zach got between Justin and me.

"You're not going to agree to this, are you Zach?" I ask, looking at him. Zach looked slightly down, not meeting my gaze.

"Alex?" I try again, asking the white-haired boy who has been muted and tired for days now.

Alex looked at me, before shrugging. I sighed, heavily. "This plan is dumb. Everyone will find out the truth sometime and-" a heavy force pushed me against the wall, and I winced in pain. A sound of agony escaped my mouth, and I tried to reach for my head.

"No. They. Won't." Marcus glared at me, and Zach pulled him off.

"Alright! Knock it off!" I held my head and glared at him.

"I'm not going to deal with this." I turned to walk away.

"So, are you telling me you're on his side?" Courtney pierced, and I turned back to face them.

"I'm not on anyone's side! I believe in doing the right thing, and this isn't it!"

"Excuse me?" Courtney laughed, maliciously.

"I didn't stumble, Crimson."

"What about you, then Gabi? Why don't you move on? Huh?" Did she just say that? I stand there quiet for a moment.

"Because one does not just move on when people they love are gone..." I say softly.

"Well, we loved Hannah-"

"Loved Hannah, you? Yeah right, you exposed her in front of the whole school and just caused her to get tormented more! None of you cared about her, at all!" At this point, I was yelling. The janitor glanced my way before I ran off, my eyes watering.

I could hear Zach calling my name, but I continued outside. I don't even know why I still bother every morning and go to school. I'm failing every subject, and I can't hit anything anymore, at the practices or the games! When I arrived outside, I pushed myself against a tree and just let tears of grief escape my mouth. I heard a door open from where I came out of and someone rushed to me.

"Gabi," he tries to grab my hand, but I pull it away.  He sighs. "Are you having problems with your grades? I can help you." Zach looks at me expectantly.

I shook my head, tears still coming. "This place isn't a school... it's hell. Nobody here is anybody's friend! All this bullshit, I can't do it! We all did this to her! We all did this to him!"

"It was an accident, Bella. You of all people should know that!" he furrowed his eyebrows together, and I shook my head.

"Accident? He was sober! Then the school has the guts to post drunk driving posters on the wall? They only take action when it's too late," I pushed myself off the tree. "when somebody is already gone!" Zach grabbed my arm, and I pulled it away.

"None of this stupid town cares unless it makes the front page!" tears continued to pour down my face. Zach looked down at the muddy ground and sighed.

"What's going on?" Clay walked by the tree and glared at Zach.

"What did you do, Dempsey?" he tried to seem intimidating, but Zach's height overwhelmed Clay's attempt.

"I need to go," I stammered away. Clay grabbed the sleeve of my sweatshirt gently, trying to talk to me, but Zach pushed him away.

Clay had come to us again for another 'pep talk' about Hannah, and Jeff always knew exactly what to say.

"How did it go?"

"He finally went to talk to her." he smiled.

"Atkins knows how to do." I tried to contain my laughter, but we both gave in. I tried handing him my cup to drink, but he just looked at it.

He shook his head, "No thanks."

"Aw," I taunted. "It's just a little sip, baby. Have fun." I laughed. I didn't want to get drunk, I had no clue how I did so fast.

"How much have you drank?" Jeff asked.

I shrugged, "Like two."

He raises his eyebrow, not believing what I said.

"I swear." I laughed a little and he shook his head, looking into my cup.

"Who gave you that?" I nudged over to Justin and Jeff looked back at me.

"What about you, then?" I squinted at him and tried to stay serious. I knew he never drank that much, he was always so responsible. He never ended up drunk.

Thank God he's not like Justin or Bryce.  Last time I checked Justin was grinding on Jessica and last time I saw Bryce, he already smelled really, really high.

"I had two beers and that was 2 hours ago." He says. "I'm very responsible, believe it or not." he laughed and I rolled my eyes.

"I believe you." I laughed, getting the cup from his hand, now taking what he said into my thoughts. I didn't want him to get busted for drunk driving.

"Can I come with you later?" I ask, hopeful.

"I don't want you to go alone, Jeff.'" he thought for a moment. I didn't know I was that drunk, but Jeff knew. He always knew.

"Yeah, of course you can," Jeff said and I smiled, planting a kiss on his well-rounded cheek.
