~11~ Once In Love With Amy

"Al washes a car in six minutes." Mr. Feeny began as Gia sat in her chair, tired as heck. It had been a long night, and she had been dragged to a charity ball by her parents. "Fred washes the same car in eight minutes. How long will it take Al and Fred to wash the car together?"

"Piece of cake." Cory stated as he leaned back in his seat.

"Think about it, Mr. Matthews." Feeny told him.

"I don't have to think about it, Mr. Feeny. It's simple." Cory explained and Gia scoffed, rolling her eyes.

Gia groaned, laying her head on her desk. Shawn stared at her, giving her an odd look. She stuck her tongue out at him, closing her eyes.

"It's four and a half minutes. Hold your applause please." Minkus said while Gia simply snored.

Feeny looked down at his watch, "Mr. Minkus, you're wrong." He said, before glancing over to Gia. "Somebody please wake up Miss Watts."

"Wrong?" Minkus asked as he leaned forward in his desk, "As in not right?"

Shawn leaned over to Gia, shaking her shoulders lightly. "Hey, Gi." He whispered slightly. "You gotta wake up."

She shook her head.

"I'll let you sleep on my shoulder during lunch." He whispered, shaking her again, causing her to sit up with a glare.

"I never wake you up." She muttered.

"You know the laws of averages better than I do. It was bound to catch up with you." Mr. Feeny tried to console Minkus, who seemed to be frozen in shock.

Gia watched sleepily as Minkus stood up from his seat and walked to the classroom door.

"Where are you going?" Mr. Feeny asked.

"Nurse." He and Gia said at the same time, the girl smirking slightly.

"Minkus, you're wrong." Shawn murmured under his breath as he stared at the door.

"I've been waiting to hear those words since pre-school," Cory sighed happily.

"Does anyone else have any thoughts on this problem?" Mr. Feeny asked and Topanga closed her eyes and leaned back,

"Om," She hummed, "I'm channeling the ancient Egyptian mathematician who first solved this problem."

Gia watched with wide eyes as Topanga gurgled, grabbed her pencil, continued to gurgle, and start to write down the work for the problem. That girl boggled her mind.

"Check, please." Shawn snapped his fingers, and Gia grinned, before pretending to reprimand him.

"Be nice." She said before turning back to the front of the class.

"All right, Miss. Lawrence. Let's see what you've come up with." Feeny looked down at the paper before back up in shock, "Well, oddly enough you and your metaphysical lab partner have arrived at the correct answer."

"Let me see that." Cory said as he leaned forward only for Topanga to roar as she turned to face him. Gia jumped, grabbing Shawn's arm in surprise.

"Nice demon." Cory said, patting the girl's head.

"Interesting, isn't it, Mr. Matthews." Mr. Feeny said as he folded Topanga's paper, "Mr. Minkus didn't get the correct answer but Miss. Lawrence did. You would do well to consider that in your search for your answer."

"She's cheating," Cory whined, "She copies off of dead guys."

Gia was sitting in her room, listening to her record player,  which had 40s music coming out of it. Bing Crosby's voice droned out as she sat in her bay window.

The girl flipped through the pages of her book absentmindedly. In Gia's opinion there was nothing better than a good book and some Bing Crosby.

Suddenly her phone rang, causing her to jump. "Hello?" She asked into the phone.

"Hey, Gi." Shawn's voice said casually.

"How can I help you, Mr. Hunter?" Gia asked, grinning.

"So I'm sort of... watching Morgan... and I don't know what to do."

Gia giggled. "Did you just say you were watching Morgan?"

"Please don't ask." Shawn pleaded and she sighed.

"Fine. Um... Morgan likes to play with her dolls." She suggested.

"Not gonna happen."

"Tea Party?"

"No way."

"Why don't you just play a card game then."

"What kind of card game?" Shawn asked suspiciously.

"Something she knows or can learn."

"Like..." Gia rolled her eyes at the boy's stupidity.

"How about Go Fish?"

"Actually, I think I got an idea. Thanks, Gi."

"I swear to God if you teach this kid how to play Poker—"

"You're breaking up." The boy yelled into the phone before hanging up. Gia rolled her eyes. That boy was going to be the death of her.

"Al washes a car in six minutes. Fred washes the same car in eight." Mr. Feeny announced as he walked to the front of the room, "How long will it take them to wash the car together? And the answer is still not seven, Mr. Matthews."

"I know, sir." Cory said.

"What else do you know?" Feeny questioned, folding his hands in front of him and leaning on his desk.

"I know why you gave us this word problem." Cory admitted.

"To suck the fun out of our lives." Shawn suggested and Gia grinned, laughing.

"Yeah, that, but the main reason is to get us to stop thinking like kids and start thinking like adults." Cory explained, "I know that there's not always one right answer. There may not even be an answer at all."

"Startling. And how did you arrive at that conclusion?" Mr. Feeny asked with a smile.

"I found out that sometimes we need to learn to think differently. That's how Topanga knew. Because she thinks differently. Really differently."

Gia turned to see the growing smile on Topanga's face from the back of the room and gave the girl a teasing grin.

"Well, Mr. Matthews," Mr. Feeny smiled, "I'm impressed. In all the time we've known each other, I don't think I've ever been so impressed."

"Thank, Mr. Feeny." Cory said and Mr. Feeny started to walk slowly around the room.

"In the course of your education, you have been taught to look for the right answer; but you also must know that in life, many times the right answer is, that there isn't one. This is an especially valuable lesson for you, Mr. Minkus." Mr. Feeny said as he approached Minkus, "So, I'm afraid your calculations are all for naught."

"Not necessarily," Minkus said as he continued to look at the board, "I think I may have inadvertently discovered the secret of time travel."

Gia grinned, turning to Minkus. "You are my favorite cousin ever." The girl mumbled.

"Wait what?" Shawn's head snapped to Gia. "Did you just say–" But the Watts girl didn't respond, and instead fell back asleep on her desk, in classic Gia fashion. Her parents didn't have to know.
