Roman strode silently through his domain. He spent most of his time here, when he could. It was whatever he wanted. The Imagination.
It was surprisingly pleasant for him, watching the world form around him as he sat in the middle of it all. Especially after a bad day.
Speaking of which...
"Roman, we need content," Virgil said as he took forced deep breaths.
Virgil hadn't been having a great day either, that much was clear.
"I'm working on it," Roman had responded. "It's not easy, Virgil!" He had refrained from using the nickname on the top of his tongue. He didn't want to be accused of hating Virgil again.
"Easy? You don't know how easy your job is!" the darker side retorted. "All you have to do is imagine and make sure it's good! I keep Thomas alive."
Roman had just chosen to walk away. He wasn't going to get in trouble with Patton and Logan for getting Virgil worked up, so he came here. The only place he had complete control.
He stopped walking as a lake began to take shape in front of him, the shore spreading beneath his shoes. A large stone broke from the ground and Roman sat down. He had grown tired of walking.
They beautiful scenery that he created made him feel in control.
Roman knows that he never had much control. Even when he was on stage, control was shared. As much as he hated admitting it, Deceit helped him so much when it came to theater. He never did like saying he needed help, so everyone assumed he did it alone.
He just took the credit. Where Deceit was involved, things got complicated.
Logan was okay with him at times, but usually wanted him gone.
Virgil hated him for reasons no one was entirely sure of besides the emo himself.
Patton, he just wanted to support Virgil. Make him feel welcome. So, he wasn't a big fan of Deceit either.
Roman didn't know what to think. He got a headache every time he tried to settle his opinion on it!
There it is again, he thought, rubbing his head.
The prince looked up the the sky, weary and alone. He did what could either make him feel better or worse in situations like that.
He sang.
*~*
"I don't need you to sell me on reasons to want you..."
Deceit jolted a bit at the voice, not knowing someone was in the imagination with him. He never had much power in this area, but it was calming to walk through Roman's previous creations. Some of them. The manticore-chimera comment wasn't a joke.
"I don't need you to search for the proof that I should."
Gosh, his voice is gorgeous.
Deceit blushed at his thoughts. One thing he couldn't lie to himself about, he was head over heels for Princey. And it hurt.
"You don't have to convince me.
You don't have to be scared you're not enough."
Ironic. The snake faced persona sighed. I know he won't ever love me. I'm the villain.
"Because what we've got going is good."
"I don't need more reminders of all that's been broken."
So much was broken, to Deceit. He was hated, but he did it to himself. He was reminded of it every single day.
"I don't need you to fix what I'd rather forget.
Clear the slate and start over."
If only...
"Try to quiet the voices in your head.
We can't compete with all that."
Deceit knows this song by heart. He knows so many of the musical songs. He hardly ever spoke of it, but he adored theater.
"So what if it's us?
What if it's us
And only us."
It currently was, as far as Deceit knew. He saw Roman sitting just meters away as he leaned on a tall tree.
"And what if that's all that we need it to be
And the rest of the world falls away?
What do you say?"
He didn't know what he was thinking. In fact, he wasn't sure he was thinking at all, but he stepped forward.
*~*
"I never thought there'd be someone like you who would want me."
Roman was shocked to hear a voice behind him, jumping in fright. He quickly calmed when he saw that it was Deceit beginning the duet. He had missed his small line, but he didn't mind.
"So I give you ten thousand reasons to not let me go."
The prince took advantage of the fact that he was already standing and moved closer until he was only a few steps away from Deceit.
"But if you really see me
If you like me for me and nothing else..."
Deceit had paused in his part, a pained expression passing over his face.
At least, that's what Roman saw. It disappeared soon after showing up.
"Well, that's all that I've wanted for longer than you could possibly know."
*~*
Those few lines felt like a fork slashing across Deceit's heart. ([A/N]Yeah, fork. No judgement.)
It won't be a reality.
"So it can be us
It can be us
And only us."
Deceit hardly noticed that Roman had approached just a bit more.
"And what came before won't count anymore or matter
We can try that."
Both had stepped forward, almost touching by now.
"It's not so impossible"
"Nobody else but the two of us here"
"'Cause you're saying it's possible"
Deceit watched as Roman's lips spread into a smile. Wait, why was he watching Roman's lips? I'm a gay mess.
"We can just watch the whole world disappear."
"'Til you're the only one
I still know how to see."
"It's just you and me."
"It'll be us
It'll be us
And only us
And what came before won't count anymore."
Deceit didn't know when he had closed the distance between them, but he was now holding Roman in his arms, his hands on the small of the other's back.
"We can try that
You and me
That's all that we need it to be
And the rest of the world falls away
And the rest of the world falls away."
Roman let his arms wrap around Deceit's neck loosely.
"The world falls away
The world falls away."
Deceit leaned closer.
"And it's only us."
The two pairs of lips connected.
