Chapter 6: Uh Oh

Alright here's where the action starts building up.

Luke's POV:
We were almost onto the driveway, when I stopped. Something didn't feel right.

"Josh wait." I called out. "I have a bad feeling about this. Maybe we shouldn't go in."

"Oh come on dude. It can't really be that scary." Josh sighed.

"It is scary, and it's a very bad idea to test our luck and go in to it too." I quipped.

"It's just an old house." Ava added. "No need to be scared Luke."

"In his defense it is a creepy and abandoned old house." Layne pointed out.

"Thank you! See? Layne gets it." I high-fived her.

She intertwined our fingers, holding our hands together. I took that as an opportunity to spin her around and into my chest, pulling her into a hug from behind.

"Lucas Brady, you little charmer." She giggled.

"Alright you two, come on." Ava teased.

"Look, I'll even prove there's nothing to be scared of." Josh said, walking towards the front door of the spooky, broken-down building.

I had a feeling that that night wasn't going to end well.

Something was... off.

I could just tell that we were not going to be prepared for what happened next.

And boy was I right.

"Josh, stop. Seriously. Something's not right."

But of course, he didn't listen to me.

"Oh whatever, stop with the excuses." He teased lightly.

"I'm dead serious. Let's just go watch movies or something before we actually end up dead."

"Aw come on man, there's nothing to be scared of, see?"

"Famous last words man, I'm telling you, we need to leave, now."

"I think Luke's right." Layne agreed. "I have a really bad feeling about this."

"I'm fine guys, nothing bad's gonna happen." He reassured.

The air went cold all of a sudden and I heard a howl pierce the silence of the night.

"Josh!" Ava yelled, looking like she was about to cry. "Come on! Josh run! That noise came from in there!"

He stopped dead on the porch, and I could tell he was convinced we should leave.

But he didn't get a chance to turn around and come back.

At once, the door flung open and we all screamed. I saw red, gleaming eyes in the doorway and what I swore I saw was some kind of wolf-like, humanoid creature grab him, snarling and growling.

Josh was a star athlete and one of the fastest people I knew, but even he didn't stand a chance against this... this monster.

It grabbed him and half-wrestled, half-threw Josh inside the spooky old house.

I'd known him almost my whole life and I can't remember any time before that messed up night that I saw him so scared, or even scared at all. He wasn't afraid of that much. When you add in that he was a generally brave and tough guy, and it was no wonder he didn't get scared often. But, when the beastly thing attacked, he looked absolutely terrified. As it drug him into the house, I'll never forget the look of absolute panic and horror on his face. It hurts to even remember how hurt and horrified he was, fighting something that none of us had even known existed until right then. He yelled out in pain or maybe fear, or perhaps a mix of the two, the whole time.

I wanted to help but I was frozen to my place. My mind was racing as it tried to process this demonic predator, who was just a couple yards away, preying on my lifelong best friend, on Halloween at midnight.

I'd always assumed that it was utterly ridiculous to think or believe such things as werewolves, vampires, goblins, or evil witches exist. It seemed just plain impossible and illogical. But ever since that night, I was never quite as sure.

"Luke!" He screamed out, his voice cracking ever so slightly. "Luke!! Help! Please!"

His cry for help shook me out of my thoughts.

"Josh!" I started to run in after him as fast as I could, but Ava grabbed my shoulders from behind. She slowed me down long enough for Layne to get in front of me. No doubt to try and keep me from getting far.

"Layne, move! Please! I have to help him!" I yelled, trying to get past her.

"I know you do! I know you want to save him Luke! But you can't! Not yet! We need a plan!"

"No! I have to help him!" Tears welled in my eyes. "I have to!" I practically sobbed.

Layne threw her arms around me and pulled me into a tight hug to keep me from chasing after him.

I wanted to go after him but I knew Layne was right; I couldn't just rush in there blind. I needed to make a plan, gather supplies, and prepare well. Otherwise, we'd all end up in there helpless right with him.

"I'll come and get you buddy! Just hold on!" I screamed. "I'll try to rescue you, I promise!"

I broke down in Layne's arms, and I heard "I'll try!" echo out the house's front door, just before it slammed shut, trapping my best friend somewhere inside a very large, and actually haunted house with some kind of mysterious monstrosity of a creature that we had no idea how to take down.

Uh oh is right, isn't it?
